    Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell made it four league games unbeaten on Saturday, registering their first win in Kilmarnock since 2021. Tawanda Maswanhise scored twice to move himself to the top of the goalscoring charts in the Scottish Premiership, with Apostolos Stamatelopoulos also finding the back of the net.

That result means it’s 10 points from a possible 12 in the league for Jens Berthel Askou’s side, as they currently sit sixth in the standings.

The Steelmen have only won one of the last six meetings with Hibernian. That win came in October 2024 when Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Andy Halliday both scored to defeat the Hibees 2-1 at Easter Road.

    Opposition Report

Hibernian come into this game on strong form, winning four of their last six matches and losing once. David Gray’s side are third in the table, five points off of second-placed Celtic.

Summer signing Jamie McGrath scored his sixth goal of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Dundee. Martin Boyle and Kieron Bowie are both on five goals this season, with the latter finding the back of the net on Saturday also.

    Kilmarnock 1-3 Motherwell

    Kilmarnock 1-3 Motherwell

Motherwell ended an almost five-year wait for a win at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon, defeating Kilmarnock 3-1 in Ayrshire.

Motherwell took the lead after 16 minutes after Emmanuel Longelo found space down the left and curled in a ball to the back post which evaded former Well man Dom Thompson and landed at the feet of Tawanda Maswanhise, who blasted in his tenth goal of the campaign.

The visitors’ lead was doubled on the 26th minute, and it was the Zimbabwean on the scoresheet again before the half was out. Kilmarnock got off to the perfect start in the second period, with Scott Tiffoney slotting past Calum Ward to halve the deficit early on in the second-half.

But any chance of a comeback was diminished when substitute Apostolos Stamatelopoulos dispatched a penalty to make sure of the points.

Following the final international break of 2025, Jens Berthel Askou made two changes to his starting 11 from two weeks ago. In came Callum Hendry and Ibrahim Said, with Stamatelopoulos and Just dropping to the bench.

The match had little openings in the early stages, with Motherwell settling down quicker than the hosts as they racked up early possession. The first real chance of the afternoon fell to Greg Kiltie, whose shot was saved by Ward and subsequently by Stephen Welsh.

As the rain began to pour, Kilmarnock fans’ frustration grew as Motherwell contained the hosts to their penalty area. And with the pressure mounting, Motherwell made the most of it on the 16th-minute mark. Longelo beat his man before floating a perfect cross to the back area, just evading the Kilmarnock defence; Maswanhise controlled and slotted home to open the scoring.

Motherwell continued to probe for the next ten minutes, popping the ball around the edge of the Killie box. A scuffed clearance earned Motherwell a corner, and they took full advantage. With quick corner routines seemingly now a Motherwell speciality, Longelo passed the corner cutely to Callum Slattery; he teed up Maswanhise for a strike, and with the Zimbabwean’s first effort blocked, he made sure of the follow-up and blasted home to double his side’s advantage.

The visitors were in full control of proceedings, with Kilmarnock’s David Watson having a half-chance when he took a strike from 25 yards which was comfortably taken in by Ward.

Motherwell almost made it three before the half was out. Longelo was again involved; he slid across towards Callum Hendry, who heard the shout from his teammate behind him to leave, so he let the ball go through his legs so Slattery could have a go, but his strike was well saved by Tobi Oluwayemi.

Watson again had a go from a distance in the first-half, but his strike sailed over the bar without troubling Ward in the Motherwell net.

Kilmarnock needed a strong start to the second-half to ease the tensions, and that’s exactly what they did. With a Motherwell attack breaking down, the ball was worked to Bruce Anderson, who slipped in his striking partner Tiffoney, who did well to stay onside; he raced through on goal and dispatched it past the keeper. 49 minutes, 1-2.

The momentum has swung in the opposite direction, and the hosts now had their tails up. Former Motherwell man Thompson sent a driving effort on target, but Motherwell captain Paul McGinn was on hand to block and clear shortly after Kilmarnock’s goal.

Just after the hour mark, Askou opted to use his bench, bringing on Just, Stamatelopoulos and Liam Gordon, and the Aussie striker had an immediate impact. McGinn curled a searching pass into the channel which Stamatelopoulos latched onto; he got in ahead of Brad Lyons, who bundled the striker down inside the penalty. To everyone’s surprise, the referee allowed play to continue, but VAR ordered him over to the monitor shortly after.

