    Motherwell’s Fortunes

The Steelmen ended their seven-game winless run with a 1-0 victory over St Mirren on Saturday. That rounded off a four-point week, with Motherwell playing three games in six days.

Lukas Fadinger slotted his penalty into the bottom corner for his fourth goal of the season. Ibrahim Said has also scored fourth of the season in the 2-2 draw with St Johnstone last week.

Aside from the positive result, Paul McGinn, Oscar Priestman and Callum Hendry all returned from injury against St Mirren, providing further options across the pitch for Alfred Johansson.

Motherwell have one defeat in their last visits to Dundee United, which came in Michael Wimmer’s first match in charge back in February of last year.

    Opposition Report

Dundee United weren’t in action last weekend, but Jim Goodwin’s side have been one of the in-form sides in the league, picking up 12 points from their last six matches.

In their most recent outing, United came away from Celtic Park with a point which has ensured they remain unbeaten since their last defeat, which came against Motherwell in September.

Zach Sapsford is United’s leading marksman on six goals currently, having scored two in his last two matches against Aberdeen and Celtic.

But it’s Zidane Iqbal in the heart of the side who has impressed in recent weeks with his flair and quality on the ball, with the midfielder yet to taste defeat in Dundee United colours.

    Motherwell 1-0 St Mirren

    Motherwell 1-0 St Mirren

Motherwell ended their seven-game wait for a win with an encouraging display against St Mirren at Fir Park and a deserved 1-0 win.

Lukas Fadinger scored the only goal of the afternoon from the penalty spot, keeping his cool in the 82nd minute to ensure Motherwell picked up their first win in the league since September.

There was some positive team news for Motherwell, with club captain Paul McGinn returning for the first time since May, as he took his place on the bench. Oscar Priestman also returned to a squad for the first time since his injury in August, with Callum Hendry also making his first squad of the season.

Jardell Kanga and Lukas Fadinger were the two changes to Alfred Johansson’s starting 11, with Dylan Levitt and Jordan McGhee dropping to the bench in their place.

With Motherwell winless in seven, there was an air of tension in ML1 as the Steelmen looked to bounce back from the late disappointment on Perth.

The early stages were quiet, but it was Motherwell who looked more likely. The first chance arrived after ten minutes from a corner. The initial corner was dealt with by the St Mirren defence, but the ball landed on Emmanuel Longelo on the edge of the box, and the full-back nudged the bouncing ball back into the path of Tawanda Maswanhise, but the forward’s attempt went over the target.

Three minutes later, there was another chance for the Zimbabwean. An incredible move that started from the goalkeeper and involved a number of players ended up with Kanga setting Longelo up the left channel. He put another inviting cross into the penalty area where Maswanhise was sliding into. Although he got contact on the ball, it wasn’t enough for it to stay on target.

Longelo continued to cause Calvin Ramsay problems. His raw pace saw him get in behind the full-back again before putting another perfect cross across the goal. Some good defending prevented a chance initially, but the ball landed to Tom Sparrow on the edge of the box, and his driven strike was blocked for a corner.

But on 23 minutes, it really should have been 1-0 to the Steelmen. Ibrahim Said got his press perfect and nicked in to steal the ball and earned himself a 1v1 chance with the goalkeeper. The Nigerian drove towards the goal, but Jacob Chapman was able to stop well with his feet to keep the score level.

It was just after the half-hour mark that Alex Paulsen had to be called into action for the first time of the afternoon. A ball wasn’t dealt with by the Motherwell defence, and Eseosa Sule and Killian Phillips forced their way into possession, with the latter driving into the box and shooting from an angle, but Paulsen stopped well before the linesman’s flag went up for offside.

The second-half was underway and Motherwell continued to look threatening. The first chance of the second period arrived within two minutes. A free-kick delivery landed at the feet of defender Jake Girdwood-Reich, and the Aussie opted to shoot on the half-volley, but he couldn’t keep the strike down.

Nine minutes later, there was another huge opening for Motherwell. Tom Sparrow slipped a perfect pass through the lines for Jardell Kanga. He cut inside and laid the ball to Said, who jinked past a sliding defender and tried to find the far post, but fortunately for the visitors, his effort went wide.

