    Craigan pleased with Killie win

Under 20s boss Stephen Craigan was pleased with his side after they returned to winning ways with a 0-1 away win at Kilmarnock.

The experienced Steelmen controlled the game with the only disappointment for ‘Well, as the headed back up the M77 to Lanarkshire, being the margin of victory.

The win jumps the Claret and Amber men up four places to ninth in the table and within four points of the top six with two games in hand.

And Craigan was quick to praise the attitude of his side, who won for the first time since December 1st.

“I was expecting us to see a lot of the ball given how experienced a team we were able to name,” he said.

“A lot of it was going to come down to the attitude of the five first-team lads, their quality on the ball and how they could bring the younger lads with them.

[pullquote]“Both the players who came from the first team, and the younger lads who played, all did themselves proud.[/pullquote]

“We probably should have been further ahead and you see in the last minute, they had a couple of corners and that’s why I am always saying we need to be as ruthless as we can be.

“Thankfully, we saw the game through to take all three points.”

Craigan was speaking after his side had a short winter break over the Christmas and New Year period.

It was a decent first half of the season for ‘Well, who sit near the middle of the table with several games in hand.

‘Well also have a Youth Cup Quarter Final against Celtic or St Johnstone to look forward to, but the Under 20s boss insists it’s still about development and producing players capable to turning Mark McGhee’s head.

He continued: “The aim for us is to get as much game time for our younger players as possible.

“I want to get as many of them as ready as they can be for first-team football. Yes, want to win games.

“I enjoy winning, I am sure the players do too but we mustn’t lose focus about what we’re here to do, and that is accelerate the development of our young talent.”

    Kilmarnock U20s 0 – 1 Motherwell U20s

A first-half header from Kieran Kennedy gave Motherwell U20s a deserved 1-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

However, the final result doesn’t tell the story of the game as the Steelmen dominated from the first minute to the last, with the only mystery being how they didn’t add to their single goal tally.

Stephen Craigan was able to call on the experience of Wes Fletcher, Louis Laing, Jack Leitch, Joe Chalmers and the aformentioned Kennedy, with the likes of Luke Watt, Chris Cadden and Dylan Mackin also having first-team experience.

Motherwell started on the front foot and had four chances to get their noses in front within the first eleven minutes.

Fletcher hit the side-net after two minutes, Allan Campbell fired high over the bar, Dylan Falconer also hit the side net before Kennedy headed a Chalmers corner over the crossbar as the Steelmen looked to exert their authority.

Four minutes later, Killie keeper Conor Brennan kept the scores level when he rushed off his line to stop Falconer who had blasted a fierce shot at goal from twelve yards.

Home midfielder Dean Hawkshaw was next to save his side, getting back on the line to hack clear Laing’s effort, who had prodded towards goal after getting on the end of Chalmers’ corner.

It took Kilmarnock 32 minutes to register their first effort at goal, but Brett Long blocked Scott McLean’s low shot with his feet.

That would prove a vital save as with their next attack, ‘Well would finally open the scoring. Cadden drew the foul on the bye-line, allowing Chalmers to whip in a free kick that was headed home by Kennedy from six yards out.

Craigan’s men continued to push for more goals and Fletcher again hit the side-net before a long-range Laing shot skimmed inches wide of target with Brennan at full stretch.

The second half started much the same way the first ended, with ‘Well on the attack. Wes Fletcher turning well on the edge of the area before curling an effort just wide of target.

Killie did have a rare shot when Aaron Splaine curled a shot at goal that forced Long to tip round for a corner.

However, it wasn’t long until normal service was resumed, with the Fir Parkers on the attack. Half time sub Dylan Mackin stung the palms of Brennan with a shot from 18 yards before the same player was unlucky to see a low shot deflect just over the cross bar after a lovely Leitch back heel.

Laing had another long range shot that forced Brennan to turn around before a Fletcher flick was well held by the Killie keeper.

Campbell dragged a low shot wide before free kicks from Chalmers and Watt went over the bar and straight at the keeper respectively.

Incredibly, after being under the cosh for the vasy majority of the match, Killie almost stole a leveller with the last kick of the ball when Dale Carrick turned a corner just wide of Long’s left hand upright.

