The perfect Fir Park send off // Motherwell 3-0 Kilmarnock

Michael Wimmer spoke before this match about how he wanted the perfect send off for the supporters, as Motherwell played their final home match of the league season against Kilmarnock.

On a perfect summers evening, the Steelmen were on track to reach their target as Robbie Deas was shown a red card before the half hour mark.

Luke Armstrong was brought off the bench at the half time interval and he would find the back of the net after Motherwell had been a constant threat throughout the second half. Callum Slattery completed a stunning team goal shortly afterwards, before Armstrong added a third.

The players showed their appreciation following the full time whistle as they made their way around the stands to thank supporters. The perfect end to the perfect night, but Motherwell have one final task ahead of them. A trip to face to Ross County on Sunday.

    Motherwell 3-0 Kilmarnock

    Motherwell 3-0 Kilmarnock

Motherwell won their final home match of the 2024/25 campaign against Kilmarnock on Wednesday night, registering a comfortable 3-0 win.

Kilmarnock were reduced to ten men in the first-half, with Robbie Deas shown a straight red following a VAR review for bringing down Lennon Miller, who was through on goal. From there, the Steelmen dominated proceedings but had to be patient for their opening goal.

Substitute Luke Armstrong found the back of the net on 77 minutes before Callum Slattery scored his seventh of the season just six minutes later. Armstrong was it again on 86 minutes, putting the icing on the cake with a third.

Michael Wimmer made two changes from the side that were defeated by Hearts just four days ago. Harry Paton and Ewan Wilson were brought into the starting 11 in place of Tawanda Maswanhise and Dom Thompson.

There weren’t many clear-cut chances in the early stages of the match. Tom Sparrow saw his header drift wide of the mark from a Wilson cross in what was Motherwell’s best chance thus far.

On 29 minutes, Miller latched onto a neat through-ball and was brought down by Deas just outside the area. Originally shown a yellow card by Duncan Nicholson, VAR recommended an on-field review. After reviewing the footage, the Killie man was shown a red card for the denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

The subsequent free kick was hit on target by Miller but didn’t trouble Kieran O’Hara. As the first half edged closer to its conclusion, Kilmarnock had their best chance of the half. Danny Armstrong fizzed a free kick up and over the wall but was denied by a flying Aston Oxborough, who produced a wonderful stop to prevent the ball from finding the top corner.

During the half time interval, Wimmer made an alteration, introducing Armstrong to the action in place of Harry Paton. Motherwell began the half strongly and were dominating possession. Tony Watt was unfortunate not to find the back of the net on 50 minutes, with the Dundee United loanee sneaking in at the back post to get on the end of Stephen O’Donnell’s cross; however, O’Hara was a match for his effort.

That sparked everyone in Fir Park, and Motherwell turned it up a gear. Callum Slattery was next to try his luck, with the number eight fizzing an effort on target, but O’Hara was able to punch it clear.

Andy Halliday came agonisingly close to the opener just after the hour mark, trying to curl a low strike towards the far post, but the 33-year-old didn’t find the target.

The chances kept on coming for the hosts, with Armstrong’s deflected effort almost finding the net on 66 minutes. Substitute Moses Ebiye thought he had the opening goal from Miller’s corner delivery, but keeper O’Hara managed to claw the ball away from danger.

Time continued to pass by with Motherwell still left frustrated at not breaking the deadlock. But their patience and dominance eventually paid off when, at 77 minutes, skipper O’Donnell curled an inviting cross into the danger zone where L.Armstrong was primed to bullet a header past O’Hara. 1-0.

The pressure eased, but the intensity increased, and Motherwell went hunting for more. Slattery continued his high-flying end to the campaign, with the midfielder executing a perfectly guided finish into the bottom corner. Game over and 2-0 to the Well.

L.Armstrong managed to grab his fourth goal in Motherwell’s corner on 86 minutes, smashing a strike beyond the keeper to put the cherry on the cake.

The perfect end for the Steelmen’s home campaign this season, with Wimmer still yet to taste defeat in ML1.

Motherwell Team: Oxborough, Sparrow, Casey, O’Donnell, Seddon, Wilson, Halliday, Miller, Paton, Slattery, Watt.

Motherwell Subs: Balcombe, Zdravkovski, Maswanhise, Tavares, Dickson, Andrews, Ebiye, Thompson, Armstrong.

A day to forget in the capital // Hearts 3-0 Motherwell

Premiership status was secured last week, but Motherwell travelled to Edinburgh looking to close the season out strongly.

After a quiet start to proceedings, Hearts got themselves ahead through skipper Lawrence Shankland. Callum Slattery quickly responded finding the back of the net, but VAR controversy followed, with the referee ruling the goal out for offside.

Shankland added a second, with Alan Forrest quickly following up with a third in the second half, putting the game beyond the Steelmen.

