The Well Society, in partnership with i4travel in Wishaw, are giving away a £500 travel voucher to one lucky society member to be spent on a trip of their choice.

All Well Society members who are either pledging monthly, or have made a contribution of at least £50 in the last 12 months, will be included in the prize draw. It will take place on Monday 1 August.

The Well Society have made a generous £5,000 donation to the Motherwell Football Club academy. 

The funds, which will go towards supporting a number of areas of the academy, have been gathered as a result of numerous pledges from the society’s members.

Academy director Steven Hammell believes it will go a long way. “It will help us everywhere, we’re just trying to improve every area we can,” he said.

“We’re improving sports science, video analysis, day-to-day equipment and facilities too. We’re just trying to create better players, but also better young people as well.”

Joint chair of the Well Society, Douglas Dickie, says that this donation is an example of the good that can come from fan support, and is urging for more of the same.

“We do support the club, we integrate with the club and are supporting it financially and just giving it any support we can,” he said.

“We now see where this money is going and it’s not going in to a black hole. As owners of the club, this money is going directly in to the club in order to secure the future.”

The Well Society held their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday night (26th June).

Joint chairman Douglas Dickie reported an increase in membership and income accrued over the past year, related to the success on the park last season when ’Well finished runners-up in both national cup competitions and were seventh in the league.

Douglas reported that the membership now stands at just over 2,600 which results in an income into the Society of around £15,000 per month. The Society raised just under £200,000 in total over the last year, which included income from a share sale, auction, events and donations.

This was a fantastic achievement by the membership and in that respect Douglas thanked them for their tremendous support. He outlined that this income is vital to the success of the club throughout including supporting the academy and the club’s Community Trust.

Douglas complimented both the fantastic success and the work that the academy and the Trust carry out and pointed out that they reach out to over 30,000 people within the community. He appealed to all fans and local businesses to help the Society grow to support the community, underpinning the club’s financial stability and maximising the ‘Double Your Money’ offer given by previous owner Les Hutchison.

This pledge, whereby Mr Hutchison matches any individual investment made out of his own pocket, ends at the end of December and has a maximum ceiling of £500,000. To take full advantage of this, the Society needs to target income of £300,000 this year.

The Society has also formed a Business Club and has had one successful meeting where over 20 businesses were in attendance and demand means they have another meeting on July 19. Douglas also took time out to put on record the Society’s thanks for Mr Hutchison’s continued support since the transfer of ownership.

He said: “We have all seen the benefits of the hard work done throughout the club as a whole including the Society, the community, the academy both on and off the park last season and it is proof of what can be achieved when we all pull together.”

The meeting closed with a round of questions from the floor and a thank you from Douglas to those attending and to the current board of the Society for their hard work and support throughout the year.

The Well Society are hosting their first business breakfast, offering networking opportunities for local companies.

Former Motherwell player Bobby Watson is the guest speaker at the event, which is taking place on Thursday, April 19 in Millennium Suite at Fir Park.

Tickets cost just £10 per person. The price includes a breakfast roll, tea/coffee and orange juice. The event starts at 7.45am and runs until 9am.

Motherwell’s January recruits have all joined the rest of their teammates in signing up for the Well Society.

Earlier in the campaign, the entire first team squad at Fir Park became members, joining thousands of fans in making monthly pledges to show their commitment to the club.

Curtis Main, Nadir Çiftçi, Tom Aldred and Stephen Hendrie have now also shown their support by signing up.

“Since our arrival, everyone at the club and in the community has really welcomed us in,” said striker Main.

“We are delighted to join the Well Society. We want to show our appreciation and play our part on and off the field.”

Well Society members Heather McDonald and Brian Closs to meet the new players and welcome them into the Well Society.

“It was a great honour to meet the new guys as they joined the Well Society,” Brian said afterwards.

“There is a real feeling of togetherness around the club at the moment under fan ownership and hopefully that can push us on to finish the season strongly.”

With now close to 2,400 members, the Well Society is continuing to grow.

Les Hutchison has extended his ‘double your money’ offer with the Well Society for another year.

The club’s former owner, who oversaw the transition to fan ownership last year, has been matching the total amount of funds raised by the Well Society in this calendar year with a reduction of his loan to the club by the same amount, to a maximum of £500,000.

After a fairly modest start to the year with several changes taking place on and off the field, the Well Society have seen a significant increase in pledges, donations and funds raised in the last few months of the year.

In order to continue this momentum, Mr Hutchison has now agreed to extend this offer through the 2018 calendar year.

Motherwell FC can today announce that each one of its first-team players and football management staff has joined the Well Society.

The Society, as owners, support the club financially throughout the year, both on and off the pitch, and have done so since they took over the majority shareholding in October of last year, making Motherwell FC the only fully fan-owned entity in the Scottish Premiership.

The Society generates funds in a number of different ways, the majority raised from monthly contributions from members, with more than 1,000 fans pledging on an on-going basis.

Now, in a show of solidarity, every single player in the Motherwell first-team squad, along with the football management staff, has agreed to become a member and have signed up to a monthly contribution.

Joint Chairman of the Well Society Douglas Dickie praised this gesture saying: “It is fantastic that the players and the management team have agreed to join the Society and invest in our club, which is crucial for our success and long-term stability.

“This only underpins the unity we have throughout the club and will hopefully act as a catalyst for more fans to get behind the Society and its aims.

Club captain Carl McHugh added: “We are building a very strong bond as a squad, something the manager has worked hard to encourage.

“This is our place of work, but the players have a genuine affinity with this football club, it gets under your skin really quickly.

“Even the new lads who have just joined say there is a special feeling about Motherwell and that’s why we have, as a squad, collectively agreed to join the ‘Well Society and contribute each month.

“We want the link between the fans of the club and the players on the park to be strong. That comes from us giving 100% each and every week, but also with things like this, where we put something back because we care about this place. We are all honoured to be members.”

Stephen Robinson expanded on that by saying: “I’m proud the players have taken this step as it shows what we’re trying to build here has solid foundations.

“We have guys who are genuinely committed to each other as teammates, but also to the club that does a lot for them too.

“As a management team, it was important that we also took this step as a show of unity with the fans and to further solidify our attempts for everyone to move forward in the same direction, which will hopefully lead to positive outcomes in the future.”