Motherwell: Long, McMillan, Chalmers, Watt, Kennedy, Laing, Falconer (Mackin – 46mins), Campbell, Fletcher, J. Leitch, Cadden

Subs Not Used: Morrison, Moore, R. Leitch, Ferguson, Turnbull, Watters

    Grimshaw returns south

Motherwell FC can today (Tuesday) confirm Liam Grimshaw has returned to his parent club Manchester United.

Although the midfielder’s loan agreement was due to expire on Sunday night, United had a recall option for any point during the January window, which they exercised yesterday with a view to trading the player on.

Grimshaw leaves Fir Park having played sixteen times for the Steelmen across the SPFL Premiership, League Cup and William Hill Scottish Cup.

‘Well boss Mark McGhee explained: “We’ve held numerous very positive talks with both Liam and his representatives about the possibility of him becoming a Motherwell player.

“So much so, our plan was to try and finalise an agreement with Manchester United this week. However, we have been gazumped at the last minute by an English club who offered a package that we simply cannot compete with.

[pullquote]From Motherwell Football Club’s point of view, it is yet another example of how we are set-up to develop young players and this should give further encouragement to any footballer, club or parent about what we have to offer and the platform we can provide.[/pullquote]

“Whilst that is frustrating, we completely understand everyone’s position.

“I would like to firstly sincerely thank Manchester United for allowing us to have the player for the last four months.

“Liam himself has been fantastic in how he has approached the move and his conduct and performances throughout. We’re naturally disappointed to be losing him, but at the same time, proud of him that he’s earned such a good move and wish him every success.

“From Motherwell Football Club’s point of view, it is yet another example of how we are set-up to develop young players and this should give further encouragement to any footballer, club or parent about what we have to offer and the platform we can provide.

“We prepare for every eventuality so have other irons in the fire which we will now explore.”

    TV: McGhee praises professional ‘Well

‘Well boss Mark McGhee heaped praise on his players for their attitude in today’s Scottish Cup win over Cove Rangers.

The Fir Park boss named the same starting eleven that has played in the last four matches, and was rewarded with a throughly professional performance, extending Motherwell’s unbeaten run to six matches.

Louis Moult and Scott McDonald gave the Steelmen an early cushion before Marvin Johnson and Stephen Pearson added a third and fourth before the interval.

Pearson completed the scoring with a fifth during the second half, rounding off a throughout satisfying day, which was only played due to the fantastic effort of the Groundstaff and a group of volunteer supporters, who helped clear Fir Park of several inches of snow from 6am this morning.

‘Well will now take their place in Monday’s last sixteen drawn, and McGhee was delighted with the application shown by his side.

“It was a professional performance; at not point did we take Cove lightly,” the Fir Park boss told MFC TV after the match.

“We gave the opposition total respect in the way we prepared this week and the way the players have trained has been outstanding.

“Going into the match, I was confident that if we took that sort of showing into the game, then we would win and that’s what happened.

“We made a great start with two early goals, and that really settled everyone down.

“I should also credit John Sheran and his Cove side, they stuck at it, kept their shape and worked extremely hard for each other and contributed a lot to the game.

“However, they came up against a team in good form with players at the top of their game, particularly in the forward positions. It was a good Cup tie, and we can be very pleased with ourselves.”

[pullquote]“We gave the opposition total respect in the way we prepared this week and the way the players have trained has been outstanding.[/pullquote]

McGhee also praised the contribution of substitute James McFadden, who made his ‘third’ debut in Claret and Amber to an almighty roar from the home stands.

The 48-times capped Scotland legend contributed with several excellent touches and went close on a couple of occasions.

And McGhee hailed McFadden’s presence around the club, saying: “He has still to get up to speed but he will be able to make a contribution.

“He is an entertainer. You saw the way he teamed up with Scott so there will be another day where we will be able to use him in the same sort of way and he will be effective for us.

“I have said before, he is just brilliant, having him around the place, the influence he has in others like Dom Thomas for instance. It was a pity he didn’t score.”

    Motherwell 5 – 0 Cove Rangers

    [tab:Match report]

     Phil McGhee Fir Park

Motherwell cruised into the last sixteen of the William Hill Scottish Cup with a throughly professionally performance against Cove Rangers.

Any thoughts the Highland League club had of causing a cup upset evaporated with the first five minutes as goals from Louis Moult and Scott McDonald gave ‘Well a dream start.

