With the 2017/18 campaign just around the corner, watch MFC TV’s review of last season ahead of the fixture announcements on Friday.

Lewis Irons sat down with MFC TV commentator Graham Barnstaple and Deputy Head of Sport at the Herald & Times Scott Mullen to take a look back over the 2016/17 season.

Motherwell’s final pre-season fixture before the Betfred Cup will be an away trip face Vanarama National side Barrow AFC.

The Steelmen will take on the Bluebirds on Tuesday 11th July (6.30pm) at the Furness Building Society Stadium (Holker Street).

The game will be the final preparation match before the Betfred Cup opener against Queen’s Park at Hampden on Saturday 15th July.

Tuesday 4th July 2017: vs Livingston (a) – 7.45pm KO
Saturday 8th July 2017: vs Gateshead (a) – 12 noon KO

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson spoke to the broadcast press this morning following the appointment of his assistant Keith Lasley.

And as the Steelmen return for pre-season training, the Fir Park boss sat down to look ahead to the new campaign which is just around the corner.

The Northern Irishman revealed the decision to appoint club legend Lasley as his number two as he makes the transition in to coaching.
Robinson said: “I sat down and spoke to Keith when he came back from his holiday and he still had a playing contract.

“Financially, being an assistant manager is nowhere near as viable as it is being a footballer – but what impressed me most was his desire and commitment to take the next step.”

He added: “My insistence was that he had to give up playing, I didn’t want someone in a dual job, I wanted someone who was very much dedicated to taking the club forwards coaching-wise and Keith bought in to that fully.”

Motherwell FC is today delighted to confirm the promotion of Jamie Semple and Kyle MacDonald from the Elite Academy.

Sixteen-year olds Semple and MacDonald have turned pro after years of tutorship at Scott Leitch’s Academy and will now form part of Stephen Craigan’s Under 20s.

Both are more than familiar with the group though, having already played on numerous occasions. Indeed, Semple made his Development League debut against Dundee Utd aged just fourteen.

MacDonald is a hard-working midfield player who has shown great determination to make the step up. He shone at a recent Under 20s match against Rangers at Ibrox and has made the progression to continue his fine rise in recent years.

After signing his first professional deal, Kyle said: “As soon as I found out I was being offered a contract I was over the moon.

“I hadn’t planned for anything else, I was fully committed to this and trying to prove myself at Motherwell and I’m just so happy now, I’ve been here since I was 8-years-old so it’s a dream come true to be honest.”

Scotland Youth International Semple is a forward who can also play on the flanks. He has been on the radar of a number of clubs on both sides of the border and abroad, but made a commitment to ‘Well and has seen it through by signing on professional terms.

And the youngster said: “It’s brilliant, especially when you’re coming in and seeing the first-team players and some of them have done a lot in the game.

“You also see boys in the under-20s being pushed up in to the first team so you can see the pathway, what’s in front of you and what you need to do to get to that next level.”

Under-20s boss Stephen Craigan admitted that the two teenagers are ready to make the next step in their careers, but the Northern Irishman firmly believes the hard work is just getting started for the duo.

He said: “First of all I’d like to congratulate Kyle and Jamie, this is an exciting step for a young footballer and I know they’ll be eagerly awaiting the fixtures rolling round soon.

“However, this is where the hard work starts and this is where the two of them need to show they’re ready to make the next, and hardest, step in their careers so far.”

He added: “We’ve seen a number of boys progress through the ranks in recent years and this is yet another example of the Motherwell Football Club model, one that can ensure these boys become the best they can be if they put in the work – I wish them all the best and look forward to the season ahead.”

Motherwell have had plenty of fine shot-stoppers down the years but few could match Sieb Dijkstra for colour and character when he kept goal for the Steelmen in the early nineties.

Confirming there was at least some validity in the old cliché that all goalkeeper’s are mad Sieb endeared himself to his new followers before he’d even kicked a ball for the club when tabloids revealed he had attempted to smuggle his pet cat into the country when moving from Holland.

Joining from Roda JC Dijkstra was called upon to make an early debut filling in for Billy Thomson in a League Cup tie against Raith Rovers on 21 August 1991.  Whilst the game resulted in a shocking 4-1 loss for then Scottish Cup holders the Dutchman impressed between the posts and did likewise in keeping his first clean sheet for the club in the Lanarkshire derby win over Airdrie three days later.

Sieb had to bide his time for his next opportunity waiting for more than a year for his next appearance in claret and amber but soon established himself ahead of Billy Thomson as first choice.

Resplendent in his trademark florescent coloured top every inch of the penalty box was his domain. It became commonplace to see him launch his 6ft 5in tall and near 15 stone frame high in the air on the edge of his area to claim crosses off the heads of oppositions players. And woe betide any player – friend or foe who was unfortunate enough to get in his way whilst in full flight!

Of course not all of these aerial assaults would work out as planned with the occasional goal lost as a consequence but much loved as he was the Motherwell fans were forgiving of a player whose passion was such he occasionally have blazing on-field rows with his own team-mates.

Sieb’s commanding presence between the posts contributed to Motherwell avoiding relegation in season 1992’93 and secure third place in season 1993’94 in Tommy McLean’s last season at the club, a campaign that would see him start every one of the club’s forty-nine league and cup fixtures.

It would in fact also turn out to be Sieb’s final year at Fir Park when QPR offered him the opportunity to test himself in the English top flight.

In later years he would again serve under Tommy McLean at Dundee Utd but he retained a special bond with Motherwell FC and the club’s supporters.

Dijkstra would travel from the Netherlands to feature for ‘Well legends sides in both the Phil O’Donnell tribute match staged at Celtic Park and  Dougie Arnott’s testimonial in 2008.

He would also be one of the first former players to be interviewed for the popular MFC Podcast and in 2013 would even make a trip to Scotland to turn out for the Fir Park Corner Motherwell supporters team.

Accompanying them will be Susie McCabe whos is known for her brilliant storytelling, acute observations and killer punchlines, which have made her one of most sought after performers in the UK, supporting the likes of Ardal O’Hanlon, Zoe Lyons and Stewart Francis.   She has been tipped as one to watch in 2017, so don’t miss this chance to catch her on her first ever Scottish tour!

Completing the billing is Des McLean who Billy Connolly has cited McLean as his favourite comedian.

Motherwell Football Club is tonight delighted to showcase the new Macron home and away kits for the 2017/18 season.

It will be Motherwell’s fourth campaign with Italian manufacturers Macron and the first with new principal sponsors McEwan Fraser Legal, the UK & Scotland’s award-winning solicitors & estate agents.

The home strip has a very traditional look and feel to it, with a return to claret shorts and the claret and amber hooped socks.

The away is something different and unique, with a black, grey and claret hooped shirt, with black shorts and hooped socks and includes an unique white tonal badge.
