The manager gives his thoughts as his side come from behind to take all three points against St Johnstone.

Motherwell took a major step towards securing their Premiership status on Saturday afternoon, defeating St Johnstone 3-2 at Fir Park.

Callum Slattery drew Motherwell level after going 1-0 down before Johnny Koutroumbis’ effort found the back of the net just minutes later to turn the game on its head. Tom Sparrow added a third just after the interval, before St Johnstone scored a consolation before the end of the 90.

Motherwell saw off the challenge of St Johnstone for a hard-fought, narrow but deserved win.

The three points were sufficient to ensure that the Fir Park side would be clear of the automatic relegation.

The extensive injury list, which has limited team selection for almost the entire season, posed another problem for the Well boss. Without Liam Gordon and Kofi Balmer, it left Dan Casey as the only recognised central defender in the starting line-up with Stephen O’Donnell and Johnny Koutroumbis alongside the Irishman.

St Johnstone showed no signs of a Scottish Cup semi-final hangover, as needing three points to maintain their slim hopes of surviving relegation, they pushed forward with three up front from the kick-off.

The revamped Well defence was exposed after only six minutes.

Josh McPake powered past Koutroumbis on the left, and his cutback was confidently slammed home by Kirk.

A good break-up field earned the home side its first corner after 20 minutes. Andy Halliday whipped the ball into a packed box, but when the ball was laid back to Harry Paton, he fired over the bar from 16 yards.

Gradually the Steelmen found some half-chances as the game moved towards the interval.

A quick turn at the edge of the box and drive from Slattery after 28 minutes found the ball skimming a couple of feet beyond Andy Fisher’s right-hand post.

A minute later the Well midfield man was on target; this time, his 20-yard shot forced Fisher to stretch himself to push the ball round his left-hand post.

With a bit more urgency in their play, the pressure towards the Saints goal was increasing, and after 38 minutes, the game was level.

Tony Watt chased a ball down the left touchline, and after getting beyond Sam Curtis, he cut the ball back for Slattery, who, third time lucky, slid a low finish inside Fisher’s right-hand post for his fifth since his comeback from injury.

A minute later, Well were ahead, and once again, Watt was the architect. Having sneaked past his marker to get to the byeline, the on-loan striker delivered a teasing ball across the face of the goal. Koutroumbis at the back post made sure of grabbing his first goal for the club, hammering it off the far post and into the net to change the complexity of the game.

Saints tried to get back into the game before the interval, but facing a couple of free kicks, the home defence held firm.

However, it should have been game over within three minutes of the restart when the Fir Park men extended their lead.

Dom Thompson withstood a heavy challenge on the left of the box to get back on his feet. His floated ball into the six-yard box was met by Sparrow, who stabbed it over the line to make it 3-1.

Ellery Balcombe then made his first save low to his left to hold a long-range effort from Steven Taylor.

The Well keeper had to be smart to smother the ball on his goal line as former Hearts striker Uche Ikpeazu tried to force it home.

At the other end, the home side should have extended its lead after 68 minutes. Watt was again the provider, working a quick exchange with Paton on the left before chipping the ball to the waiting Sparrow, who could head the ball straight at Fisher.

A minute later, it was Saints’ Watt who grabbed the headlines when his speculative shot from 22 yards bounced past Balcombe to reduce the leeway and give the visitors a boost.

In an attempt to put the game to bed, Wimmer made his first substitution after 68 minutes, sending on Luke Armstrong to join Watt up front.

It almost paid off 10 minutes later when Armstrong cut the ball back to the corner of the six-yard box, and Watt’s firm snapshot was blocked by the keeper, denying him a thoroughly deserved goal for his massive contribution to the game.

That was recognised by the Fir Park fans when Watt and Halliday had a standing ovation when they made way for Moses Ebiye and Davor Zdravkovski for the final 10 minutes.

With five minutes of additional time signalled and Saints pressing for an equaliser, Kai Andrews replaced Slattery, as his efforts were also recognised by the fans.

As the Perth side made a final onslaught on the Well goal and Wimmer screamed for his players to push Saints further up the pitch, the makeshift defence held out for a narrow win and three points to erase the threat of automatic relegation.

Johnny Koutroumbis has had his fair share of battles to face since coming to Scotland in the summer, but the Aussie defender has maintained a positive mindset throughout and is ready to help the team when called upon. 

Koutroumbis talks about having to be patient throughout the season, playing in different positions and what his journey, which has included beating cancer, has been like for him.

Manager Michael Wimmer has provided a squad update in his latest press conference ahead of Saturday’s match against St Johnstone. Wimmer says he wants to get the club’s top flight status confirmed as soon as possible, to avoid any sort of relegation fight. 

The German also said players will be fighting to remain at the club next season, as he had spoken to every player about their current situation, making it clear to the each individual what it is they need to do before the season ends.

For those renewing their season ticket from 2024/25, concession tickets are for anyone aged 60 and over. For those buying new in 2025/26, it’s 65 and over.

The over 60 concession is for those who currently have this price class, it won’t be valid for any renewing Adult season ticket holders who are now 60.

In addition, concession prices also apply to full time students with a valid matriculation card.

For £10 per year, payable alongside your season ticket, disabled supporters, both wheelchair and ambulant, will have access to away match tickets within disabled areas together with car parking, where available.

Members are also invited to regular DSA meetings where they have the ability to raise any concerns that can be taken directly to the club.

WORDS FROM BRIAN CALDWELL

Firstly, I want to thank everyone for their support during the 2024/25 season. The support the players received at home and on the road was brilliant, and I am really grateful.

The season didn’t have its challenges to seek. We had some very tough times, but it feels like we’re on a fresh path under Michael and Ahmet. The two of them have been a credit to work with so far and are hard at work every day to try and get the team in a good place for next season.

