Motherwell 2-0 Hamilton
Monday 14 September 2026
The women of steel’s derby day dominance continued to shine, as they dismantled local rivals Hamilton to comfortably secure their place in the forthcoming round of the Sky Sports Cup.
Motherwell’s dominance on the ball, and intense pressure on the Hamilton goal eventually came to fruition, with defender Ellie MacDonald brilliantly picking out the top-left corner from her whipped corner kick. Less than a minute later, Mia McArthur put the game beyond any doubt, skilfully chipping the Accies stopper to earn a comfortable two-nil victory in East Kilbride.
Head Coach, Iain Robinson made multiple changes from the side that were defeated by Rangers in a spirited performance last weekend. Young 17-year-old goalkeeper and summer acquisition, Kayla Scott made her Motherwell debut, with the experienced backline of Shannon Leishman, Chelsie Watson, Ellie MacDonald and Leah Sidey taking shape ahead.
Mia McArthur partnered fellow Rangers loanee, Saoirse Coyle-Morrow in midfield, with Mary Stanić-Floody positioned slightly higher. Justine Strain and Kodie Hay occupied either flank, with Morgan Anderson leading the line.
The hosts imposed their top-flight experience from the outset, dominating the ball, and pinning the Hamilton backline deep into their own half.
Stanic-Floody produced the first notable opportunity of the contest, curling an audacious effort from distance that narrowly evaded the far post.
Hay soon stung the palms of goalkeeper Chloe Nicholson, as Motherwell continued the press for the opener.
Motherwell were soon forced into an early change, as Shannon Leishman was left lying on the surface following a head knock.
The referee had blown for a Motherwell free-kick, whilst Hamilton’s Chloe Muir continued to play on, rifling a powerful strike off of Leishman from close-range, leaving the former Hibs captain to require treatment before being replaced by Tegan Browning.
Hamilton were able to find success on the counter-attack, with Scott quickly settling into her Motherwell debut, parrying Ava Smith’s strike over the crossbar.
As the second-half resumed, Motherwell’s frustrations continued to mount, as the breakthrough failed to materialise.
Robinson turned to his bench, looking to spark life into his side. Mason Clark, Sophie Rutherford, Lucy Sinclair, Eva Thomson, and top-goalscorer Carla Boyce all featuring.
Motherwell’s tactical alterations proved successful less than 10-minutes from the full-time whistle. MacDonald’s in-swinging delivery caught Nicholson by surprise, and the Hamilton stopper could only watch, as the ball sailed over her head before nestling comfortably into the bottom-corner.
Almost immediately from the restart, Motherwell capitalised again. MacDonald’s delivery again causing Hamilton problems, and the rebound fell comfortably to the feet of McArthur, who calmly placed her strike past Nicholson to confirm Motherwell’s place in the next round of the Sky Sports Cup.

Louisa Boyes returns to Motherwell
Sunday 13 September 2026
Former Women’s Player of the Year, Louisa Boyes has returned to the club after completing a permanent move following her recent departure from Glasgow City.
The 25-year-old central midfielder was a vital component in the Motherwell midfield under former Head Coach, Paul Brownlie. The Scotland Under-23 International scored 15-times in the Scottish Power Women’s Premier League, whilst simultaneously guiding Motherwell to the Scottish Cup Semi-Final on two separate occasions.
““It feels good to be back,” Boyes said.
“I had so many incredible memories from my first spell here, so when the opportunity to return to the club came my way, I knew that Fir Park felt like the right place to be.
“I recognise and understand the culture of what this club is about, the standards that are expected, and the environment they’ve tried to develop.”
After impressing in claret and amber, Boyes signed a professional contract with Glasgow City in the summer of 2025 after securing back-to-back Women’s Player of the Year awards in North Lanarkshire.
Boyes soon added silverware to her impressive CV, being part of the 2025/26 Sky Sports Cup winning squad.
“We are delighted to welcome Louisa back to the club,” head Coach, Iain Robinson added.
“She is an incredibly talented and technical footballer, who produced really strong numbers in her last spell here.
“We can’t wait to see her back in claret and amber.”
Boyes will wear the number. 11.

Next Up: Hamilton (H)
Sunday 13 September 2026
Sky Sports Cup action is on the horizon for Motherwell this weekend, as they welcome local rivals Hamilton in the Lanarkshire derby
Despite defeat to league leaders Rangers last weekend, Iain Robinson’s side held their own against the full-time side, and will be seeking to replicate their exceptional performance this afternoon.
It’ll be the first Lanarkshire derby of the 2026/27 campaign.
The Tale of the Tape
Motherwell
Motherwell head into this afternoon’s contest with firm belief that they can maintain their recent derby day dominance.
The women of steel have secured victory in their last seven meeting’s against Hamilton, with both four-nil and a three-nil post-split victories relegating Accies last season.
Striker Carla Boyce has shown her goalscoring ability in this fixture, netting four-times across the last three meeting’s with Hamilton.
Hamilton
Three consecutive victories in the Sky Sports Cup group stage had Accies sitting firmly at the top of the table, but a crushing nine-nil defeat to Montrose shattered the visitors confidence.

Tennent’s Sixes: Attackers
Saturday 12 September 2026
Introducing our attacking force for our Tennent’s Sixes team.
The event returns for the first time since 1993 and will take place at Braehead Arena on Saturday 3 and 4 October 2026.
Motherwell are in Group A alongside Hibernian, Hearts and Falkirk. The winner of each group and the runner-up of each group will progress to the knockout stages.

Ross McCormack
Ross McCormack was brought in from Rangers in July 2006, having had a good loan spell at Doncaster Rovers. Maurice Malpas recruited the forward, and although illness impacted his minutes in his first season at Fir Park, he still featured 56 times across the two campaigns in North Lanarkshire and helped the team qualify for Europe.
Scoring 14 goals and assisting eight times, he caught the eye of a number of clubs south of the border and made the move to Cardiff City in 2008.
McCormack briefly returned for a second stint in 2019, but an injury ruled him out for the majority of his time under Stephen Robinson.
Jon Obika
Known as the ‘nicest man in football’ by his colleagues, Jon Obika’s relationship with Motherwell started in January 2023, when he arrived on loan from Morecambe on deadline day.
His arrival coincided with an upturn in form, as Motherwell moved from the relegation shown to the cusp of top-six football. He scored his first goal for the club against Hearts in a 2-0 win in February. His move to the claret and amber was made permanent in the summer, and he would go on to play a further 14 games for the club, scoring three goals in his first full season.
He retired at the end of the 23/24 season and remained at the club, transitioning into the dugout, becoming a first-team coach. During his time in the dugout, he has been a part of the coaching staff that has achieved European football and reached two Premier Sports Cup semi-finals.
John Sutton
John Sutton arrived from Wycombe Wanderers in 2008 and went to become a productive and memorable forward for the club. Featuring 209 times across two spells, scoring 78 goals, Sutton topped our scoring charts for four of the five seasons he was at Fir Park.
He helped the club achieve European football, scored in the semi-final against St Johnstone to secure a spot in the final and scored in the relegation playoff against Rangers in 2015. He joined the small club of strikers who scored more than 20 goals in a season and was able to be a consistent and reliable goalscorer for the five seasons he was with the Steelmen.
