Motherwell swiftly return to competitive action keen to bounce back from the midweek defeat to defending champions Celtic. Morgan Cross netted her third consecutive goal after finding the target against Montrose and Spartans across the previous fortnight, but couldn’t prevent the hosts from coasting to a comfortable five-goal victory at the Albert Bartlett stadium.

Summer acquisitions Sienna McGoldrick and Amy Sharkey will both return to the matchday squad after being unavailable midweek against their parent club. Bailey Collins continued her goalscoring form after netting the opener against Spartans on the opening day of the 2024/25 SWPL campaign before finding the breakthrough against Montrose the following weekend.

The versatile defender will be looking to continue to build on her goalscoring pedigree this weekend, with Paul Brownlie’s side sitting three points behind the Hibees in third.

The Edinburgh-side have started the new campaign in fine form, placing seven past Aberdeen and six past Dundee United whilst overcoming Patrick Thistle on the opening day to cruise to three successive league victories this season. Motherwell can maintain some optimism, as Hibs failed to secure three points in seven consecutive away fixtures during the post-split last season whilst the women of steel remain six-games unbeaten at K-Park, earning six back-to-back victories.

The women of steel braved the conditions at a rainswept Albert Bartlett stadium, but despite an admirable performance, Celtic’s goalscoring pedigree shone through, as the hosts coasted to a comfortable five-goal victory.

Saoirse Noonan, Lucy Ashworth-Clifford, Amy Gallacher, Murphy Agnew and Maria McAneny all netted for the hosts, with Morgan Cross converting a second-half consolation.

Head coach Paul Brownlie made one change to the starting XI from last weekend’s narrow victory over Montrose at K-Park. Celtic loanee Sienna McGoldrick missed out against her parent club, with Laura McCartney returning to the starting XI. Striker Amy Sharkey also missed out on a place in the matchday squad after signing on-loan from Celtic in the summer window.

The defending champions firmly picked up from where they left off after defeating Glasgow City on Sunday. Noonan broke the deadlock only three-minutes into the game, with the Ireland international prodding the ball home from a few yards out after a goaline scramble following a dangerous delivery across the face of goal.

The second followed soon after with Ashworth-Clifford cutting inside from the left before curling a precise effort into the top-right corner.

Ashworth-Clifford soon turned provider moments later, teeing up Gallacher, who coolly slotted a side-footed effort into the bottom-corner of the net.

Down but net yet out at half-time, Motherwell persisted as the second-half resumed, applying pressure to the Celtic backline, with Morgan Cross skilfully working her way from the halfway-line before cutting inside on her opponent and dispatching a low-drilled strike into the bottom-left corner.

Despite the scoreline, Motherwell continued to control proceedings in the second-half, but couldn’t find the vital second-goal.

Celtic took advantage and netted twice against the run of play to secure the three points under the lights.

Defending champions Celtic have firmly picked up from where they left off, coasting past Dundee United with an assured 9-goal victory at Celtic Park before defeating preceding champions Glasgow City by a solitary goal.

The women of steel held off a late Montrose resurgence to earn back-to-back victories to open their 2024/25 SWPL campaign with a closely-fought 3-2 victory over the Gable Endies at K-Park.

The women of steel remain fifth in the SWPL league table on goal difference whilst remaining level on points with league leaders Hearts after coasting past a competitive Spartans team in the Scottish sottish capital last weekend.

Summer addition Rachel Todd netted her third league goal with a composed finish from the penalty spot after Morgan Cross opened the scoring with a precise finish into the bottom-left corner. Bailey Collins found the target for the second successive weekend after rounding off a quick counter-attack by dispatching a right-footed shot beyond the reach of the Montrose goalkeeper.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made one change from the side that coasted past Spartans last weekend, with Sienna McGoldrick making her first competitive start, as Mason Blyth-Clark settled for a place on the bench.

Academy graduate Teoni Steele secured her first call-up to the senior squad after being named as a substitute.

Motherwell broke the deadlock on the 26th-minute, with Cross latching onto Jo Addie’s through ball before adding the finishing touches form close-range. Todd successfully dispatched her second consecutive penalty in two weeks, converting from 12-yards after Katie Rice was impeded in the penalty area.

Collins made it three shortly before the half-time whistle, completing a well-worked counter-attack after connecting with Louisa Boyes’ whipped delivery.

Despite a comfortable advantage at the break, the hosts lead soon looked uncertain, with the visitors netting twice early into the second-half. A historic chapter awaits for the women of steel and supporters can continue to feel closer to the action, with the ability to purchase season tickets available after last season’s introduction for the first-time in the club’s history.

Paul Brownlie’s side narrowly missed out on a top-six place, with the club finishing seventh after building an important eleven-game unbeaten run – comfortably ensuring nine victories throughout that impressive run of form.

Supporters will have the option to purchase season tickets outright either online or at the ticket office with a solitary payment.

Season tickets will not apply to cup games and there will not be an option to select a designated seat.

