    Last Time Out: Aberdeen (A)

Motherwell defied a late Aberdeen comeback in emphatic style, netting a decisive goal with the final kick of the game to continue their nine game unbeaten run whilst surpassing the Dons in the SWPL league table.

Motherwell comfortably cruised to a two-goal advantage in the first-half, with Kayla Jardine’s whipped delivery diverted goal-bound by the foot of an Aberdeen defender before striker Laura berry continued her remarkable goalscoring form with an exceptional solo-run and finish shortly before half-time.

The hosts were soon reduced to 10-players moments later leaving the women of steel firmly in the ascendency heading into the second-half. Despite controlling the first-half, the visitors lost their momentum, with Aberdeen responding with two quick-fire goals against the run of play.

As both sides looked certain to share a closely-fought point, defender Chelsie Watson powered home a header with the last kick of the game to secure the three points and ninth unbeaten game.

Head coach Paul Brownlie made two changes from the side that drew with Montrose at K-Park last weekend, with Bailley Collins and Rebecca Cameron settling for a place on the bench whilst Murron Cunningham and Emily Mutch both returning to the starting XI.

Knowing a victory would propel the women of steel to the top of the split, Motherwell started firmly on the front foot and soon netted the opener within the first two-minutes. Kayla Jardine’s whipped delivery from the left flank coasted across the face of goal and a mistimed Aberdeen interception forced the ball into their own net.

Murron Cunningham was next to test the Aberdeen goal, latching onto Amy Anderson’s precise through ball that sliced through the Aberdeen backline, but the experienced defender lost her footing on the artificial turf, reducing the momentum in her strike.

Morgan Cross carved the next opportunity, racing through a series of Aberdeen jerseys before curling a hopeful right-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area, but the strikers attempt was equally matched by an exceptional reaction save.

Motherwell continued to threaten the Aberdeen half, with the second following shortly before the half-time break. Striker Laura Berry regained possession with a clever interception on the halfway line before running directly through the centre of the Aberdeen half. The youngster skilfully switched the ball onto her left-foot before dispatching a calm and composed finish into the bottom-right corner.

Motherwell looked firm favourites to coast to their seventh victory throughout their impeccable unbeaten run when Aberdeen were reduced to 10-players following a verbal discussion with the match officials.

However, the women of steel suddenly lost their rhythm and momentum in the game, with Aberdeen netting twice in a prolific spell.

However, the women of steel’s never say die attitude prevailed. In the final minute of the game, Katie Rice’s whipped corner kick sailed invitingly to defender Chelsie Watson, who steadied herself before guiding a precise headed effort into the top-left corner to seal a dramatic victory on the road in the Granite City.

Jens Berthel Askou picks up Glen’s Vodka Manager of the Month award

Jens Berthel Askou has won the Glen’s Vodka Manager of the Month award for February.

The Motherwell manager receives his second accolade of the season, having won the award in December. He becomes the first manager to win the award twice in the same season since Graham Alexander in 2021.

Motherwell enjoyed a fruitful month during February. Playing five matches, the team scored ten goals and picked up ten points from a possible 12.

Wins over Dundee United, Aberdeen and St Mirren were backed up by an eventful 1-1 draw with title-chasing Rangers, despite being down to ten men for the latter stages of the match.

“The pride of the first team staff as well as the rest of the club fills me with joy as I share this award with all my colleagues at the club,” Jens Berthel Askou stated.

“While we are receiving praise and recognition on our journey, we strive to continue to develop and aim ambitiously for a strong finish to the season.”

    Opposition Report – Aberdeen (A)

    Opposition Report – Aberdeen (A)

    Head Coach – Scott Booth

Sat precariously towards the foot of the Scottish Power Women’s Premier League table, Aberdeen are fiercely battling to preserve their top-flight status.

The Dons kickstarted 2026 in style, defeating Motherwell by two-goals to one at Balmoral Stadium. A frustrating 2-2 stalemate against Hamilton Accies followed, denying Scott Booth’s side the opportunity to evade the relegation playoff position.

Successive defeats to both halves of the Edinburgh divide have compounded their desire to start the post-split campaign on a high, after a six-nil defeat to Hearts preceded a three-nil defeat to defending champions, Hibernian.

Midfielder Darcie Miller added to her goalscoring tally for the campaign in their 2-2 stalemate in Lanarkshire. The 19-year-old twice netted the equaliser for the Dons, with the latter finding the target in the 80th minute.

    Team line-up

English shot stopper and Chelsea loanee, Katie Cox is the preferred option in the Aberdeen goal, with the 19-year-old featuring throughout the season ahead of Anna Prawer. The goalkeeper spent the international break representing the young Lionesses squad, after being selected for the England Under 23-side ahead of a double-header of friendlies, with both France and the Netherlands.

