    Hearts 3-0 Motherwell

One to forget for the women of steel, as their visit to the Scottish capital ended in defeat, with Hearts comfortably earning three-points at a rainswept Oriam Performance Centre on Sunday.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made three changes from the side that defeated local rivals Hamilton in the Lanarkshire derby last weekend, with defender Shannon Leishman returning to the starting XI alongside Mason Clark in midfield, as Orla Burn watched from the stands – remaining ineligible to face her parent club. Skipper Gill Inglis also returned, with Sophie Black receiving a place amongst the substitutes. Midfielder Amy Bulloch missed out after sustaining an injury midweek.

Academy graduates Hannah Cairns, Teoni Steele, Mia Gillespie, and first-team debutant Lia Young earned a place on the bench.

As the skies opened over the Scottish capital, Hearts’ fast-flowing start to proceedings put the hosts firmly in the ascendency on the soaking slick artificial surface. With 17-minutes on the clock, Carly John’s broke the deadlock for the Jambos, capitalising on a miscommunication in the Motherwell backline, before drilling home the rebound after striking the post on her initial effort.

Lauren Wade made it two in the following minutes, cutting inside from the left flank before curling home a precise finish into the top-right corner. Goalkeeper Rebecca Cameron managed to get a fingertip to the strike, but could only deflect the ball off the crossbar before nestling into the back of the net.

Eilidh Shore rounded off the evening in the early stages of the second-half, with Motherwell having to pick up the pieces before facing Partick Thistle at k-Park next weekend.

    Dundee 1-1 Motherwell

    Dundee 1-1 Motherwell

Motherwell made it five draws from five in the 2025/26 William Hill Premiership, as the game finished 1-1 at Dens Park.

A goal from Tawanda Maswanhise opened the scoring before Dundee levelled early in the second half.

Fresh from the international break, the Steelmen made several changes to the side that lined up against Kilmarnock a fortnight ago. Regan Charles-Cook made his first start since joining the club in the summer, with Stephen Welsh making his debut following his loan move from Celtic.

Johnny Koutroumbis returned to the starting 11 following his short spell on the sidelines. Elijah Just made the bench following his international travels over the last two weeks, with Motherwell Academy Graduate Rocco McColm named on the bench for the first time.

In wet conditions, the first ten minutes was played with largely any clear-cut chances. The first half chance for the Steelmen arrived from a set piece, when Emmanuel Longelo delivered deep to the back post area for Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, who headed back across goal, but nobody in claret and amber was there to convert.

The next chance arrived shortly after on nine minutes. Elliot Watt switched the play eloquently to Longelo, who worked the ball to Ibrahim Said, but the Nigerian fired high and wide.

Longelo was involved again after 15 minutes, winning the ball back on the edge of the Dundee penalty area. Stamatelopoulos fizzed a pass across to Tawanda Maswanhise, but his effort travelled over the bar.

On 22 minutes, Koutroumbis found himself in behind the Dundee backline; he got to the byline and found Maswanhise, but his shot was blocked before it reached the target.

With Motherwell continuing to push for the opener, Longelo produced a wonderful bit of skill to beat his man in the wide area; he clipped the ball to Maswanhise whose header was caught by keeper Jon McCracken.

That was a warning sign. On 33 minutes, Maswanhise went one better. Picking up the ball 25 yards out, he drove into the box, beat his man and drilled into the net to open the scoring. 0-1.

Motherwell came close to a second eight minutes later. A lightning quick counter attack from Said earned Longelo a crack on the volley, but it was blocked.

Another chance came and went for Longelo in first-half stoppage time. A move that started from Motherwell’s own penalty box, the ball was worked through just about every player in the team, before Said found space in the heart of the pitch. Charles-Cook fed Longelo on the overlap, but the effort found the side netting only.

Looking to start the second-half in the same fashion, Motherwell took to the field with no changes to the lineup. But Dundee levelled the game on 48 minutes through Luke Graham, who finished past Ward to bring his side back into the game.

The setback didn’t derail Motherwell’s approach and on 52 minutes, Watt slid Said through and he got on the end of the ball, but Clark Robertson recovered to take the ball.

