Quintuple to live the ultimate dream

Five Motherwell fans are living the dream after signing for the club during the January Transfer Window.

Stephen Grieve (33), David Lindsay (87), Graeme Balmer (35), Joe Smith (31) and Allan Todd (62) all won the chance to officially register as amateur players at the annual Sportsman’s Dinner late last year.

With the formalities now complete, all five will give Stuart McCall headaches when it comes to his team selection.

Both Grieve and Todd are veteran goalkeepers. Stephen is a talented stopper in the Andy Goram mould and Allan almost made it as a ‘Well ‘keeper back in the 1970s but, some forty years later, can now finally realise his ambition.

David, the most experienced of the group, is a right half(!) and was voted the club’s ‘Greatest Ever Fan’ at a ceremony back in 2007.

Joe and Graeme add firepower in attack. Joe has already played and scored at Fir Park as a part of the ‘Matchday Experience’ event last season. Graeme had the honour of representing the supporters at the Phil O’Donnell Tribute Game back in May 2008.

Speaking to motherwellfc.co.uk, McCall said: “They certainly bring experience to the table, that’s for sure!

“In all seriousness, it’s great for these guys to have the opportunity to live their dream. Not many clubs would allow their supporters this privilege, and it’s something that will live with them forever.

“I’ve heard some tough talking in their interviews, so it will be interesting to see how they shape up in the weeks and months ahead.”

TV: Best performance yet for Johansson

Jonatan Johansson hailed his side’s victory in Dingwall as the best performance of his seventeen months in charge.

The Finn watched on as his side cut open the experienced Staggies at will, with second-half goals from Dom Thomas, Craig Moore and Dylan Mackin securing a deserved three points.

The victory, Motherwell’s third on the bounce, lifts the Fir Parkers into second in the Under 20s table, two points behind leaders Rangers.

Speaking to MFC TV after the match, the former Charlton striker said: “I am so pleased with the players. First half we were good and played some nice football but weren’t clinical enough.

[pullquote]I feel it’s the best performance I’ve seen from my boys in my time at Motherwell which is fitting given Ross County was my first match in charge back in August 2012.[/pullquote]

“Thankfully, in the second half, we had both. I feel it’s the best performance I’ve seen from my boys in my time at Motherwell which is fitting given Ross County was my first match in charge back in August 2012.

“Winning has helped us as our confidence levels are much higher and you can see that from the way we are playing both individually and collectively. We are showing more maturity in our performances, which is pleasing.

“We are about to hit a really difficult run of matches, so it was great to get a win tonight, something I hope we take a lot of encouragement from.”

    Ross County U20s 0 – 3 Motherwell U20s

Motherwell turned in their best performance of the campaign so far, beating an experienced Ross County 3-0 on their own turf.

The young Steelmen side were excellent throughout and thoroughly merited the three points, which lifts them into second in the table, two points behind leaders Rangers.

All the goals came in the second half with Dom Thomas, Craig Moore and Dylan Mackin getting their names on the scoresheet.

Jonatan Johansson made just one change from the side that edged out Dunfermline at the Excelsior Stadium last week. Paul Lawson was drafted in, with young Craig McCall forced to accept a place amongst the substitutes.

Barry Smith’s County named the likes of Mark Brown, Scott Boyd, Rocco Quinn and Kevin Luckassen in their starting eleven.

The hosts almost made the perfect start when right midfielder Kyle MacLeod got on the end of a cross from the left, but his header flew a yard over Ross Stewart’s crossbar.

It took the Fir Parkers ten minutes to register their first chance when Steven Higgins fired a low shot at Brown, after clever build-up from Thomas.

Tony Dingwall and Thomas traded long range efforts before Moore headed over for ‘Well and Luckassen fired a stinging shot straight at Stewart.

As the half wore on, ‘Well’s attacking play became more cute and more frequent. A lovely move on the left between Moore and Ferguson presented a chance for Higgins, but it was straight at Brown who saved.

Four minutes later, the same player would again be denied after excellent play between Leitch and Thomas cut the Staggies wide open.

It looked as if it was only a matter of time before Johansson’s men opened the scoring, and they came within inches of doing just that, five minutes before the interval. Thomas collected a loose ball in the middle of the park – striding forward, he cannoned a thirty-yard shot off Brown’s left-hand upright.

‘Well will have felt a little aggrieved at going in at the break level, and it could have been much worse had Scott Boyd’s powerful shot not hit Morgyn Neill and spun away four minutes into the second half.

That would be the last time the Staggies would threaten for some time as a rampant Steelmen ran riot.

