Motherwell were held to a 1-1 draw with Dundee United this afternoon at K-Park in the Under 18s league. 

The first chance of the game came on seven minutes. Zack Tomany battled to bring the ball under control from a throw in, he worked half a yard on the edge of the box before registering a shot on target.

The game would begin to become cagey there after, with very for chances for either side presenting themselves.

In fact, the next chance of the game wouldn’t come until the 35th minute of the match when forward Tomany latched onto a through ball from Mikey Booth, the striker raced through on goal and his strike was saved onto the bar by the United keeper.

Four minutes later however, Dundee United were in front. Josh Bogan seemed to come out of his box to clear the ball but the referee adjudged his studs to be too high and awarded a free-kick. Dundee United’s number 10 stepped up and curled the ball into the net from the subsequent free kick.

With a lacklustre first half performance now behind them, Motherwell came out all guns blazing for the second half, drawing themselves level in the process. After sustained possession, Campbell Forest volleyed into the bottom left corner from the right edge of the box to bring the game level after 50 minutes.

Motherwell continued to push forward in search of a second and it nearly came on 65 minutes. Brannan McDermott got on the end of a pass forward on the right wing before crossing into the box, Booth cut the ball back and Devon Johnstone tried to volley home but his effort was just off target.

Nathan Lawson came off the bench and was involved in the action straight away on 73 minutes. He twisted and turned in the middle of the pitch before driving into the penalty area and unleashing a strike into the side netting.

Dundee United would see a header from a corner headed off the line in one of their very few chances in the second half but on 83 minutes, Motherwell had another effort. McDermott again getting forward from right-back, this time he crossed into the box and Lawson managed to lay the ball off for goalscorer Forest but this time, his strike went wide of the goal.

Motherwell came close to winning the game with the last attack of the match through midfielder Olly Whyte. Tomany kept the ball alive from a cross and laid it back to the midfielder, he shifted it onto his right foot and seen his low, driven effort saved by the keeper.

The game ended 1-1, with Motherwell much improved in the second period.

Full-back Robbie Garcia has joined Lowland League side Cowdenbeath on loan until January.

He will join up with Adam MacDonald, who is also on loan at the club.

Named on the bench against St Mirren on Saturday, Garcia heads out in search of first-team minutes.

Our Under 18 side returned to competitive action on Friday against Kilmarnock at K-Park. 

The match ended 2-1 to the visitors, despite a Campbell Forest equaliser on the hour mark. Andy Miller and Zander Craik scored on either side of half time.

The first big chance of the game was presented to Devon Johnston of Motherwell. A slack backpass to the Kilmarnock keeper didn’t have enough power on it to reach Armour, Johnston pressed and tackled the keeper but the ball fizzed away from danger.

There would be a large stoppage in play when Arran Bone collided with Gilmour in the air. The Kilmarnock youngster was knocked out cold and treated immediately on the pitch. We wish him a speedy recovery.

At the restart, Mikey Booth went close. A free-kick from 25 yards wasn’t dealt with by the keeper who spilled the effort wide for a corner.

Max Ross was presented with a chance from a corner kick after Forest kept the ball alive in the area, but the defender blazed high and wide.

Miller opened the scoring for Killie after some continued pressure on the ‘Well backline. The centre-back connected well from a corner kick and knocked the ball in off the crossbar and past Josh Bogan. 1-1 half time.

The Motherwell keeper was called into action shortly into the second half. On 55 minutes, he made the stop from Craik’s header back across goal and his defence subsequently cleared the danger.

Substitute Harry McLean quickly made an impact from the bench shortly after. He carried the ball into the Kilmarnock penalty area and was brought down and awarded a penalty. Despite the keeper going the right way, Forest converted to get his side onto level terms.

However, seconds later, Kilmarnock were back in front. Craik converted up the other end from a free-kick awarded straight from the restart and Kilmarnock were ahead again.

Motherwell pursued an equaliser but couldn’t find the goal and ended up losing narrowly to the young Ayrshire side.

Our under 18 side took on Rangers this afternoon at K-Park, with the game ending 5-2 to the hosts.

Mikey Booth was at the double, with Ross Nelson and Campbell Forest getting on the scoresheet for the ‘Well.

Willox had the first opening of the game after two minutes. The winger found himself on the ball 1v1 against McDermott. He went to the byline and drove his shot into the side netting.

Just a minute later, Adamson went through on goal but tried to dink the ball over Bogan, however his strike went over the bar.

Mikey Booth twas he first to force Greigh Thackray in the Rangers net into action. His first free kick of the match was saved after five minute.

On 12 minutes, we had the opener. Brannan McDermott went on a mazy run and was fouled on the edge of the box. Booth stepped up again and this time found the back of the net. 1-0.

Nine minutes later, it was two. Ross Nelson drilled the ball home into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to give the young ‘Well a two goal advantage.