On 55 minutes, Dundee should have been ahead. Half-time substitute Cameron Congreve teed up Simon Murray, who only had to tap home from eight yards, but the striker dragged the effort wide to the surprise of everyone in the stadium.

Shortly after, Jens Berthel Askou made his first changes, introducing Stephen O’Donnell and Elijah Just to the action. Charles-Cook came off having emptied his tank, with Johnny Koutroumbis also taken off.

The changes seemed to have an instant impact; a ball up the line found Maswanhise who just about kept the ball in play. Stamatelopoulos couldn’t make a clean connection for what would have been a guaranteed goal, but instead the Aussie crashed into the post and required immediate attention on the pitch.

As a result, he had to be withdrawn with Esapa Osong introduced.

And it was the substitute who almost found the visitor’s second of the afternoon on 64 minutes. O’Donnell’s clever cross fell to the feet of Said; he squared to Osong but the striker couldn’t quite get the ball out from under his feet to get a clean strike on goal. He tried to back-heel goalwards, but it was blocked before Lukas Fadinger saw his follow-up effort saved by the keeper.

Fadinger had another go on 69 minutes from distance, as the space opened up in front of the Austrian, he drove forward and struck from 30 yards, but McCraken was equal to the effort.

Maswanhise had a golden chance to net his second. Substitute Just turned his man and slipped the ball through to Maswanhise, he went through one-on-one with McCraken, but the keeper saved his finish.

Oscar Priestman and Kofi Balmer were brought on with just over ten minutes to play, in place of Ibrahim Said and Stephen Welsh.

With the game hanging in the balance, the match entered the final stages with both sides searching for the winner. The pendulum swung in the Steelmen’s favour on 85 minutes, when Dhanda was sent off for a tackle on Fadinger however the away side couldn’t capitalise and left Dundee with a solitary point.

Motherwell Team: Ward, Koutroumbis (57′), Gordon, Welsh (80′), Longelo, Watt, Fadinger, Said (80′), Charles-Cook (57′), Stamatelopoulos (60′), Maswanhise.

Motherwell Subs: Oxborough, O’Donnell (57′), Balmer (80′), Priestman (80′), Halliday, Ross, Just (57′), McColm, Osong (60′).

Matchday five of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign awaits the women of steel this weekend, as they head to the Scottish capital to face Hearts at the Oriam.

An assured 4-1 victory over local rivals Hamilton gifted the women of steel their first victory of the season in the Lanarkshire derby.

Motherwell are on the road for the third time this season after facing both Glasgow City and Rangers.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

Motherwell overcame an early disadvantage before cruising to a dominant 4-1 lead in the second-half, with Sophie Black pulling the hosts level after Chloe Muir made the early breakthrough. Katie Rice, Bailley Collins and academy graduate Hannah Cairns sealed proceedings, with composed strikes in the second-half.

Motherwell will be without defender Jenna Penman, who remains unavailable after sustaining a shoulder injury in the opening matchday against Glasgow City. Striker Dionne Brown could be set to make her second Motherwell debut after rejoining the club on matchday last weekend.

Motherwell will head into this weekend with one goalkeeper after the side departure of Emma Thomson, who returned to print club Hearts after being recalled to Edinburgh.

    Hearts

The Jambos have maintained a strong start to the SWPL campaign, unbeaten in their last three Premier League encounters. A 2-0 victory in the Edinburgh derby over bitter rivals and defending champions Hibernian lifted the Maroon-side of the capital into fourth.

    Apostolos Stamatelopoulos previews Dundee

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos has enjoyed the international period as it has allowed the squad to sharpen up on elements of their game, and work on the small details at both ends of the pitch.

The Australian international is feeling top notch this term, putting the injury woes of last season behind him. With a World Cup approaching, Stamatelopoulos is confident the goals will come for him, and trusts his teammates to keep to delivering.

    August: An unbeaten start

The start of a new season always brings a degree of positivity and enthusiasm for the marathon that awaits the team and its fans. As the 2025/26 league season began at Fir Park, Jens Berthel Askou and his squad were met with the first big challenge in their opening fixtures.

But the month of August, on paper at least, looked to be littered with challenges and obstacles.