Just before that Boyd effort, full-back David Ferguson had got up well at the back post to meet a McCafferty cross from the right, but his header hit the side netting.

Motherwell eventually got the goal their play deserved, and it was a clever piece of football that opened up the home defence.

Moore’s short corner gave Lawson time on the edge of the area. He slid a nice ball towards Neill, who helped it on Thomas who was prodded home from close range. Simple but attractive stuff!

The visitor’s tails were up and Moore had two quick-fire chances to make it two, shortly after. The first was a shot deflected wide, the second a header from a Lawson cross, which flew over.

Motherwell’s attacks had become relentless by this point; Higgins again screwed over and Moore almost got on the end of a Thomas cross but it was just behind ‘Well’s top scorer adn the chance was gone.

‘Well introduced Dylan Mackin in place of Steven Higgins for the last quarter and the big striker would be involved almost straight away as ‘Well finally doubled their lead.

Lawson knocked it forward to the substitute, who wasted no time helping it on to McCafferty. The winger used the pace on the ball to prod it through for Moore who sent the ball looping over the out-rushing Brown and into the net.

Incredibly, after failing to test Ross Stewart in the ‘Well goal for the majority of the match, County striker Luckassen came within an inch of pulling his side back into things, only for his curling shot to rebound back off the post.

It would prove a vital miss as ‘Well would seal the game just two minutes later, and Mackin would grab his first ever goal for the Under 20s. A quick-thinking Leitch free-kick played in Moore who turned it across the face of goal for the 17-year old who slammed home off a County defender.

It was the last real action of a thoroughly entertaining evening. Johansson’s men now face a massive double-header against Hibs and Rangers in the next fortnight which will go a long way to defining their season.

Motherwell: Stewart, Ferguson, Cadden, Murray, Neill, Leitch, Lawson (McCall – 85mins), McCafferty (Anderson – 85mins), Thomas, Higgins (Mackin – 75mins), Moore

    Subs Not Used: Currie, Johnstone

    Under 20s head north

Motherwell Under 20s will look to make it three consecutive wins when they face Ross County in Dingwall tomorrow.

The game was originally due to take place at Inverness Clachnacuddin’s Grant Street Park, but inclement weather in the Highlands has forced the game back to the Staggies home pitch.

Following wins over Hearts and Dunfermline, Jonatan Johansson’s men sit fourth in the table, two points behind joint leaders Hibernian, Rangers and Inverness CT.

There is additional motivation for the young Steelmen after County’s 2-1 win at the Creamery Park back in September.

The match will kick-off at 6pm.

    Breathing Space’s 10th anniversary

Breathing Space will be marking its 10th anniversary year as a national service on Breathing Space Day.

The service has teamed up with a number of charities and other organisations to celebrate the milestone, including RNIB Scotland, Carers Trust, Network Rail, British Transport Police, Fife Council and Strathclyde University FC.

Events and activities will follow the theme ‘Stay Connected’ and encourage Scots to look after their mental wellbeing by staying in touch with friends, family and loved ones. Breathing Space will also be launching email and text services later in the year to mark the anniversary.

Tony McLaren, Breathing Space National Coordinator, said:

“Breathing Space Day aims to encourage us to take a step back and consider our mental wellbeing. It is the simple things we can do like catching up with friends, going for a walk and spending time with loved ones, that can help us relax and can contribute to good mental health in the long run”.

“This tenth anniversary year is a significant milestone and we look forward to continuing to offer Scots who are stressed, low, or anxious, a free out-of-hours source of support. It is the small things we can do to stay connected, like picking up the phone to talk things through, which can make all the difference when we are feeling down.”

Minister for Public Health Michael Matheson said:

“Looking after our mental health and wellbeing is crucial and making space for the things that make us happy is one way of looking after our own mental wellbeing.

“The Breathing Space telephone advice line provides a valuable listening ear and signposting service for people experiencing low mood, depression or anxiety. This annual awareness day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the vital role the advice line plays and reflects our broader work to improve the general health and mental wellbeing of the population as well as our work to reduce suicide in Scotland.”

A Breathing Space AdVan, promoting a mental wellbeing message, will tour Fife in the week before Breathing Space Day. Dr Stella Clark, Medical Director Primary Care in NHS Fife and Mental Health Lead at NHS 24 said:

“We can often overlook our mental health, so prioritising a hobby or time with family can contribute to good overall health and wellbeing. We are looking forward to welcoming the Breathing Space AdVan to Fife and promoting the phone service alongside Breathing Space Day activities.”
