    Next up: Ross County

Our prolonged absence from first team action comes to an end with the visit of Ross County.

After seeing the previous two matches cancelled due to Covid-19 issues with opponents, Motherwell play host to the Staggies on Saturday, 24 October. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Season ticket holders and foreign-based fans can watch through their normal international subscription at live.motherwellfc.co.uk.

A pay-per-view match pass is also available for £12 to all other fans, from both teams, at ppv.motherwellfc.co.uk.

    Tale of the tape

The two sides met on the opening day of the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership season in Dingwall.

Liam Donnelly missed a penalty in the Monday night fixture, with Ross Stewart netting from the spot for the hosts in a 1-0 win.

Before that, Motherwell were victorious in the previous two encounters, winning 4-1 at Fir Park and 2-1 away on their travels on Boxing Day last year.

    Form guide

Motherwell will have waited almost a month since their last encounter – a defeat to Rangers – due to two call-offs due to Covid-19 issues with planned opponents.

County have won one of their last five league matches, which came in a 1-0 win at St Johnstone in mid-September.

On Betfred Cup group stage duty, County drew 3-3 with Montrose away – having been 3-0 up – before taking the bonus point in the penalty shootout. They then defeated Arbroath 2-1 at home.

    St Mirren match cancelled

Our Scottish Premiership match with St Mirren has been cancelled.

Our opponents have informed the SPFL that they are unable to fulfill the fixture.

St Mirren have told the league that, due to a number of positive tests for Covid-19 amongst their playing squad and coaching staff, they have only 12 registered fit players, including four goalkeepers, available the match.

We will await further guidance from the league.

    PJ Morrison loaned to Falkirk

    PJ Morrison loaned to Falkirk

PJ Morrison has joined Falkirk on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.

The young goalkeeper heads to the League One side as they look to win promotion to the second tier.

The move represents another important step in his development, having also recently been called into the Scotland Under 21 side.

“It is vitally important for PJ to gain valuable experience at first team level,” manager Stephen Robinson said. “That is especially true for a goalkeeper like him.

“We have no reserve fixtures this season. Because of that, we feel the development of our young players is being affected.

“The loan system is the way to bridge this gap. Instead of sitting on our bench or in the stands, they get the experience of training with us but also playing matches at a good level.”

Morrison joins Jamie Semple (Cove Rangers), Ross MacIver (Greenock Morton), Harry Robinson (Queen of the South) and Sam Muir (Gretna) in going out on loan.

Bevis Mugabi out with shoulder injury

Bevis Mugabi out with shoulder injury

Bevis Mugabi will be out for four to six weeks with a dislocated shoulder.

The defender, who has established himself as an important figure in the Motherwell backline, suffered the injury on his return to training earlier this week.

“It is a blow to lose Bevis,” manager Stephen Robinson said.

“He has played his way into the team and acquitted himself very well.

“He just seems to be unfortunate that when he gets a run of games, he suffers an injury.”

‘Well seven round off international break

‘Well seven round off international break

A magnificent international break for Motherwell’s players ended on Wednesday with further success.

Declan Gallagher and Stephen O’Donnell both started again for Scotland and came home after contributing heavily to three wins and three clean sheets for the national team.

Both impressed again as Ryan Fraser’s goal was enough to defeat the Czech Republic 1-0 at Hampden in the UEFA Nations League, following on from a 1-0 win over Slovakia in the same competition and a penalties win over Israel in the UEFA Euro 2020 play-off semi-final.

Scotland now top their UEFA Nations League group as they play for promotion to League A and, should they continue their positive results, could guarantee themselves a 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off position.

Steve Clarke’s side are also preparing for their UEFA Euro 2020 play-off final match with Serbia in November, with Gallagher and O’Donnell very much in contention to take part.

Trevor Carson was prepared to be on the bench for Northern Ireland as they headed to Norway for their final UEFA Nations League match of the break.

However, an injury to Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the warm-up saw the ‘Well keeper drafted in at the last minute for his first international appearance in almost two years.

Norway won 1-0 on the night, but Carson impressed between the sticks as he looks to claim a place in the team for their UEFA Euro 2020 play-off final in November.

Barry Maguire got himself on the scoresheet for Scotland Under 21s, as they kept up the pressure at the top of their group with a 7-0 win in San Marino.

Fraser Hornby became the highest-ever scorer for the age level with a hat-trick, with ex-Well man David Turnbull also grabbing a goal.

Allan Campbell missed the game through suspension, with PJ Morrison on the bench.

Bevis Mugabi returned on Tuesday from a warm-weather training camp in Dubai, as his Uganda side gear up for crucial AFCON qualifiers in November.

    Tale of the tape

St Mirren are unbeaten in their last three matches against the Steelmen, picking up two wins and a draw.

The last was a 2-1 victory at Fir Park in February, which came a week after their penalty shootout win in the Scottish Cup.

Motherwell roared back from 4-1 down to take the game to extra time, before losing on spot kicks.

Conversely, Motherwell are unbeaten in their last four in Paisley, drawing one and winning three.

    Form guide

Stephen Robinson’s men were on a run of four wins from five before being disrupted by back-to-back defeats away to Hapoel Beer-Sheva and at home to Rangers.

St Mirren came from two down to draw 2-2 in their Betfred Cup group stage match at Queen of the South on Saturday, before gaining a bonus point in the shootout.

Before that, a 4-1 home win in the cup over Partick Thistle came off the back of six consecutive league defeats, with their last positive Premiership result coming in the form of a 1-1 home draw with Ross County on 22 August.

    International round-up

    International round-up

Declan Gallagher and Stephen O’Donnell were again pivotal as Scotland recorded back-to-back victories.

A 1-0 UEFA Nations League win over Slovakia strengthened the national side’s position at the top of the group, ahead of Wednesday’s visit of Czech Republic.

O’Donnell was the creator for Lyndon Dykes’ decisive goal, sending in a pinpoint cross from the right which the QPR striker steered home.

The result marked the second win and second clean sheet for Scotland with the Motherwell pair in the backline, following the 0-0 draw and penalty win over Israel last week in the UEFA Euro 2020 play-off semi-final.

Trevor Carson was among the substitutes as Northern Ireland were defeated 1-0 by Austria in their UEFA Nations League group match.

Several hundred fans were allowed in to watch at Windsor Park, as Ian Baraclough’s side prepare for their UEFA Euro 2020 play-off final with Slovakia in November.

Allan Campbell and Barry Maguire both featured on Friday as Scotland’s Under 21 side pulled off a crucial 2-0 home win over Czech Republic at Tynecastle Park.

Together with goalkeeper PJ Morrison, the team are now in San Marino for a match on Tuesday in which a win would send them two points clear at the top of their UEFA Under 21 Championship qualifying group with two games to go.

Bevis Mugabi’s stint with Uganda at a training camp in Dubai comes to a close on Monday, after a week spent in training ahead of crucial AFCON qualifying matches next month.

Motherwell duo feature as Scotland progress

Declan Gallagher and Stephen O’Donnell started for Scotland as the national team progressed to the final of the play-offs for UEFA EURO 2020.

The pair were pivotal as Israel were eventually toppled 5-3 on penalties, after a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes.

In doing so, they became the first Motherwell duo to start a match together for the national team since Brian Martin, Paul Lambert and Rab McKinnon all lined up against Japan in the Kirin Cup in 1995.

Serbia lie in wait in the final in November away from home for a place in next summer’s tournament.

‘Well keeper Trevor Carson was also in the squad as Northern Ireland got to their play-off final with a penalty win against Bosnia and Herezegovina.

They will face Slovakia in the final.