Motherwell are in midweek action against Kilmarnock on Wednesday night, as they look to go out on a positive note in front of the home crowd.

    Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell lost out 3-0 on Saturday against Hearts, meaning there’s three clubs in contention to finish seventh. Only two points separates two points Hearts, Motherwell and Kilmarnock.

The Steelmen will be hoping to register their first win over Kilmarnock in the league this season, with the only win coming in the Premier Sports Cup back in September.

    Opposition Report

Kilmarnock will be coming into this game full of confidence having won four of their last five matches. That loss came against Champions Celtic four games ago.

Those results have pulled Kilmarnock away from the relegation play off spots and now have aspirations of finishing seventh. Bruce Anderson is now on 11 goals for the season in all competition, as he continues to be Killie’s leading marksman.

    Motherwell 0-6 Hearts

    Motherwell 0-6 Hearts

It transpired to be an afternoon of reflection for the women of steel, as visitors Hearts punished Motherwell’s lack of conviction in the final third.

Former Motherwell starlet Kayla Jardine reintroduced herself to the K-Park faithful, netting against her former side with a precise header guided into the bottom-left corner. Less than a minute later, Hearts had a second in similar circumstances, with an enticing delivery into the box being directed onto the Motherwell crossbar before unfortunately ricocheting off of the back of Emily Mutch before nestling into the Motherwell goal.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made four changes from the side that were defeated by title-chasers Rangers at Broadwood Stadium last weekend. Emily Mutch returned between the sticks, with striker Eilidh Austin, Shannon Leishman, and Sophie Black all returning to the starting Xi. Skipper Gill Inglis also returned to the matchday squad following a recent spell sidelined with injury.

Motherwell started firmly on the front foot, with countless opportunities on goal pinning the visitors deep into their own penalty area. Louisa Boyes’ swirling right-footed effort rattled the far post, with Bailley Collins also denied after going one-on-one with the Hearts stopper.

The midfielder then curled a hopeful strike moments later that fell agonisingly wide of the target.

Motherwell continued to dominate the majority of the first-half, but the visitors soon capitalised on Motherwell’s frustrations in the final third.

Monica Forsyth chipped a perfectly-weighted delivery from the left-flank across the Motherwell penalty area, and former Motherwell midfielder Kayla Jardine calmly dispatched a well-placed header into the bottom-left corner. Less than a minute later, Hearts had a second, with a similar delivery causing the Motherwell backline problems, and Hearts fortunately found the target after a deflection off the back of goalkeeper Emily Mutch.

Two-goals behind at the break after controlling much of the opening 45-minutes, Motherwell were forced to alter formation and try to chase the game. Hearts continued to press, and soon took full control of the contest. Striker Bailey Hutchinson converted a third moments into the second-half, with strike partner Olufolasade Adamolekun making it four before the hour-mark. Six-minutes later, Addison Handley calmly placed her strike into the bottom-right corner from around 12-yards out to make it five. After teeing up Jardine for the opening goal, Forsyth soon added her name to the scoresheet after coasting through the Motherwell backline, and placing her attempt under the on-rushing Emily Mutch.

Motherwell will have to quickly regroup before facing Glasgow City in the final home matchday at K-Park on Wednesday evening.

    Hearts 3 – 0 Motherwell

    Hearts 3 – 0 Motherwell

Motherwell’s bid to make it three consecutive wins ended with a 3-0 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle.

After the Steelmen secured their place in the top-flight for a 41st consecutive season last weekend, the focus swiftly turned to sealing a seventh-placed spot in the Premiership table.

Motherwell started brightly, with Callum Slattery drilling the most enticing opportunity of the half narrowly over the Hearts crossbar.

The hosts soon took the lead shortly after the half-hour mark. Shankland was afforded far too much space in the outskirts of the Motherwell penalty area, and the Scottish talisman drove forward and capitalised with a powerful low shot beyond the reach of Aston Oxborough.

The Steelmen then found themselves level after an excellent interchange of play fell kindly to Callum Slattery at the edge of the box, with the Englishman rifling a brilliant half-volley into the bottom-left corner. The visitors celebrations were short-lived, as a seemingly never-ending VAR check eventually came to the conclusion that Dan Casey blocked the view of Ryan Fulton, despite the goalkeeper having a full unobstructed view as Slattery stuck the ball.

Heading into the second-half one-behind instead of level, Motherwell were forced to chase the game, and Hearts took full advantage. Just as you began to wonder if Michael Wimmer’s side could come from behind for a third successive game, all hope was gone on the hour mark when the home side added a quick-fire double.

An inviting delivery across the face of goal was prodded in by Lawrence Shankland for his second of the game and moments later, Alan Forrest drilled home the rebound following a decent stop from Aston Oxborough.

Motherwell will return to action midweek, when they welcome Kilmarnock in the final matchday at Fir Park of the 2024/25 Premiership season.
