As the dust finally settles on an emphatic victory in the Sky Sports League Cup, the return to league action remains firmly on the horizon, as Motherwell travel to face Celtic under the lights on Friday evening. 

Iain Robinson’s side coolly secured their place in the hat for the Quarter-Final of the Sky Sports Cup, with Motherwell set to face Hibernian for a place in the last four. Motherwell’s hopes of an incredible cup run will have to be sidelined for the moment, as they return to league action this weekend. 

Motherwell will travel to the Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex, with an unbeaten and top of the table, Celtic lying in their wake.

Motherwell head into Friday evening’s contest encouraged by their recent dismantling of local rivals, Hamilton. 

Ellie MacDonald and Mia McArthur both found the target, as Motherwell secured their place in the forthcoming round. 

Goalkeeper, Kayla Scott could make her senior league debut for Motherwell against her former club, after the talented young shot stopper departed Celtic last month. 

Celtic 

Celtic remain unbeaten so far this season, securing four wins from four, as the sit level on points with Rangers at the top of the Scottish Power Women’s Premier League.

• Travelling from the West (Via the M80), take Junction 3 onto the A806 (Initiative Road). 
• Turn left onto Industry Street, then right onto Donaldson Street. 
• After about 400 metres, turn right onto Southbank Road, which leads directly to the ground and its parking area. 

By Train (Travel time of roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes from Motherwell)

• Catch a Scotrail train from Motherwell station to Glasgow Central. These run every 15 to 20 minutes. 
• Walk for about 10 minutes from Glasgow Central to Glasgow Queen Street Station. 
• Catch a second train from Queen Street Station heading towards Alloa, and get off at Lenzie Station. These departures happen every 30 minutes. 
• Finally, walk the remaining distance from the station. Lenzie Station is roughly 1.4 miles from the stadium.

It was a night of severe punishment and a night to forget for Motherwell, with Aberdeen visiting North Lanarkshire and leaving with not only three points, but four goals to their name. 

A quick turnaround to another game is the ideal scenario, and that’s what lies ahead now ahead of the first international break of the season.

Aaron Thomson and Zander McAllister have been named in the Scotland Under 19 squad. 

The refreshed Scotland youth side will travel to Spain to take part in three friendly matches. Led by Tam Courts, Thomson and McAllister will take on Finland in their first match on Thursday 24 September.

Their second match will be against Czech Republic on Sunday 27 September, before rounding off the camp against Ukraine on Wednesday 30 September.

Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell suffered a 4-0 defeat on Tuesday night against Aberdeen.

It may be back-to-back defeats in the Premiership, but Alfred Johansson believes his side will show the correct reaction going into this match, as they look to put Tuesday behind them.

Opposition Report

It’s been an eventful season already for the Dark Blues.

Their Premier Sports Cup league-stage campaign was full of goals. They opened with a 4–2 win over Airdrieonians, followed that with a 5–0 victory at Annan Athletic, drew 1–1 with Ross County and finished the group with a 4–0 win over Clyde. That gave them 10 points and a +10 goal difference, enough to top Group D.

They have registered two wins in the league this season, against Aberdeen and rivals Dundee United. Their gutsy performances have been admired by many, but the injury list is stacking up for Steven Pressley.

Captain Simon Murray suffered an ACL injury, ruling him out for the season. Then Fin Robertson suffered a torn ACL against Hearts, also ruling him out for a significant period. Joe Westley, Ryan Finnigan, Ashley Hay and Ethan Hamilton have all been on the treatment table, with Charlie Riley picking up a broken toe last week also.

Alex Paulsen has received a call-up for the New Zealand squad. 

Paulsen will link up with his international teammates ahead of the double international window starting at the end of this month.

The All Whites are in friendly action and will play four matches. First up is a match against Palestine on Thursday 24 September in China. It’s then a match against China on Sunday 27 September, before facing Panama on Thursday 1 October.

Paulsen will then be up against either Japan or Ecuador on Monday 5 October.

It was a night to forget for Motherwell on Tuesday night, as Alfred Johansson’s side lost 4-0 at Fir Park against Aberdeen. 

A first-half strike from Gavin Molloy had the visitors in front at the interval. Aberdeen doubled their advantage inside 60 seconds of the restart through Connor Ronan, with Ayoub Mouloua and Kevin Nisbet adding further pain on a sore night in ML1.

Following the free weekend, Motherwell just had one change in their starting 11 to that of the side that faced Rangers ten days ago. Jardell Kanga replaced Ibrahim Said in the team as the Steelmen looked for three points.

The first attempt arrived after six minutes when half a dozen players were involved in moving the ball to the edge of the visitor’s box, but Alex Lowry slipped as his shot trundled towards Marius Muller.

Midway through the half, a great through ball sent Regan Charles-Cook racing into the box, but before he could get a shot away, Malloy had muscled him off the ball.

Then, just before the half-hour mark, Muller was forced into his first real save, diving low to his right to push Emmanuel Longelo’s powerful angled drive round his near post.

Nisbet then threatened Paulsen’s goal with a thumping drive from 30 yards, which had the keeper diving across his goal, but the ball swung away from the target.

Five minutes later, the Motherwell stopper was beaten with another long-range effort. Former Steelman Chris Cadden crossed into a packed box before it found Malloy lingering 25 yards from the goal, and his sweet left-foot drive flew across the turf and inside Paulsen’s right-hand post.

Two minutes from the break, Lowry tried to replicate Malloy’s effort, but about the same distance from Muller’s goal, his left foot shot was narrowly off target.

Before Johansson’s half-time team talk could be implemented, his side were two down and facing an uphill struggle.

Within 30 seconds of the restart, Aberdeen headed towards Paulsen’s goal following a mix-up in possession, and when Ronan let fly from 20 yards, the ball took a wicked deflection off Martin Moorman and sent it high past his helpless keeper.

The Fir Park men were dealt another blow seven minutes later when Maswanhise limped off with Seb Palmer-Houlden coming on to lead the line. The Motherwell boss also took the opportunity to bring on the threat of Said for Kanga.

As Motherwell pushed forward to get back into the game and the Dons were defending their box in numbers, another double substitution was made after 67 minutes: Dylan Levitt bringing his experience to the middle of the park and Willy Vogt his pace out wide.

It was almost the perfect response when the Motherwell winger whipped the ball into the six-yard box only for Palmer-Houlden to head over, but the Motherwell crowd reacted as they hoped for a comeback.

The last throw of the dice and substitution arrived 15 minutes from the time when Eythor Bjorgolfsson replaced Lowry. And although the towering Norwegian got an immediate touch to try and set up his fellow striker, the killer touch came at the other end.

Stuart Armstrong hoisted the ball into the Motherwell half to send Mouloua racing towards Paulsen’s goal. Motherwell’s backline managed to chase back and get goal side, but the forward shifted the ball onto his right foot and smashed into the top corner in wicked fashion. 3-0 and game over.

It would be 4-0 before the final whistle. Nisbet found himself on the ball on the right edge of the penalty area, and the Aberdeen skipper made no mistake with the finish as the ball kissed off the inside of the post to complete a disappointing evening for the Steelmen.

Joe Hodge was pleased to get trusted with playing matches from the off, as the midfielder reckons it has allowed him to get up to speed and gel with his new teammates a lot quicker than usual. 

Hodge explains how he had watched a lot of Motherwell games last year, and was pushing for a move to North Lanarkshire.