A Message from Paul Brownlie

As one chapter closes, another one opens. We encountered numerous highs and lows last season, but I am proud of the progression at the club in the past year and am excited for the challenges that lay ahead.

Despite a tough winless spell, the commitment and endeavour from the players to finish the season unbeaten in 11-games – scoring 31-times is testament to the character and motivation of the players and their desire to continually improve season upon season.

The squad share aspirations of hitting new heights ahead of the new season, but they rely on the supporters in the stands who played a monumental impact on the entire club last year. The supporters, whose effort and dedication played a vital part in our success on the pitch, will continue to be a fundamental component as we head into the new campaign.

The connection and bond the players have shared with supporters in the past year has allowed the club to continue to develop in the right direction, with attendances at K-Park growing and the interest in developing the women’s game thriving.

Announcing season tickets for the 2024/25 league season is continuing to write another historic chapter for women’s football at the club and an important step in our development.

Captaining this side into another successive season in the Scottish top-flight is an honour and a privilege I don’t take for granted.

The progression both on and off the pitch over the past year has been instrumental with our professional standards demonstrating the desire of the club to develop the women’s game at all levels.

I think the club and we as the women’s team realised, we still have a way to go and I think to continue to improve every season is definitely our aim. Announcing season tickets was a major milestone for the club last season and continuing to have that support from the stands will be vital as we aim to achieve a historic top-six finish this season.

The women of steel travelled to the Scottish capital keen to pick up from where they left off last season, with a revitalised squad coasting past a competitive Spartans team to start the latest top-flight campaign on a high.

Competitive debutant Rachel Todd netted a prolific brace across both halves, with Bailley Collins, Sarah Gibb and Morgan Cross also finding the target in a dominant second-half display in Edinburgh.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie named three new additions within the starting XI, as Jenna Penman, Mason Blyth-Clark and Rachel Todd lined-up from the start, with Celtic loanees Sienna Mcgoldrick and Amy Sharkey featuring from the bench.

The hosts capitalised on the visitors early frustrations, netting the opener within the opening phases of play. Nevertheless, the women of steel persisted and soon netted an unpredictable equaliser, with Spartans gifting Bailley Collins a free close-range effort after misplacing an unpressurised goal-kick.

Debutant Todd soon netted Motherwell’s second from the penalty spot after Morgan Cross was hauled down after expertly escaping her marker within the penalty area. Sarah Gibb netted her first Motherwell goal early into the second-half, dispatching Bailley Collins whipped delivery across the face of goal.

Morgan Cross picked up from where she left off last season, drilling home Collins’ low delivery in an almost identical goal. Todd rounded off an exceptional afternoon under the Edinburgh sunshine, powering home Sarah Gibb’s floated corner kick with a precise headed effort.

The women of steel now head into the campaign with confidence and momentum in the pursuit of a historic top-six finish.

Striker Amy Sharkey has joined the club on a season-long loan deal from defending SWPL champions Celtic.

The 16-year-old joined the Hoops’ academy in February 2022 and instantly made an impression, earning a place on the bench against local rivals Rangers at only 15-years-old in the maiden women’s Scottish Cup final at the national stadium, Hampden park.

The forward soon made her senior Celtic debut, before featuring twice against Hamilton and Dundee United, with Sharkey netting her first top-flight goal in a 9-0 victory over the Tangerines.

“I’m delighted to have joined Motherwell,” said Sharkey.

“I want to experience regular first-team football and the club have a proven track record of developing young players and providing the platform to gain experience and progress both as a player and a person.

“I can’t wait to get started and am looking forward to playing my part in the season ahead.”

The striker, who has been capped internationally for Scotland at both U16 and U17 level, will be the sixth new acquisition for the women of steel this season.

“This is a very positive addition,” head coach Paul Brownlie said.

“Making her Celtic debut at 15 emphasises how exciting a talent Amy is, and we knew she’d be able to positively strengthen our options in the final third. We are looking forward to supporting her progression this season.”

Creative midfielder Georgie Robb has joined the club on a permanent deal after departing Dundee United in the summer.

The 18-year-old, who made 54-top-flight appearances since 2022 will feature in claret and amber ahead of the forthcoming SWPL campaign after an extensive spell in the City of Discovery.

“I’m delighted to join the club,” said Robb.

“The club are building positively towards the future, they drive high standards, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play here.

“I’m really excited to step into such a competitive environment, with competition for places creating an environment where I can develop myself as a player but also as a person. I can’t wait to get started here.”

The midfielder, who has been capped internationally for Scotland at both U15 and U19 level, will be the fifth new acquisition for the women of steel this season.

“I am delighted to get this signing completed,” head coach Paul Brownlie said.

“Georgie is an exciting young talent and I’m fully aware of the qualities she has. Georgie is versatile in position, she has the qualities to carve out goalscoring opportunities and create space in the final third. She’ll bring great balance to the team and I’m excited to continue her development this season.”
