    Motherwell 0-3 Hibernian

    Motherwell 0-3 Hibernian

Hibernian came away with three points, defeating Motherwell 3-0 at Fir Park.

Junior Hoilett and Mykola Kukhareevych gave the Edinburgh men a two-goal advantage before Josh Campbell netted a third ten minutes from time.

Stuart Kettlewell restored Tawanda Maswanhise to the starting lineup after the Zimbabwe forward’s delayed return from international duty cost him his place against Ross County. Tom Sparrow’s ankle injury in the defeat at Dingwall forced the only other change, with Davor Zdravkovski coming into the midfield.

The Easter Road men had former Motherwell Academy graduates Chris and Nicky Cadden forming opposite wing backs as boss David Gray aimed to lift his side off the bottom of the league table.

Despite a bright and open start from both sides, there was little action in either box in the first 25 minutes.

A whipped cross from Maswanhise fell behind Kofi Balmer, and although his acrobatic bicycle kick sent the ball over the bar, at least it provided some encouragement for the home fans.

A minute later it was the travelling fans who were applauding as the visitors opened the scoring.

Aston Oxborough failed to cut out Nicky Cadden’s curling free kick, allowing Hoilett, at the back of the six-yard area, to nudge the ball over the goal line.

Ten minutes later, N.Cadden was presented with another free kick, this time 24 yards from goal. His low serving effort forced Oxborough across to palm the ball round his post, but the danger wasn’t over.

The resultant corner to the back post caused mayhem around the six-yard box, and although the ‘Well keeper blocked one effort, the ball bobbled in front of goal until eventually Kukharevych bundled it into the net and gave the Edinburgh men a two-goal lead.

The first half ended with ‘Well unable to mount a sustained pressure on the visitor’s goal with Jordon Smith completely untested.

A vast improvement was required in the second forty-five, particularly in the final third, and it was no surprise when the second half started with Tony Watt and Zach Robinson coming on at the expense of Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Andy Halliday.

And within five minutes, following good work on the left by Ewan Wilson, Robinson’s drive from 20 yards forced Smith into his first save.

But while ‘Well chased the game, a now confident Hibs looked threatening on the counter.

On the hour, Smith finally produced a decent save to push Robinson’s effort over his bar after Dan Casey nodded down Lennon Miller’s corner.

With 20 minutes remaining, the ‘Well boss went for broke, bringing on Moses Ebiye to go four up top with Harry Paton coming on to bolster the midfield.

Ten minutes from time, Campbell prodded the ball low past Oxborough from 12 yards.

Moses Ebiye then came within a ball’s width of reducing the leeway when his left-foot shot smacked off the face of the post, but it would have been little consolation to the Fir Park faithful.

    Tawanda Maswanhise ahead of Hibernian

Tawanda Maswanhise became a hero for his country earlier this month, as his strike for Zimbabwe against Kenya sent his country to AFCON 2025. Now back in Motherwell colours after a difficult journey home, the winger is looking to continue his goal scoring form and good performances.

The former Leicester man is excited for this weekend against Hibernian.

    Stuart Kettlewell previews Hibernian

Manager Stuart Kettlewell was frustrated with how his side’s previous outing against Ross County panned, including the amount of wasted time in the game, and wants his team to show a reaction this weekend against Hibernian. Kettlewell says the Hibs performance and late surge against Aberdeen shows it’s a team still fighting and they will prove to be a difficult opponent.

He also confirmed Tom Sparrow has picked up an ankle injury, as well as discussing inclusion at Fir Park.

    Injury Update

Stephen O’Donnell, Paul McGinn, Callum Slattery, Jack Vale, Ross Callachan and Sam Nicholson remain out for this game.

Jair Tavares is ineligible against his parent club.

    Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell returned from the international break with a 2-1 defeat to Ross County. That result meant Motherwell remained fifth in the table.

Zach Robinson got off the mark in the league, with his first goal in the Premiership. It’s been two wins and two defeats in Motherwell’s last four games. It was a narrow 2-1 win for the Steelmen when these two sides came together last month at Easter Road, with Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Andy Halliday getting on the scoresheet.

Hibernian’s last win at Fir Park came in January 2023 when Kevin Nisbet scored a hat trick to help his side win 3-2.

    Opposition Report

Hibernian have had a tricky start to league proceedings. After 13 games, the Hibees have eight points on the board. Their one win of the league campaign came against St Johnstone in September.

The Leith side are in midweek action against Aberdeen on Tuesday night at Easter Road.

Martin Boyle is on five goals for the season. Former Motherwell academy player Nicky Cadden found the back of the net on Saturday against Dundee, taking his tally for the season to two, despite missing some of the action due to injury.

    Ross County ticket refund information

    Ross County ticket refund information

We can provide the following update with regards to ticketing for last Saturday’s match against Ross County.

When the extenuating circumstances arose on Saturday morning, and with weather conditions only getting worse, we advised all supporters not to travel on the A9 to Inverness.

Having clarified Ross County were not prepared to offer ticket refunds to those who were unable to attend the match despite buying a ticket, the club board engaged with the Well Society board immediately.

Both parties felt the right thing to do was to offer ticket refunds to any supporter who could not attend due to the extreme weather/travel advice.

We have now received the sales and entry data from Ross County and can move the process forward.

If you were one of those who bought a match ticket(s) and couldn’t attend the game, and you wish to be refunded, please email tickets@motherwellfc.co.uk with your name and contact number clearly stated. Please note, only the person who purchased the tickets will be offered a refund.

Our ticketing department will be in contact thereafter.

“We felt this was the right thing to do in this instance,” Chief Executive Brian Caldwell said.

“Lots of our supporters were left out of pocket, through no fault of their own. We’re a fan-owned club, and this is a spectator sport. We want to ensure supporters feel valued, and hopefully this is a small gesture they appreciate.

“Thank you to all who made the journey to Dingwall and to those who attempted it. I hope everyone returned home safely.”

“Putting fans first and at the heart of our football club is a key part of the Well Society’s purpose,” Philip Speedie Chair of The Well Society added.

“It’s great to see the club being so proactive – across the weekend, and today – with updates and this important gesture of goodwill. This news is a further sign of the Club, Society and wider stakeholders working together for our shared future.”