Midfielder, Abi Tobin was the Dons only other international player representing their respective nation over the international break. Tobin featured alongside Motherwell’s Sophie Townsley, and Mia McArthur, as the Scotland Under-19 squad faced a double-header of friendlies against Belgium.

Former Motherwell midfielder, Brodie Greenwood has also become a mainstay regular in the Dons midfield, after departing Hearts on a short-term deal.

Strike Darcie Miller may return to the starting line-up after netting twice against Hamilton Accies. Captain and former interim Head Coach, Hannah Stewart is the likely number nine.

    League position

Despite currently occupying the relegation playoff position, Aberdeen could overtake Motherwell if they were to secure victory in the Granite City. Aberdeen sit level on points with the women of steel, but trail Iain Robinson’s side on goal-difference.

Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Dons found out their route to potential survival, with the announcement of the post-split fixtures. After facing the women of steel on the opening weekend, Scott Booth’s side will face successive games on the road against both Hamilton and Montrose.

Aberdeen will then face the reverse fixture against the Gable Endies before facing Hamilton at home. The Dons will finish how they started by concluding their 2025/26 Scottish Power Women’s Premier League campaign against Motherwell in East Kilbride.

    Next up: Aberdeen (A)

Matchday 19 of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign, and the first of the post-split awaits the women of steel this weekend, as they travel North to face Aberdeen at Balmoral Stadium.

Redemption will be on the mind of the visitors, who will return to competitive action this weekend following a fortnight-long international break.

Motherwell will seek to right the wrongs from their previous meeting with the Dons, with the hosts striking in the latter stages to complete a narrow 2-1 victory.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

Iain Robinson’s side will face a daunting fight to preserve their top-flight status, with the women of steel ahead of Aberdeen in the relegation playoff position on goal difference. Motherwell sit four-points adrift of Montrose, who narrowly missed out on the top-six, after closest-rivals Partick Thistle netted a decisive 94th-minute winner.

The women of steel must reverse their recent misfortunes, with the Lanarkshire side without a victory in their last seven. Victory this weekend could open up a three-point advantage over Aberdeen, and a 12-point lead over Hamilton, who sit at the foot of the SPWPL table.

Four players were involved in international action, with Jenna Penman representing the Scotland under-23 squad alongside Sophie Townsley and Mia McArthur, who both featured for the Scotland under-19s. Recent addition, Keri Halliday also added to her caps for the Northern Ireland senior team.

    Aberdeen

The Dons remain the women of steel’s closest-rivals in this closely-fought Scottish Power Women’s Premier League campaign. Aberdeen’s last league victory came against Motherwell in January, with the hosts netting a decisive late winner to earn a narrow 2-1 victory.

Scott Booth’s side have since picked up one-point after being held to a 2-2 draw against Hamilton Accies before successive defeats to both halves of the Edinburgh divide. A six-nil defeat to hearts preceded a three-nil defeat to Hibernian.

Aston Oxborough returns to Fir Park

Aston Oxborough returns to Fir Park

Aston Oxborough has returned to the club following a training injury to Matty Connelly.

Connelly suffered the injury during a training session this week.

As a result, we have exercised the option to emergency recall Oxborough from his loan spell at Dunfermline.

We anticipate this recall to only be temporary, and should Connelly’s recovery go according to plan, Oxborough will be able to rejoin Dunfermline on loan at some stage.

Oxborough has kept three clean sheets in his four appearances for the Pars, which included a 3-0 win over Premiership side Aberdeen, which saw Neil Lennon’s side reach Hampden and the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.

Speedy recovery, Matty, and welcome back, Aston.

Not quite enough // Dundee 2-1 Motherwell

It was nine games unbeaten for Motherwell as they headed back to Dens Park to play their rearranged match against Dundee.

Near 1400 Motherwell fans made the trip in the sunshine to see if the Steelmen could extend their run to ten games unbeaten.

But facing off against a Dundee side on the up under Stephen Pressley, it was never going to be an easy afternoon. Tawanda Maswanhise and Lukas Fadinger went close to opening the scoring, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring in the first-half.

Now with something to hang onto, Dundee defended their penalty box robustly, and it would take some magic from Callum Slattery to level the game as we entered the latter stages.

But being level didn’t last long, with Dundee scoring minutes later to retake the advantage and eventually inflict Motherwell’s fourth league defeat of the season.

The travelling crowd were full of life at full time, giving the players and staff plenty of encouragement despite the defeat. And with a trip to Celtic up next, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

    Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell suffered their fourth defeat in the Premiership this season against Dundee last weekend, ending a nine-game unbeaten run.

