    Billy Thomson (1958-2023)

    Billy Thomson (1958-2023)

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former goalkeeper Billy Thomson.

Thomson made 59 appearances for Motherwell from 1991-1994.

Prior to joining Motherwell, Thomson was part of the fondly remembered Dundee United side who defeated Terry Venables’ Barcelona side home and away in the quarter finals of the 1986/87 UEFA Cup before they were defeated in the final by Gothenburg.

Popular goalkeeper Ally Maxwell would be leaving Motherwell in 1991, with the club searching for a replacement between the sticks.

Thomson signed from Dundee United for a fee of £50,000 as he battled it out with Sieb Dijkstra for the number one jersey at the club.

Capped seven times for his country, he would move onto pastures new with Rangers in 1994 becoming the back up keeper behind the late, great Andy Goram.

Finishing his playing days at Dundee, he would move into coaching becoming the goalkeeping coach at Rangers and Kilmarnock.

He joined Stranraer in the summer of 2021 as their goalkeeping coach, where he has been working with young Motherwell stopper Matty Connelly who is at loan with the League Two side.

The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Motherwell FC are with Billy’s family and close friends at this very sad time.

    Glasgow Women next in SWPL

    Glasgow Women next in SWPL

It’s a quick turnaround for Motherwell as they take on Glasgow Women in SWPL on Tuesday 7 February at the John Cumming Stadium.

    Kick off is 8pm.

    How to follow the game

Tickets for the game can be paid on the gate.

Adult tickets cost £6, with Under 16s tickets costing £3.

    Under 12s go for free.

    Story of the match

Motherwell have faced a tough run of games, coming up against three of the top four in their last five matches.

Draws in their last two games against Hearts and Spartans, has Motherwell sitting eighth in the table on 18 points, two points off the top six.

Glasgow Women remain bottom of the league after 17 games.

A 7-0 defeat to Hibs in their most recent game sees them yet to pick up a point.

This is the second meeting between the two sides, with the last one ending in a 4-0 win for Motherwell back in September. Carla Boyce got a double that day, with Lori Gardner and Amy Anderson also grabbing a goal each.

    Motherwell 1-1 Hearts

    Motherwell 1-1 Hearts

It was another point gained in SWPL as Motherwell remained eighth in table after a 1-1 draw with Hearts.

Lauren Doran-Barr got Motherwell in front before Monica Forsyth pulled the Jambos level in the second half.

The away side had the first big chance of the game. Jenna Penman charged down the line before flashing a ball across goal, but there was nobody in Maroon who could knock it in the back of the net.

After 16 minutes, Motherwell were ahead. Lauren Doran-Barr, from left-back, applied continuous pressure on the Hearts defender and goalkeeper Charlotte Parker-Smith, dispossessed the keeper before finishing from a tight angle with her left foot. 1-0.

It was almost 2-0 on the stroke of half time. A kick out from the Hearts keeper fell to Kaela McDonald-Nguah, whose audacious chipped effort over the keeper came crashing off the underside of the bar.

After three changes at the break, Hearts found the equaliser.

The initial phase of play was only half cleared by the women of steel and Forsyth finished into the bottom left corner past Emily Mutch.

Louisa Boyes and Kayla Jardine made their Motherwell debuts from the bench to provide a much needed boost of energy going into the latter stages of the game.

Leanne Crichton inch perfect delivery from a corner was perfect for Chelsie Watson to head towards goal, but it was blocked on the line and with the second phase, Lori Gardner acrobatically backheeled the ball in the six yard box off the post with seconds left to play.

Both sides will feel they could’ve had more out of the game but it’s another point gained for Paul Brownlie’s side as they look to climb the SWPL table.

    Aberdeen 3 – 1 Motherwell

    Aberdeen 3 – 1 Motherwell

Motherwell suffered another disappointing defeat at Pittodrie.

A Kevin van Veen penalty proved too little too late as the Steelmen lost 3-1 to Aberdeen

Steven Hammell made five changes from the side that lost 0-2 to St Johnstone midweek.

In came Max Johnston, Dean Cornelius, Blair Spittal, Jon Obika and James Furlong, replacing Shane Blaney, Olly Crankshaw, Kevin van Veen, Riku Danzaki and Callum Slattery.

Aberdeen had a good chance to take the lead after eight minutes when Duk turned O’Donnell in the box and forced a good save from the feet of Liam Kelly.

The Dons had two further chances to take the lead – MacDonald headed just wide from a corner and Ramadani forced another save from Kelly.

The home side took the lead two minutes before the break. Jonny Hayes hung up a cross to the back post and an unmarked Duk was on hand to head it into the net.

Motherwell came out in the second half and still couldn’t find a way through the Aberdeen defence and were two goals behind just after the hour mark.

Ramadani robbed Callum Slattery and played in Miovski who cooly chipped the ball over the onrushing Liam Kelly to give the Dons a comfortable lead.

