Goalkeeper Emma Thomson completes loan deal

Goalkeeper Emma Thomson completes loan deal

Highly-rated young shot-stopper Emma Thomson has completed a season-long loan deal from Heart of Midlothian.

A highly-rated youth talent, Thomson came through the ranks at local rivals Hamilton Accies, becoming the club’s number one at only 16-years of age.

Thomson’s talents soon impressed, with the goalkeeper named the youngest recipient of the Scottish Women’s Premier League Player of the Month award since the formation of the SWPL for her Player of the Match performance against Motherwell at New Douglas Park in 2024.

Her ability soon caught the eye of Edinburgh-side Spartans, and Thomson made the switch to the Scottish capital the following season, making nine-appearances for Jack Beasley’s team.

The now 17-year-old departed Spartans this summer, joining Eva Olid’s Hearts side on a permanent full-time contract until 2027.

“I’m ecstatic to be here at Motherwell,” Thomson said.

“Motherwell have been competing amongst the full-time sides in the league, and I felt that it would be the perfect environment for me to develop into an established first-team goalkeeper.

“Becky [Cameron] is a very strong goalkeeper in this league, and someone I hope to really learn from this campaign. I can’t wait to get started.”

Thomson has remained a consistent presence for the Scottish National team, receiving caps at both Under-16 and Under-17 levels.

“We’re really pleased to have Emma at the club,” Head Coach Paul Brownlie added.

“To be a regular starter in the SWPl at only 16-years of age speaks highly to the belief that so many Head Coaches have shown in her attributes as a goalkeeper.

“Despite only being 17-years-old, Emma will add vital competition to our goalkeeping department, and we’re really pleased to have two talented goalkeepers pushing each others standards this season.”

    Orla Burn seals loan deal

    Orla Burn seals loan deal

Defender Orla Burn has completed a season-long loan deal from Heart of Midlothian.

The Scottish youth international secures her move to North Lanarkshire after breaking through the youth ranks in the Scottish capital.

16-years-old, Burn has represented her national team at the under-16 age category, making five appearances whilst scoring once.

“I’m really pleased to add Orla to the squad,” Head Coach Paul Brownlie added.

“Orla is a talented young defender, who could make an impact in our squad whilst learning from the experienced players in the team.

“I’m looking forward to supporting Orla’s development this season.”

Burn made her competitive Scottish Women’s Premier League debut against the women of steel last May.

“I’m really excited to be at the club,” Burn said.

“I’ve really wanted to start establishing myself as a regular player in a competitive first-team environment.

“Motherwell have had a strong track record in bringing through young players, and I hope to be the next to breakthrough at the club.”

Jens Berthel Askou previews St Mirren

Manager Jens Berthel Askou believes his side will be coming up against a completely different side in the form of St Mirren, compared to what they have faced this season. He believes the team will have to adapt their game and be patient throughout the 90 minutes.

The boss provides a squad update, as well as discussing the responsibility put on Apostolos Stamatelopoulos being the only fit striker available for the first-team.

Matty Connelly joins Airdrie on loan

Matty Connelly joins Airdrie on loan

Goalkeeper Matty Connelly has joined Championship side Airdrie on loan for the rest of the season.

Connelly made his first-team debut against Peterhead in the Premier Sports Cup last month and also kept a clean sheet in his second match against Stenhousemuir.

“Matty has impressed all of us over the summer with his attitude and composure when he got his first minutes for us,” Jens Berthel Askou said.

“He’s been brilliant in training, and we have been looking for the best setup for his continued development, which we have now found in this loan.

“While he will earn important minutes at a competitive level in a club with a similar approach to the game as us, he’ll still be with us once a week and be part of our environment.

“I’m sure that we’ll get a better, stronger and wiser goalkeeper back who is able to compete even harder for his place in the team when he returns.”

    Good luck, Matty.

    Eseosa Sule injury update

    Eseosa Sule injury update

Eseosa Sule is set to be missing for a period of time after sustaining an injury.

After constant and continuous communication between both clubs since the injury occurred, it has been decided that the West Brom loanee will return to his parent club to begin the rehabilitation process and will return to Motherwell when he has completed his recovery.

“Eseosa has made a very good impression since he arrived and was growing with the team and developing really well until his injury,” Jens Berthel Askou said.

“It’s very unfortunate for him and us that we will now be missing him for a while. We all look forward to his return to full fitness and for him to continue his journey with us on the pitch.”

    Speedy recovery, Eseosa.
