We can confirm that we have entered into a Cooperation Agreement with Lowland League side Cowdenbeath. 

This new system has been introduced based on the Scottish Football Association’s research into the potential for young, homegrown talent in Scottish football. The results were detailed in the 2024 Transition Report.

In summary, the report concluded that players aged 16 to 21 were not receiving sufficient opportunities to play and develop.

The new system enables young Scottish players to join a club on loan, increasing their chances of gaining valuable first-team experience while allowing them to move freely between their parent club and the loan club throughout the season.

Following the successful loan spells of former Motherwell player Adam McDonald, and Olly Whyte, at Cowdenbeath, we have established an official partnership with the Lowland League club to foster growth for both teams and their players.

As part of this new collaboration, youngsters Nathan Lawson and Scott Williamson will now join Cowdenbeath on loan.

“We are delighted that the SFA has introduced this new system to Scottish football,” Chief Executive Brian Caldwell said.

“At Motherwell, we rely heavily on the development of young players within our academy. Over the last couple of seasons, the statistics show we lead the way on minutes played by young Scottish players in our first-team.

“This is a huge part of the business model here at Fir Park. However, the step between Under 18 football and first-team football can be testing. That’s where this system becomes really beneficial.

“Without the constraints of standard loan agreements, players can play minutes within a first-team environment, which will only aid their development, but the chance of playing for Motherwell remains.

“Cowdenbeath have been a pleasure to deal with over the last couple of seasons. Only last year, Olly Whyte went there and won a number of accolades in the process. This is the type of club we want to be working with; it’s clear our values align. We hope this is the start of a fruitful and successful partnership, and I wish Nathan and Scott the very best of luck during their time at Cowdenbeath this season.”

Fir Park will host two Scotland Under 21 matches later this year. 

The Young Scots will take on Portugal on Tuesday 9 September in their second match of Euro Under 21 qualifying.

A second match will take place on Tuesday 18 November against Bulgaria. All relevant ticket details will be communicated in due course.

It was on the 28 July 1996 that our community suffered it’s biggest loss to date. In just six seconds, livelihoods and a Lanarkshire landmark came crashing to the ground.

After more than four decades, the iconic Ravenscraig Steelworks were demolished, leading to thousands unemployed.

We honour our history with this season’s away kit that features the British Steel logo on the jersey. Predominately light blue, the kit features a small drip of claret and amber on the collar and cuffs.

We have once again created a fan survey ahead of the new season. 

We’re continually looking at ways we can improve the fan experience in all aspects.

That’s why we have created a short survey, ranging from club events to your view on club morals. We value your feedback and opinion and want to hear them.

The survey answers from everyone who takes part will be used to help inform future plans around fan engagement and also satisfy Scottish Football Authorities requirements on demographic data.

Zac Gunn, a devoted young Motherwell supporter, was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2019, a rare condition impacting the heart and lungs.

His journey resonated deeply with many, showcasing his incredible courage and inspiring those around him.

Tragically, Zac passed away earlier this month, and we are reaching out to the broader football community to unite in support of the Gunn family during this difficult time.

Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to help his parents, Gordon and Ashley, provide Zac with the farewell he truly deserves.

Though he will be greatly missed, his legacy will live on.

A JustGiving page has been set up for those who want to donate money that will go to the Gunn family to ensure Zac Gunn gets the send-off he deserves. The club will also be making a significant contribution.

Help Simon Ramsden reach his target of £3,000, as the former defender will begin his emotional fundraiser for Joe Thompson’s family.

Ramsden will be training for 37 consecutive hours later this month in a bid to raise money for Thompson’s family following his passing.

Thompson, Ramsden’s best friend and former teammate, passed away in April following a third cancer diagnosis at the age of 36. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Thompson had a turbulent upbringing but managed to attract interest from Manchester United as a youngster. Not quite making the grade, he moved to his local side, Rochdale, where he became a first-team regular. After spending six years there, he moved to Tranmere, and it was here that he was diagnosed with cancer for the first time.

Confirmed with nodular sclerosis Hodgkin lymphoma at the age of just 23, Thompson began treatment and entered remission in 2014 before returning to professional football.

After fulfilling his promise of returning to football, Thompson was diagnosed with cancer for a second time just three years after his initial diagnosis. He required life-threatening stem cell treatment, and it was expected that his football career would come to a premature end.

Showing remarkable character and bravery, not only did he come through the treatment, but he also returned to professional football once again in 2017. Playing a pivotal role for Rochdale upon his return, he called time on his footballing career on his own terms in 2019.

He was awarded the Sir Tom Finney award, an accolade given to those who contribute vastly to the EFL.

Moving into motivational speaking and working with his former club Manchester United, Thompson began to help academy players in the next steps of their careers and lives, using his immense story as motivation.

Unfortunately, Thompson was diagnosed with cancer for a third time in April 2024. Despite having stage four lymphoma which had spread to his lungs, he continued to raise money for cancer treatment and research after this diagnosis, a mark of the man.

Thompson died on 17 April 2025, at the age of 36.

Now, his former teammate and best friend, Simon Ramsden, will embark on 37 hours of back-to-back classes on Friday 27 June to try and raise funds for his family. 

“Joe’s story touched so many people,” Simon Ramsden said.

“He was an incredible man who showed immense courage and bravery throughout all his battles. I miss him so much but feel so fortunate to be able to call him my friend.

“I’m asking for any donation, big or small, that can help Joe’s family. They deserve this so much, and hopefully we can raise enough money to make a positive impact. 

“Thank you to everyone who is willing to donate towards this cause. It’s truly appreciated.”

Training sessions will take place at Fir Park Astro located behind the East Stand at Fir Park Stadium, two nights per week.
