UEFA have announced that all qualifying round matches in the competition will be played in a single leg.

The draw for the round will determine whether our game will be played at Fir Park or at the opposition’s venue.

A date for the draw will be announced in due course. Once an opponent is confirmed, we will update supporters on arrangements.

Should the Steelmen progress, the second qualifying round will be played on 17 September, with the third qualifying round a week later on 24 September.

The play-off follows on 1 October, before the commencement of the group stage on 22 October.

    Young four sign new deals

Barry Maguire, Yusuf Hussain, PJ Morrison and Harry Robinson have signed new deals with the club.

The young quartet have agreed to stay for the 2020/21 campaign, extending their stays at Fir Park.

Maguire has played 14 times for the Steelmen, having made his debut against St Johnstone in April 2018.

The 22-year-old, together with Hussain and Morrison, are products of the club’s youth academy. Robinson signed earlier in 2020, having left Oldham Athletic.

“We have secured the four young players on contracts and I feel they will boost our squad,” said manager Stephen Robinson.

“Players know if they are good enough, they will get chances here, no matter what age they are.

“All of them have good attributes to hopefully keep improving, as well as pushing the players in front of them.”

    Nathan McGinley signs for Motherwell

    Nathan McGinley signs for Motherwell

Nathan McGinley is our third signing for the 2020/21 season.

The left-sided defender, who can play at centre back and left back, has signed a two-year deal with the club.

“Nathan is a boy I’ve wanted for a long time,” said manager Stephen Robinson.

“I feel he gives us real pace and athleticism in the back line. He is also very versatile and can play at left back and centre back.

“He is very composed on the ball and has real pace. He’s someone I feel that, if he can continue to improve, he can play at a high level.

“At 23 years old, he is a good age and already has good experience.”

McGinley, 23, was last with Forest Green Rovers in England’s League Two.

The Middlesbrough-born player made 47 appearances across the 2019/20 season, having made a further 45 on loan with the club in the campaign previous.

A graduate of Boro’s youth academy, the pacy player made one appearance for the club, and also played 11 times on loan with Wycombe Wanderers in 2018.

“I can’t wait to get started,” said McGinley.

“I’ve been up the last few days and got myself settled ahead of training with the boys for the first time, and I’m ready to get going.

“It’s a chance for me to come and develop my game further, and work with a coach in Stephen Robinson who has a track record of making players better.

“Obviously it’s my first experience of playing in Scotland. But I’ve heard so many good things about Motherwell and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

    Jordan White signs for Motherwell

    Jordan White signs for Motherwell

Jordan White is our second summer recruit ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The forward, who was last with Inverness CT, adds to our striking options heading towards the new campaign.

“Jordan adds to our front line and brings a new dimension to what we have already,” said manager Stephen Robinson.

“He adds competition, gives us options and something we didn’t have last season.

“I’ve watched Jordan on numerous occasions and he is more than just a target man.

“He can run in behind and cause defenders problems throughout, as well as bringing others into play.”

White, who will wear the number 18 jersey, started out professionally with Dunfermline Athletic, making his debut aged 17 in 2009.

After early spells with Drogheda United, Clyde and Falkirk, his career took off with a move to Stirling Albion in 2012.

It was with the Binos in the Third Division where, after 36 goals in in 77 games, he earned a move to the second tier with Livingston.

His goal scoring continued, netting a further 31 in 86 before switching to Wrexham.

Illness curtailed his time with the club and, after a short spell at Barrow, he returned to Scotland to re-establish himself at Inverness, where he scored 25 goals over a two-year spell.

“I’m buzzing to get started and looking forward to the challenge ahead,” said the 28-year-old, who has signed a two-year deal.

“I’ve had to wait a while to get the opportunity to play in the Premiership and I couldn’t think of a better place to start.

“It’s a club that really excites me in the way they go about their business on and off the park, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.

“I’ve scored over 100 goals in Scottish football, and I’m determined to add many Premiership goals to that list and be a success.”

    Ricki Lamie signs for Motherwell

    Ricki Lamie signs for Motherwell

Ricki Lamie is our first new signing for the 2020/21 season.

The left-sided defender joins after two successful years in the Premiership with Livingston.

“Ricki is someone I’ve followed since watching him at Morton,” manager Stephen Robinson said.

“I believe he will add to our defence and can play in numerous positions, including centre back and left back.

“He gives us balance to the left side and has very good Premiership experience. He’s also a good age, with great enthusiasm to keep improving, which impressed me.”

Lamie is reunited with Declan Gallagher, his former defensive partner at Livingston.

The 26-year-old was previously with Morton in the Championship, having started his professional career with Airdrieonians.

He stepped up to the top flight in 2018 and made 60 appearances for Livi, scoring four times.