Further first half goals from Marvin Johnston and Stephen Pearson and another from the midfielder in the second reflected the Fir Parker’s superiority, but the plucky Aberdeenshire men battled hard to deny ‘Well further goals especially in the closing stages.

Mark McGhee paid the Highland side the utmost respect by fielding an unchanged side from ‘Well’s last 4 SPFL Premiership games.

And while the Cove players probably relished the prospect of challenging a full-strength top-flight team the gulf between the sides was apparent from the kick-off as Motherwell took the lead within 90 seconds.

Moult was involved in the build up which led to Liam Grimshaw’s clever pass allowing the over lapping Josh Law to hoist the ball to the back post where Moult finished off the move nodding home his 13th goal of the season.

The ‘Well striker had another chance before his strike partner doubled the home lead. A neat one-two with Pearson at the edge of a congested box before guiding the ball inside the ‘keeper’s right hand post to make it 2-0 and effectively kill the tie before Cove had found their feet.

It took a couple of good saves from Cove ‘keeper Stuart Mckenzie to prevent further damage.

Law was again the provider after twelve minutes and his cut back set up McDonald whose toe-poke from 10 yards was turned over by McKenzie. In a well rehearsed corner Keith Lasley floated the ball to Marvin Johnson and from 18 yards his thumping left foot drive was beaten away by the diving ‘keeper.

To their credit the Aberdeenshire side recovered from their dreadful start and had a couple of efforts on the home goal. After 19 minutes Blair Yule progressed from the middle of the park before firing his shot narrowly wide of the post and a minute later a powerful shot from Stuart Walker warmed Connor Ripley’s palms.

It was only a temporary respite for the visitor’s defence and having had a couple of earlier pots at goal Johnston made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute when he slammed the ball high into the net after Stevie Hammell’s cross was only partially cleared.

As the Highlanders were thinking about their half-time break, ‘Well added a terrific fourth goal. From a Cove corner McDonald sent Grimshaw down the right on the counter and his pass infield was collected by Moult who unselfishly teed-up the on rushing Pearson who slid the ball across the ‘keeper and into the far corner to make it 4-0 at the interval.

Within minutes of the restart it should have been five when Johnston’s pace carried him clear of the visitor’s defence, but with McDonald waiting in front of goal he elected to claim a second for himself, side footing the ball into the side netting.

Having toiled with Johnston’s pace for 52 minutes, the Cove defenders were then required to blunt the the threat of Lionel Ainsworth and James McFadden, who made his third ‘debut’ in claret and Amber at the expense of Moult.

Within a couple of minutes the subs combined, McFadden threading a pass in front of Ainsworth but his angled drive was well blocked by the advancing McKenzie.

In a rare break upfield Cove striker Daryl Nicol had a chance to add to tally of 31 goals for the season but his delicate lob over Ripley sailed over an open goal.

The pattern of the game continued to be around the visitor’s box and after McFadden’s mazy run was blunted at the edge of the six yard box, Ainsworth worked himself for a shot before he unselfishly set up Pearson for a finish similar to his first to make it 5-0.

After 63 minutes Nicol thought he had added to his impressive goal tally as his low shot was sneaking inside the post until Ripley somehow stretched to palm the ball round the post.

The ‘Well fans were still looking for more goals and their favourite Faddy almost capped his comeback after 70 minutes running onto McDonald’s pass but his left foot finish curled the ball into the side netting.

McDonald was denied minutes later when his low drive was pushed for a corner by the diving McKenzie who was doing his best to keep the scoreline respectable as the Fir Parker’s lined up for numerous attempts at his goal.

The ‘Well striker was twice denied again in the final 10 minutes. Firstly McFadden drew the ‘keeper before playing in McDonald who from 10 yards seemed certain to score until Darryn Kelly threw himself across the goal to block the shot. Then McFadden, who appeared to have rediscovered his old swagger, cut in from the right and rolled the ball across the goal face only for the ‘keeper to again block McDonald.

The final chance fell to the visitors, in front of their 300 fans, when Nicol lobbed the ball over Ripley only to watch his header towards the unguarded goal hooked off the line by Hammell to deny the hard working striker and Cove a consolation goal their efforts deserved.