A quick look ensured the right decision was eventually reached and a penalty was awarded. Stamatelopoulos stepped up and dispatched into the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way and restoring the two-goal advantage.

Lewis Mayo came closest for Killie following the penalty, with the defender rattling an effort off the bar, but it would be the only major chance in the closing stages, as Motherwell controlled to the finish to remain in the top-six.

Motherwell Team: Ward, Koutroumbis, McGinn, Welsh, Longelo, Fadinger, Watt, Slattery, Maswanhise, Said, Hendry.

Motherwell Subs: Connelly, Gordon, Balmer, Sparrow, Stamatelopoulos, Just, Ross, Priestman, Charles-Cook.

    November international review

    November international review

We had three players away representing their country during this international window, let’s find out how they got on.

    Tawanda Maswanhise

Tawanda Maswanhise was called up by Zimbabwe, who appointed Marian Marinica as their new manager ahead of these two friendly matches against Algeria and Qatar.

The Warriors were using these two games as vital preparation for their AFCON campaign starting next month. Maswanhise was named in Marinica’s first team as the new boss, with the winger playing the first-half against Algeria.

Zimbabwe lost the first match against Algeria 3-1. In their second match against Qatar, Maswanhise was not involved in the squad. Zimbabwe came from behind to defeat Qatar 2-1 in their second and final match of the window.

    Elijah Just

Elijah Just was back in action for New Zealand, as they also prepare to play in a major tournament next summer in the 2026 World Cup.

New Zealand travelled to America to take on Colombia and Ecuador. Just started the first match against Colombia and played over 70 minutes before coming off. Going 2-0 down in the game, New Zealand pulled a goal back with ten minutes to go but couldn’t find the equaliser and lost out 2-1 on the night.

Just started in New Zealand’s second match against Ecuador. Just played over an hour for his country, with Ecuador winning 2-0.

    Regan Charles-Cook

Regan Charles-Cook travelled to Grenada for their one match this month. Grenada faced off against the US Virgin Islands in a friendly match on home soil.

Charles-Cook started and was the star of the show for his nation. With his side 1-0 up, the Motherwell winger added a second and third in the first-half, before assisting Zade Douglas for a fourth goal. The US Virgin Islands pulled one back in the second-half but it was an impressive display for Charles-Cook, who played 73 minutes.

    Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell have been in strong league form coming into this match. The Steelmen picked up seven points from a possible nine before the international break.

Sitting on 15 points after 11 matches, Jens Berthel Askou’s side have only tasted defeat twice in the league campaign.

Kilmarnock away has proven to be a tricky fixture for Motherwell. The Well’s last victory at Rugby Park came in February 2021, thanks to an Allan Campbell strike. Since then, it’s been four defeats and two draws in the six matches played.

    Opposition Report

Kilmarnock have endured a difficult run of results in the league recently. It’s been five losses in a row for Killie since their last win at the start of October. However, during that run they have played Celtic, Rangers and Hearts.

Stuart Kettlewell’s side have a number of players absent through injury at present and are dealing with a difficult situation regarding goalkeepers at the club. With first-choice keeper Max Stryjek unavailable, 22-year-old Eddie Beach made his Killie debut last month, having had very little first-team experience in his career so far.

Tobi Oluwayemi was recruited on a seven-day emergency loan two weeks ago and played in Kilmarnock’s defeat to Falkirk, but with the loan expired, Beach becomes the only fit first-team goalkeeper at the club.

David Watson continues to prosper for Kilmarnock, scoring three goals this season and having only missed 11 minutes of league action all season.

    October: Filled with drama

Coming into October, Motherwell had four fixtures ahead of them. Taking on Champions Celtic, a home match against Falkirk, travelling to Livingston and then rounding off with a midweek clash against Dundee United at Fir Park.

All eyes were on the Steelmen as they travelled to Glasgow, with many keen to see if they would alter their possession-based football approach at Parkhead.

A short break would be next before facing newly promoted and highly impressive Falkirk at Fir Park as Motherwell looked to build momentum going into the semi-final of the Premier Sports Cup.

It was then the short journey to West Lothian for Jens Berthel Askou’s side, as they faced off against another promoted side in Livingston. October ended with a crucial Wednesday night match with Dundee United at Fir Park.