Motherwell continued to put on the pressure and on 25 minutes, all eyes turned to the referee. Josh Bogan played long and Luca Ross latched onto the ball, he was pulled down by the Rangers defender, seemingly stopping a goalscoring opportunity. The referee awarded a free kick but pulled out a yellow card only.

Booth stepped up from the resulting free kick and once again found the back of the net. 3-0.

On 36 minutes, the referee was the centre point. Skipper Grant, already on a booking, fouled L.Ross again. The referee conferred with Richard Foster but maintained it was only a foul and no yellow.

On 41 minutes however, it wad 4-0. Booth again at the heart of it, drove forward, slipped the ball to L.Ross who dropped the shoulder and fired into the bottom corner.

It was a quieter start to the second half with very few openings in the stages.

The first chance was presented to Rangers forward Eadie. He tried to latch onto a through but Bogan was down first to gather.

On 65 minutes, it was 5-0. Campbell Forest continued to press a back pass to the Rangers keeper, nicked in and was able to tap into an empty net.

Two minutes later, Rangers got one back. The Gers (18) forward was played through and he finished into the far corner to make it 5-1.

77 minutes, Rangers had a second. Curtis was allowed to drive forward and cut inside. He unleashed a left footed strike that flew past Bogan to make it 5-2.

The game ended 5-2 to Motherwell, rounding off a good afternoon’s work in East Kilbride.

Midfielder Adam MacDonald has joined Lowland League side Cowdenbeath on a season-long loan. 

The 17-year-old academy product has joined up with Calum Eliot and his side, with the Blue Brazil having already started their season.

Motherwell B lost on penalties to Tranent in the SPFL Trust Trophy.

Nathan McGinley and Barry Maguire started the match as our two ‘over age’ players. Luca Ross and Ewan Wilson were also in the starting 11 as Motherwell looked to go one step further in the competition last year.

The first chance of the game came after just five minutes. Euan Greig found the ball at his feet on the edge of the area, but he blasted over the bar.

Motherwell’s first chance came after eight minutes. Luca Ross worked the angle on the left wing, before cutting inside and his cross was drifting towards the back post before Mason palmed it away.

Connelly was called into action on a number of occasions.

The first of which came on 12 minutes when he tipped Ben Miller’s effort round the post. He then got behind Jones’ free-kick after 23 mins, which was from the edge of the box.

The big moment of the first half came on 40 minutes. Tranent worked the ball on the right hand side and the cross was sent towards Ben Miller at the back post. He connected and seemed to have all but scored, however Connelly spread his body well to prevent the opening.

Tranent’s right full-back Ross had a go with a driven shot on 49 minutes, however it was comfortably saved.

On the hour mark, Brannan McDermott’s cross caused all sorts of confusion after Mo Adam stole possession, however Tranent survived.

A couple of tame efforts came from Tranent with 10 minutes to go, as the game edged closer to a penalty shootout.

However, with 90 minutes played, neither side could find the breakthrough and the tie would be decided on penalties.

Nathan McGinley stepped up first and found the bet but Barry Maguire, Mo Adam and Luca Ross all failed to convert from 12 yards and Tranent progressed, winning 3-1 on penalties

The fixtures for our upcoming 2023/24 Elite CAS Under 18 season are now available. 

Kick-off times and venues for our matches will be communicated throughout the season, with supporters welcome to attend all matches.

We begin our season against Hearts on Friday 28 July at home before travelling to Celtic on Friday 4 August.

The youngsters will take on Kilmarnock on Friday 15 December before the league shuts down for a winter break.

They will return to action on Friday 12 January against Hamilton Accies.

Our final round of fixtures will occur on 23 February before the league split happens.

We have been given an away tie against Tranent in the first round of the SPFL Trust Trophy. 

The first round will be played in the midweek of August 1/2, with the second round a fortnight later.

Should Motherwell progress to the second round, we will face St Mirren B or Albion Rovers away.

Nine academy graduates have signed professional contracts with the club.

Joining the backline are Ross Nelson, Scott Williamson, Derin Marshall and Zack Flatman

In midfield, Campbell Forrest, Mikey Booth and Devon Johnston put pen to paper on their first professional deals.

Livingston born Zack Tomany provides the firepower up top.

16-year-old midfielder Olly Whyte officially joins the squad, having signed professionally in January.

“This is a big milestone for each individual,” academy director David Clarkson said.

“The step up to professional football is a big one and I have the full belief that each and every one of them have the capabilities to do so.

“We have seen the pathway that exists at Motherwell for young players coming through and that has to be the aim for these players.

“Coming in on a full-time basis also allows us to work closer with the players in terms of training, off-field nutrition and track their progress closer than ever.

“It’s an exciting batch of players who have lots of potential.”