Five games, one last 16 Premier Sports Cup tie and three away games on the spin – it looked to be a testing start. Emmanuel Longelo and Elliot Watt take us through the month of August, providing insight into playing in these matches, the mood from camp and ambition for the future.

Jens Berthel Askou ahead of Dundee

Jens Berthel Askou has been pleased with the work completed during the September international window, saying it’s allowed the staff to work with the players closely on the training pitch, and hone in on some key areas that they needed to work on.

The Motherwell manager says all players on international duty have returned healthy, and also spoke on the success of the summer transfer window.

    Hearts recall Emma Thomson

    Hearts recall Emma Thomson

Goalkeeper Emma Thomson has returned to Heart of Midlothian after being recalled by her parent club.

A highly-rated youth talent, Thomson signed on a season-long loan deal last month to bolster the competition for the no.1 jersey at K-Park.

However, injuries within the Hearts squad have forced the Edinburgh side to recall Thomson early from her loan agreement.

“We’re really disappointed to lose Emma, especially at this late stage in the transfer window,” Head Coach Paul Brownlie added.

“Emma had settled in really well at the club, and the healthy competition between herself and Becky was exactly what we’d envisioned, but we understand the situation with her parent club.

Emma leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Motherwell.”

We thank Emma for her efforts at Motherwell and wish her well for the future.

    Motherwell’s Fortunes

There was no matches last weekend due to the international break. But the Steelmen have made a positive start to proceedings in the Premiership this season.

Although still waiting for their first win, Jens Berthel Askou’s men remain undefeated in competitive action in all competitions this season.

Tawanda Maswanhise netted his sixth goal in all competitions last time out against Kilmarnock, with Emmanuel Longelo scoring his third league goal in four games also.

Motherwell had mixed fortunes at Dens Park last season. A 4-1 defeat in December was followed up with a last-minute winner against Dundee in April, when Maswanhise leaped to head home in stoppage-time to seal the win with ten players.

    Opposition Report

Dundee were eliminated from the Premier Sports Cup in the group-stage of this year’s competition. Defeat to Alloa and Airdrie saw the Dens Park side exit the competition.

After four league games, new Dundee manager Stephen Pressley has two draws and two defeats so far. Goals have been difficult to come by for the Dee, with defenders Ryan Astley and Clark Robertson joint top scorers on two for the season, alongside Simon Murray.

    September International Review

    September International Review

We take a look at how our international stars got on over the international period.

    Oscar Priestman

Oscar Priestman wasn’t involved in Australia’s Under 23 14-0 win over Northern Mariana Islands, as the young Aussies looked to qualify for the Under 23s Asian Cup.

The midfielder also wasn’t involved in their second match against Timor-Leste.

In their third and crucial match against China, Priestman was named in the starting 11. He played the full 90 minutes in the 0-0 draw, with that result enough to see the Aussies finish top of the table and qualify for the AFC Asian Cup.

    Elijah Just

In an unfriendly-friendly double header against Australia, Elijah Just and the New Zealand squad made their way to Canberra for the first match against the Aussies. Just started and played 70 minutes of the match.

With the score locked at 0-0 going into the closing stages, Just watched from the bench as Australia scored in the 87th minute of the match to snatch victory from the Kiwis.

In the return leg back in Auckland, Just was once again in from the start. He played the full 90 minutes; however, New Zealand would lose 3-1.

    Kofi Balmer

Kofi Balmer wasn’t involved in either of Northern Ireland’s World Cup qualifying matches against Luxembourg and Germany.

    Tawanda Maswanhise

Tawanda Maswanhise and Zimbabwe were looking to get their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track. They faced Benin in their first match, with Maswanhise starting on the right-wing. Maswanhise played 83 minutes of the match, but Zimbabwe narrowly lost out 1-0.

In the second match against Rwanda, Maswanhise played the first 45 minutes. The Warriors went on to lose the game 1-0.

    Aaron Thomson

Aaron Thomson was an unused substitute for Scotland’s Under 17s match against Serbia but subsequently played the full 90 minutes against Portugal. His side produced a great performance to defeat Portugal 3-2.

In their third and final match against Italy, Thomson retained his spot in the starting 11. Scotland lost 2-1 to the Italians.