Plans are well underway in that regard. We’re constantly planning and trying to get things in place to make the summer as easy as possible. We have a number of players under contract for next season.

We managed to get players tied down on longer deals earlier in the season, with most holding options of further years at the club’s discretion, to ensure we didn’t have as large a turnover of players that Motherwell has had in previous years and to safeguard the football club.

There are a lot of good things going on off the pitch at the club too. The relationship between the club and Well Society is stronger than ever, with everyone working in tandem for the greater good of the football club.

In the year that I have been here, I would like to think we have made small improvements. But I know there are still a lot of things that we would like to do better, and we have further ideas here we would like to execute.

PAY BY STANDING ORDER

We are offering the option of paying your season ticket through a standing order payment each month.

There is the option to pay your season ticket over a maximum of six standing order payments directly to the club, with no interest payments or fees, providing full payment is made by December 2025.

To set this standing order up, you must contact us directly and complete a form.

Please call into the Ticket Office to arrange.

Digital Season Tickets

A digital Season Ticket for the 25/26 campaign will again be available.

Existing Season Ticket holders can continue to use their physical Season Ticket card but if you would like to change to a digital Season Ticket, you will need to select this option when purchasing your Season Ticket(s) and your physical card will become void.

If you opt for the digital version, you will receive information by email on how to add your Season Ticket to your digital wallet after you have completed your purchase.

ACTIVATING YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNT

If you haven’t already registered online and are a season ticket holder, you must activate your account.

If you’re a season ticket holder looking to renew your season tickets and/or buy cup game tickets, you must activate your account before you can buy.

To activate your account, select ‘sign in’ from the top right corner of the ticket page.

Look for Have an existing account? Activate it now.

Input your customer number and surname, then press ‘Find my account’.

Verify your contact details, including an email you have access to, and create a password. Then, save your details. You’re in.

If you wish to renew your season ticket, all you have to do is login to your online ticketing profile at the top right-hand side of the page.

Once you have logged in, you should then have a notification to ‘renew now’.

Motherwell’s Fortunes

The Steelmen narrowly missed out on a top-six spot, after a 0-0 draw with Hearts last time out. With no game last weekend, Motherwell have had two weeks preparation for their final Saturday home match this season.

Motherwell have got the upper on hand on St Johnstone twice earlier in the season, coming out 2-1 winners at McDiarmid Park and in North Lanarkshire. Saints have won the last two meetings in January.

Opposition Report

St Johnstone made the trip to Hampden in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup on Sunday, but were dumped out by a rampant Celtic side 5-0.

They remain rooted to the bottom of the table with five games to go, five points behind 11th placed Dundee. Their last victory on the road in the Premiership came at the very start of February, when they beat St Mirren in Paisley 1-0.

Makenzie Kirk has had a terrific season thus far, and although VAR prevented him from scoring a thunderous strike against Celtic on Sunday, the young forward is on nine goals for the season.

All roads lead to the National Stadium this weekend, as Motherwell prepare to stride onto the Hampden turf in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final against Glasgow City. 

Only the Glasgow-side stand in their way of a place in the final two next month, with Motherwell 90-minutes away from their first major domestic cup final since 2018.

Paul Brownlie’s side will also experience their second matchday in the Southside of Glasgow, after contesting the 2023 Scottish Cup Semi-Final against Rangers.

The women of steel will put their top-six shootout on hold this weekend, as they prepare for a monumental season-defining tie against Glasgow City at Hampden Park.

Motherwell have faced the perfect preparation in recent weeks, facing all five full-time teams on a weekly basis, whilst impressing in two hard-fought performances over Hearts and Celtic last week. One of only two part-time teams remaining in the final-four, Motherwell will be looking to defy the odds to earn their place in the Scottish Cup Final next month.

Paul Brownlie will near closer to a full eligible squad this weekend, with Sienna McGoldrick returning to the matchday squad and Jo Addie returning from a recent short-term spell on the sidelines.

Glasgow City

Glasgow City will be looking to restore their place at the top of Scottish Women’s football having last won the Scottish Cup after defeating Hibernian by four-goals to three at Tynecastle in 2019.

Tom Sparrow arrived in the summer of 2024 in ML1, with many only knowing the 22-year-old from his stint just down the road with Hamilton.

Admitting that he was never the best player in his age group at Stoke City in his early years, Sparrow’s approach has always been about giving 100% at all times and leaving nothing out on the pitch. That professional mindset has led him from playing National League North football with Chester in 2023/24 to playing with Motherwell in the top flight of Scottish football the following year.

Show work ethic and adaptability; Sparrow has been deployed as a wing-back more than his natural central midfield role, something he relishes. Learning every day, he has impressed new manager Michael Wimmer quickly and was handed a new contract lasting until 2028.

With his future secure, it’s straight back to work for Sparrow, as he has his eyes firmly set on his next target on the international stage.

Luca Ross has agreed a two-year contract extension, which will see him remain at Fir Park until the summer of 2027. 

The young winger made his debut against Rangers back in 2022 and notched up five first team appearances before joining Annan Athletic on loan for the 24/25 campaign where he has made 24 appearances and scored one goal.

“Luca is a talented young player,” manager Michael Wimmer said.

“He has had a very successful loan spell this season which has aided his development. We want to try and bring as many young players through the system here.

“We hope Luca can continue to develop into a first-team player and I’m looking forward to the staff here helping him achieve that.”

Luca added, “I’ve came through the academy here and have made some appearances for the first-team so I’ll be looking to add more to that.

“It gives me confidence that the manager has seen enough to extend my contract and recently I’ve been training with the first-team which is a great experience.

“I’m really glad to sign the deal and hopefully I can kick on when I return from my loan at Annan and make a positive impression next season.”
