    Elliot Watt becomes our latest signing

    Elliot Watt becomes our latest signing

    Burton Albion skipper Elliot Watt has joined Motherwell on a two-year deal, with the club holding the option of a further year.

    The 25-year-old joins the Steelmen after a six-month stint in the Scottish top-flight at St Johnstone last season.

    “In Elliot we’ve found a hungry, talented and determined young man who already has plenty of experience in the senior game,” manager Jens Berthel Askou said.

    “He has recently had a taste of the Scottish Premiership. He is a highly skilled passer of the ball, dictating the game in possession by always being brave and available. He covers ground well and possesses a strong positional discipline.

    “I’m really pleased that he’s joining us, and he’ll add increased width, quality and competition to our squad. He’s travelled with us to the Netherlands, which will give him the best possible conditions to get included in the group and make an instant impact in our team.”

    In the early stages of his football career, Watt featured in the academy ranks of Liverpool, Blackburn and Preston North End before signing a professional deal at Wolves in 2017.

    Just a few months later, he made his first-team debut for Wolves in the FA Cup. This would be his only appearance for Wolves, with Watt joining Carlisle United on loan in 2020. Although his time in the North of England would be cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Watt still managed to make 14 first-team appearances in his short stint with the Blues.

    Upon the return of football in the summer of 2020, Watt joined Bradford City on a two-year deal, who were managed by Stuart McCall at the time.

    Spending two years at Valley Parade, he racked up 96 appearances, scoring five goals before joining Salford City in 2022. His impact would be clear to see, as in his first season, he was named in the League Two team of the year. Playing 91 games in total and assisting 24 times, he moved to Burton Albion after two years.

    Named captain, Watt made 30 appearances in his first six months with Burton before joining St Johnstone in January 2025. Here, he played nine games, scoring two goals during his time in Perth, one of which came against Motherwell at Fir Park in May.

    “I’ve spoken with some of the players I know in the squad,” Elliot Watt said.

    “They have said how impressed they have been under the new manager, and that gave me real excitement for this move. From my short time in Scotland last year, I enjoyed the league. When this opportunity came up, I didn’t think twice.

    “It’s a great opportunity for me to play regularly and enjoy my football. This is a club that has a great reputation, and I’m looking forward to being a part of that. I’ve now got some hard work ahead of me during pre-season, which I will get stuck straight into.”

    2025/26 SWPL Fixtures

    2025/26 SWPL Fixtures

    The 2025/26 SWPL fixtures have been revealed, as our women’s side kick-off their campaign away to last seasons runners-up Glasgow City.

    The first home game is matchday two with Montrose being the opponents at K-Park.

    September sees the first Lanarkshire Derby, as Accies visit K-Park on Sunday 7th.

    There will be a winter break from 22 December to 11 January.

    Click here to see the full list of fixtures.

    Paul Brownlie’s side secured a top-six place last season and will be looking to repeat the feat in the revamped SWPL 1.

    The division has been reduced to ten teams, with the league splitting into top-six and bottom four after 18 fixtures:

    • The top 6 teams will play a further 10 games by playing each team in the top 6 twice (once at home and once away) resulting in a total of 28 league games for teams featuring in the top 6;
    • The bottom 4 teams will play a further 6 games, by playing each team in the bottom 4 twice (once at home and once away) resulting in a total of 24 league games for teams featuring in the bottom 4;
    • The Champion team, finishing first in SWPL 2, will be automatically promoted and the team finishing bottom (10th) in the SWPL will be automatically relegated;
    • An extended play-off system will be introduced to include positions 2 to 4 in SWPL 2 and position 9 in SWPL 1

    Max Rogers appointed assistant manager

    Max Rogers appointed assistant manager

    Max Rogers has been appointed as the assistant manager of the club.

    Rogers will start his work immediately as Jens Berthel Askou’s number two.

    “I am very happy to join Motherwell as assistant manager,” Max Rogers said.

    “In my discussions with the manager, I was really impressed with his vision for the team along with the winning mentality that he wants to create at the club and in the squad.

    “I believe my skills and experience align well with and complement the current coaching staff.

    “I am eager to get to work with the players to prepare them for the season ahead – and to help create a team that the fans enjoy watching and are proud to support.”

    The 34-year-old’s coaching career started here in Scotland with St Mirren, where he served as a youth coach for over two years.

    He then moved to America, working with Saint Louis in the United Soccer League in his first assistant manager role.

    Rogers returned to the UK in 2021 to work with Shrewsbury as the Under 18s coach before he returned to the USA with Indy Eleven and Miami FC.

    In 2023, he once again returned to England with Wigan, working under Shaun Maloney. Working as a first-team coach for 18 months, he moved up to the position of assistant manager last summer after a successful spell since joining.

    “I’m very excited about Max joining us,” Jens Berthel Askou added.

    “It has been some intense days with many interviews with different candidates. Several very strong candidates have been involved in the process, and the interest in the assistant manager job has been high.

    “In Max, I’m convinced we’ve found the perfect man to help drive and accelerate the development of Motherwell Football Club.

    “Max fits the profile we have been looking for perfectly. He is extremely passionate, detailed and hard-working, and has an innovative approach to his work. At a young age, he has gained a lot of valuable experience through different coaching roles and environments with very talented and modern-thinking people. And on top of that, he has a solid, positive and likeable personality that will inspire and motivate his surroundings.

    “We have gathered positive and strong references on Max, and the interviews and talks have confirmed our initial feeling.”
