    Club Statement: League Reconstruction

Today both Leeann Dempster and Derek Weir attended a Scottish Premier League (SPL) General meeting where the main agenda item was League Reconstruction and the future of the professional game in Scotland.

The clubs were presented with more details and were able to debate and discuss the options as they stand.

It was agreed by all clubs that that the SPL Executive has the authority take discussions to the next level with our colleagues in the Scottish Football League (SFL) who are meeting separately on Thursday.

There was no formal vote today however as a club, we indicated our support to the SPL Executive to progress discussions with the SFL.

It is now our intention to share what we heard today with our supporters so we can have the same discussion and outline why it is our view this is the best option for the game at this time.

Today we will contact the board directors of the ‘Well Society with a view to arranging a members meeting for an evening this week, specifically on the topic of league reconstruction, so we can share with our fellow ‘Well Society members what we have been presented with to date.

    Daley gets Reggae Boyz call

Omar Daley has been called-up to the Jamaica squad for their FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mexico on February 6th.

It’s the ‘Hexagonal’ round of the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Rio and the Reggae Boyz will have to be at the best in the 105,000 capacity Estadio Azteca.

Daley has 65 caps to his name but hasn’t featured for Theodore Whitemore’s side for some time.

The 31-year old winger has appeared thirteen times in Claret and Amber this term, scoring one goal (against Inverness CT in a 5-1 win back in November).

Fellow Jamaican Chris Humphrey has not been included in the squad.

    Burns Supper – Book Now!

Burns Suppers have been part of Scottish Culture for two-hundred years as a means of commemorating our best loved bard.

And when Burns immortalised haggis in verse he created a central link that is maintained to this day.

The ritual was started by close friends of Burns a few years after his death in 1796 as a tribute to his memory.

On Friday, the 1st of February, Motherwell Football Club will be celebrating that tradition with the annual Burns Supper in the Centenary Suite.

Enjoy the finest traditional fare with a healthy dram in congenial company and listen to the convivial tones of our invited speakers all for just £25 per person.

For further information or to make a booking, contact the Hospitality team on 01698 338062 or email commercial@motherwellfc.co.uk.

TV: McCall pride at Scotland role

Motherwell boss Stuart McCall today spoke of his pride at being asked to join the Scotland coaching set-up.

Capped 40 times for his country, McCall will assist new boss Gordon Strachan alongside former ‘Well gaffer Mark McGhee.

And he is sure his position with the national side will help with his role as manager at Fir Park.

[pullquote]I’m delighted that the board not only let me do this but encouraged me to do it and I think it can only bring positives.[/pullquote]

“I am absolutely honoured to be asked to do this role, he said.

“I am excited by it and what it can do for me as a coach to help me at Motherwell.

“I used to be envious about Kenny going away when National games come around. During Scotland fixtures, most SPL sides, including ourselves, give the players a bit of time to recharge their batteries.

“I used to take training for  a couple of days and then Kenny would be back so there is no issues.

“The Estonia game is on a Wednesday night and I’ll be back in the office first thing on Thursday morning preparing for the game on Saturday.

“We don’t do any team shape until Thursday at the earliest anyway so in that time I’m away, Kenny will have the boys in Monday and Tuesday, which he normally does anyway so it won’t have any effect on my role at Motherwell.

“I’m delighted that the board not only let me do this but encouraged me to do it and I think it can only bring positives.”

    McCall named Scotland assistant

Motherwell Football Club can confirm Stuart McCall has been appointed as Scotland Assistant National Coach.

Stuart will join former ‘Well boss Mark McGhee as a key member of Gordon Strachan’s backroom staff. The former Scotland international midfielder earned 40 senior caps during his illustrious career, most memorably scoring the opening goal in a 2-1 win against Sweden in Genoa during Italia 90.

Stuart played with distinction for Bradford City, Everton, Rangers and Sheffield United. He returned to Bradford as manager and has since enjoyed terrific success at Motherwell, taking the Fir Park club to third position in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League last season, with the club making an historic first appearance in the UEFA Champions League.

Stuart McCall: “I am thrilled to have been asked by Gordon Strachan to join his backroom team. Playing for my country was the highlight of my career and I have been fortunate enough to enjoy World Cup and European Championship finals as a player.

“They hold special memories for me and the Scotland supporters deserve a return to those days. I am proud to be asked to assist with the national team and look forward to working with an excellent squad of players and two outstanding coaches in Gordon and Mark.”

Gordon Strachan: “In many ways Stuart typified the classic Scotland international player: he was passionate and combative but he was also hugely influential and inspirational. He has done a tremendous job at Motherwell and his knowledge of the game, and especially his knowledge of the Scottish scene, will be invaluable.

“I am excited about working with Mark and Stuart and I am sure the players will benefit from their coaching experience.”

Leeann Dempster, Motherwell FC Chief Executive: “On behalf of the club, we are delighted that Stuart’s success with Motherwell has been recognised by his invitation to join the Scotland National Team coaching staff. We are sure his experiences of international football will complement his excellent contribution to Motherwell’s ongoing ambitions.”