The match against Dundee was a game in hand, meaning there was no change to the Premiership standings going into this weekend. Tawanda Maswanhise remains the league’s top scorer with 16 goals in 26 games.

Calum Ward also leads the way in Premiership clean sheets, with the Motherwell number one on 16 for the season. The Steelmen will be looking to replicate the performance levels of the previous meeting between the two sides at Fir Park. Goals from Ibrahim Said and Elliot Watt earned Motherwell their first win over Celtic in 11 years.

    Opposition Report

Celtic moved past their rivals Rangers in the Scottish Cup last time out, winning on penalties at Ibrox to advance to the semi-finals.

It’s now four games unbeaten for Martin O’Neill’s side as they look to close the gap to Hearts at the top of the table. Benjamin Nygren is second in the top scoring charts in the Premiership with 15 goals so far, but has 19 in all competitions.

Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney both missed Celtic’s last match, with the latter expected to return for Saturday. Auston Trusty will be suspended for the game, with Engels, Carter-Vickers, Jota, Johnston and Osmand all out also.

    Dundee 2-1 Motherwell

    Dundee 2-1 Motherwell
Motherwell’s nine-game unbeaten league run came to a disappointing conclusion in the City of Discovery, as Dundee struck twice against the run of play to secure a narrow 2-1 victory at Dens Park.

Despite dominance in possession and a plethora of goalscoring opportunities in the opening 45-minutes, Motherwell failed to capitalise, with Tony Yogane netting his first goal of the season.

A magnificent Callum Slattery free-kick rewarded the visitors dominant start to the second-half, levelling the scoreline, with 12-minutes left to play.

However, the hosts stung the Steelmen in the dying stages of the game, capitalising on Motherwell’s attacking tactical alterations – finding space in the final third before substitute Finlay Robertson netted from close range.

Motherwell were unchanged from their 2-0 victory over Dundee United last weekend, with Jens Berthel Askou opting for the same starting XI and nine substitutes.

The visitors had the most enticing opportunity of the opening half to threaten the Dundee goal, with Austrian Lukas Fadinger bursting forward before teeing up talisman Tawanda Maswanhise, but the Zimbabwean’s low strike rattled the inside of stopper Jon McCracken’s boot.

Moments later, Fadinger had the opportunity to break the deadlock, rattling a powerful effort from 20 yards, but McCracken again reacted sharply to deny the midfielder.

Fadinger again forced the Scotland international into action on the half-hour mark, with the 25-year-old drilling Emmanuel Longelo’s cutback towards goal, but Dundee again survived.

Their defensive composure and Motherwell’s attacking complacency soon reflected on the scoreline, with the hosts hitting Motherwell against the run of play.

A looping delivery across the face of the goal fell kindly into the path of Yogane, who forced the ball beyond the reach of Calum Ward in the Motherwell goal.

Evidently spooked by Dundee’s sudden advantage, Motherwell almost gifted a second moments later, with Yogane nearly converting straight from the restart – but the forward could only head Welshman Cameron Congreve’s delivery narrowly wide of the target.

Motherwell rallied in the opening stages of the second-half, with attacking additions Eythor Bjorgolfsson and Regan Charles-Cook linking up well.

A floated delivery from Elijah Just was directed towards the back post from Bjorgolfsson, but Charles-Cook’s header failed to trouble McCracken.

Dundee caught Motherwell on the counter-attack yet again, and Congreve looked on in disbelief after his strike failed to find the back of the net, with the midfielder rifling an exceptional strike from 30 yards off the Motherwell crossbar.

Slattery almost brought Motherwell level with a free-kick at the edge of the box, but McCracken again produced an excellent save to deny the midfielder.

With 12 minutes left to play, Slattery would be gifted a second opportunity to convert a free-kick after Just was impeded at the edge of the penalty area.

Slattery stepped up and curled a magnificent right-footed finish high into the top-left corner, leaving McCracken with no chance.

Motherwell looked firmly in the ascendancy from that moment, pinning the Dundee backline deep into their own half, but the Steelmen couldn’t capitalise, and Dundee soon put the game beyond doubt.

A hopeful long ball caught Motherwell scrambling to recover their defensive shape, but Finlay Robertson smashed home from a yard out after a whipped delivery across the face of goal.

Motherwell remain in the hunt for the top three, with this afternoon’s result moving Dundee up to eighth.

Motherwell Team: Ward, O’Donnell, McGinn, Welsh, Longelo, Watt, Fadinger, Slattery, Said, Just, Maswanhise.

Motherwell Subs: Connelly, Sparrow, Gordon, McGhee, Priestman, Ross, Charles-Cook, Nicholson, Bjørgolfsson.