Lamie will wear the number four jersey in the 2020/21 campaign. His contract will run until the summer of 2022.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started and being part of the continued success of the club, on and off the pitch,” said the player.

“It will be a bit strange coming in to a new club given the present circumstances. But I’m excited at being able to meet up with the boys in training soon.”

End of 2019/20 first team squad update

Following the conclusion of the 2019/20 season, we can now update you on our first team squad going forward.

We are saying goodbye to our club captain Peter Hartley, 2019/20 ever-present Mark Gillespie and full-back Richard Tait.

Hartley leaves after three years at Fir Park, during which he made 66 appearances in central defence.

He took over the captaincy from Carl McHugh in 2018/19 and featured heavily this campaign as the club took third spot in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Goalkeeper Gillespie departs after two years in North Lanarkshire.

With 25 clean sheets and a 47% penalty save percentage in 67 appearances, his 17 shutouts in 2019/20 had him challenging to match Trevor Carson’s record 20, before the season was curtailed.

Richard Tait was a popular figure on and off the field at the club, having signed from Grimsby Town in the summer of 2016.

The 30-year-old made 12 Premiership starts last season, taking his overall tally to 142 in claret and amber across four campaigns.

Also departing from the first team squad are goalkeeper Rohan Ferguson, midfielder Christian Ilic, youth academy product Adam Livingstone and forward Christy Manzinga.

Rolando Aarons, Mikael Ndjoli and Mark O’Hara return after loan spells to their parent clubs Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth and Peterborough United respectively.

We have been discussing with Charles Dunne the possibility of a short-term deal, allowing him to get back to full fitness at the club before he is assessed over a potential longer contract.

“I’d like to thank every player who is leaving for their efforts during their time at the club,” said Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson.

“They leave us with our best wishes for the future.”

Everyone at the club would like to thank those moving on this summer, and wish them all the best.

    Tony Watt signs new deal

    Tony Watt signs new deal

Tony Watt has extended his stay at Motherwell Football Club.

The forward, who initially joined the club on a short-term deal in February, has signed a new contract for the 2020/21 season.

Watt, 26, scored two goals across 326 minutes in six appearances, before the 2019/20 campaign was ended.

“I’m really happy to be staying at Motherwell,” said the player.

“The manager and the coaching staff have been outstanding with me since I came to the club.

“The manager gave me a real belief when I joined and helped me get my confidence. I’m ready to do anything to repay that and help the club.

“It’s a place where I feel at home. I really feel I can make a mark and I can’t wait to get started again.”

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson added: “We’re delighted Tony has agreed to sign for the season and we are looking forward to working with him.

“I believe he showed the quality he has when he came in earlier in the year. The fitter and stronger he gets, the bigger an asset he will be to us.

“I feel there is a lot more to come and he has shown me he really wants this. We will give him a platform to show his talent and give him a stage where he can be successful, with people who believe in him.”

A full update on the squad for 2020/21 will be published on Sunday.

Motherwell clinch third spot in Premiership

Motherwell clinch third spot in Premiership

We have finished third in the 2019/20 Ladbrokes Premiership.

Following the decision of SPFL clubs and the league board on Monday, the campaign has been brought to a halt without completing all scheduled fixtures.

With the final table being calculated on a points per game basis, Motherwell retain third spot in the league and record the club’s highest league finish since coming second in 2014.

We have been nominated as one of Scotland’s participants for the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League qualifying round.

“It is an incredible achievement to finish third in the Premiership,” manager Stephen Robinson said.

“Regardless of how it came to an end, this squad have earned their place with their performances across the season.

“Our target every year is to stay in the division, although we always have aspirations to surpass that.

“But to come third given the parameters we work under, and the quality of the teams we have finished above, speaks volumes for the hard working, talented group of players and staff we have.”

Motherwell completed 30 league games from a scheduled 38 in the 2019/20 season, accumulating 46 points, winning 14 matches and scoring 41 goals.

Applying the formula adopted by the SPFL, we averaged 1.5333 points per game, compared to 1.5 by Aberdeen in fourth, and 2.3103 by Rangers in second.

“The season may not have ended with a last-game finale, but our sense of achievement remains,” chairman Jim McMahon said.

“We would have preferred to have played the season in full. But nevertheless, this is a great feat by Stephen, Keith, the coaching staff and the team. We are incredibly proud.

“During difficult times, we can reflect on the good moments the team brought us across the season in reaching third spot. Football is not the priority in these difficult times. But it gives us a common purpose from which we can draw some comfort.

“We can also look forward to playing European football again, whenever that may be.

“But most crucially, our club – and Scottish football as a whole – can now be focused fully on trying to get playing again at the earliest, safest opportunity.

“The support from all our fans throughout the season has been as outstanding as ever and has played a huge part in what we’ve done. I am certain we will show the same unity to help us come through the next challenges together.”