That lead was extended minutes later when Miovski got his brace, tapping in Clarkson’s through ball.

Kevin van Veen got a consolation goal from the penalty spot after Matty Kennedy handled Danzaki’s shot in the box but it proved to be too little, too late for Motherwell who must pick themselves up for a big cup game next weekend against Raith Rovers.

“We didn’t create enough. When we get those big moments in the game, we need to be better.”

    Kayla Jardine joins Motherwell

    Kayla Jardine joins Motherwell

Kayla Jardine has joined on loan from Rangers until the end of the season.

A centre midfielder by trade, Jardine has mainly featured for Rangers under 19s and is now looking for valuable minutes at first team level.

The 17-year-old is capped at Scotland under 15 to under 19 level, playing for the 19s a recently as March. She scored for her country in a 9-0 thrashing of Macedonia.

“I’m very happy we have got this over the line,” head coach Paul Brownlie said.

“Kayla has real potential and I feel like it’s a good fit for both club and player coming here at this stage in her career.

“We aim to give her the game time she needs and look forward to seeing her development.”

    Calum Butcher joins Motherwell

    Calum Butcher joins Motherwell

Calum Butcher has signed for Motherwell on a deal until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The former Dundee United and Burton Albion man has returned to Scotland after an eight month stint at The Brewers.

Making 17 appearances in all competitions this season, Butcher becomes Motherwell’s ninth signing of the winter transfer window.

He has ample experience of the Scottish game after making 135 appearances for Dundee United over the course of two-and-a-half seasons.

“Similar to Dan, Calum is a player we have liked for a while and been monitoring closely,” manager Steven Hammell said.

“It adds some depth to the middle of the park but more importantly, he’s a different type of midfielder to what we have at the minute.

“He’s tough, determined to make a difference and has plenty knowledge on the league and the team.

“Unfortunately, today’s match against Aberdeen has come too soon due to him travelling up from England, but he will be able to get a good week’s training and see where we are next week.

Butcher will wear the number 66 kit this season.

    Dan Casey joins Motherwell

    Dan Casey joins Motherwell

Dan Casey is Motherwell’s latest signing.

The 25-year-old has represented Ireland at youth level and has over 80 appearances in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

Most recently at Sacramento Republic in America, the Irishman made 64 appearances in the States scoring four times.

In their U.S open cup campaign last season, Casey and second division Sacramento went on a remarkable run to the final beating MLS sides, San Jose Earthquakes, Los Angeles and Sporting Kansas before Orlando City beat them in the final.

Prior to his move to America, Casey was a main feature in both Bohemians and Cork City’s respective lineups after coming through the ranks at Sunderland.

“Dan has been someone we have been tracking for a while,” manager Steven Hammell said.

“He had a great season in America where MLS clubs were interested in securing his signature. We feel like we needed some cover in this area of the pitch with Shane picking up a knock in our most recent game.

“As I’ve said before, before I sign any player, they need to want to be here and that’s the case with Dan.”

    Steven Hammell previews Aberdeen

Steven Hammell said that his side’s performance on Wednesday night against St Johnstone was unacceptable and the worst of the season.

He mentions that he has discussed with his players about the situation that they currently find themselves in and that his players need to be ready to fight tooth and nail to rectify that.

2023 Well Society Day at Fir Park

A fundraising ‘Well Society Day’ will be held at Fir Park as Motherwell FC take on fellow fan-owned club Heart of Midlothian FC on Sunday 19 February 2023.

The day has been planned as a celebration of “fan-power” to remind supporters of the difference they make to their respective clubs.

“We want to show our fans the massive part they play in Motherwell FC,” said Douglas Dickie, Co-Chair of the Society, “and what better way than to have a whole day dedicated to them?”

The Society will have a visible presence prior to and during the match, which kicks off at noon, to answer member’s questions and hand out goodies. They will also highlight recent achievements, such as the U17s Foyle Cup win, and demonstrate how the Society has brought people together through football.

As well as giving fans the chance to win a hospitality package for 10, a number of children from the Junior Steel club and the Foundation of Hearts will take to the field as mascots.

The Society will also be hoping for a fundraising boost via a bucket collection on the day, and to add to their 3500-membership base.

Douglas added: “We’re a club who punch above our weight on so many levels, and this is made possible through the generosity of our members. They are a crucial cog in our long-term vision of a fully integrated club. Anything we can do to make them feel valued is worth it.”

And whilst competition will be fierce on the park, off it there will be a chance for colleagues from the Well Society and the Foundation of Hearts – the majority shareholders in each club – to catch up.

“Fan ownership is a journey and we’ve helped each other out along the way,” said Douglas, “we’ll look forward to continuing this relationship.”

For more information, and to enter the hospitality draw, contact The Well Society on 01698 338009 or email: well.society@motherwellfc.co.uk.