The stadium began to get nervy as the clock ticked closer to 90 minutes. Oscar Priestman and Callum Hendry were both introduced following their injury spells, as Motherwell continued to push.

And then on the 82nd minute, Paulsen’s long ball had substitute Regan Charles-Cook chasing; he battled with Fieldson, and the defender nudged the ball away with his arm. The on-field decision was to continue, but eventually VAR ordered Don Robertson to go to the monitor for a look, and eventually he pointed to the spot.

Fadinger was coolness personified from the spot, slotting into the bottom corner with eight minutes to play.

The game really could have been wrapped up just minutes later when Said sent a cross into the path of Eythor Bjørgolfsson, who opted to try a diving header, but the striker’s face ended up grazing the turf, and he scooped the ball over the bar.

In the end, it didn’t matter, as St Mirren created very little in the closing stages and Motherwell secured the crucial win.

Motherwell Team: Paulsen, Sparrow, Girdwood-Reich, Moormann, Longelo, Hodge, Fadinger, Said, Maswanhise, Palmer-Houlden, Kanga.

Motherwell Subs: Connelly, Knight-Lebel, , McGinn, McGhee, Levitt, Priestman, Charles-Cook, Hendry, Bjørgolfsson.

Alfred Johansson reflects on a disappointing end to Wednesday night’s match against St Johnstone, saying the reaction from the players in the dressing room was a positive one.

Alfred Johansson could welcome three players back into his squad for Saturday’s match against St Mirren.

“All of these names will be assessed today to clarify first,” Johansson confirmed.

“It looks like Oscar Priestman, Paul McGinn and Callum Hendry could be available for selection if everything goes well today.

“We have to understand the context of them being available for selection. They don’t have many minutes in them. It will be a case now over the coming month to build them up in terms of game time.

“So we don’t get overexcited that they’re going to be starting games very soon.”

    Next Up: Hibernian (H)

The Quarter-Final of the Sky Sports League Cup awaits the women of steel this weekend, as Motherwell welcome Hibernian to the Bumblebee Stadium on Sunday.

Iain Robinson’s side will conclude their final competitive fixture of October, after a ruthless set of fixtures in the Scottish Power Women’s Premier League.

Motherwell could secure their first Semi-Final appearance since 2024, when they reached the latter stages of the Scottish Cup if they can secure a victory over the Edinburgh side this weekend.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

Despite enduring a merciless run of fixtures, which had the women of steel contesting consecutive matches with league leaders Rangers, 16-time Champions Glasgow City, and top-six rivals Partick Thistle – Iain Robinson’s side secured their second victory of the campaign, defeating Aberdeen in East Kilbride.

Motherwell must overcome their recent frustrating record against Joelle Murray’s side. The women of steel are winless in their last eleven meetings with Hibernian, with their last victory coming in the Scottish capital in 2022. Strikes from Jo Addie, Lori Gardner, and Amy Anderson sealed a historic three-two victory on that day.

Despite some impressive recent performances, Motherwell are without a win in their last three, and will be motivated to earn their rewards this weekend.

    Hibernian

The Edinburgh side have briefly brought their frustrating run of form to a conclusion after successive defeats to Rangers and fierce rivals, Heart of Midlothian.

The Hibees sealed a two-nil victory over Spartans last weekend, with Irish duo Aoife Colvill and Scarlett Herron both finding the target.

The visitors confidently secured their place alongside Motherwell in the Quarter-Final of the Sky Sports League Cup. An eight-one victory over SPWPL 2 competitors, Kilmarnock.

Former Motherwell striker, Tiree Burchill netted a brace alongside English midfielder, Jasmine McQuade. Jessica Ramsay added one, with Libby Smith completing her hat-trick.

Cruel // St Johnstone 2-2 Motherwell

It looked like Motherwell were going to secure their first win in seven attempts, following goals from Ibrahim Said and Tawanda Maswanhise.

With the Steelmen 2-1 up going into the final ten seconds of the match, the losing streak looked like it would be over. Then, in the cruellest of ways, it was snatched away from them.
