Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell lost out 3-0 on Saturday against Hearts, meaning there’s three clubs in contention to finish seventh. Only two points separates two points Hearts, Motherwell and Kilmarnock.

The Steelmen will be hoping to register their first win over Kilmarnock in the league this season, with the only win coming in the Premier Sports Cup back in September.

Opposition Report

Kilmarnock will be coming into this game full of confidence having won four of their last five matches. That loss came against Champions Celtic four games ago.

Those results have pulled Kilmarnock away from the relegation play off spots and now have aspirations of finishing seventh. Bruce Anderson is now on 11 goals for the season in all competition, as he continues to be Killie’s leading marksman.

It transpired to be an afternoon of reflection for the women of steel, as visitors Hearts punished Motherwell’s lack of conviction in the final third. 

Former Motherwell starlet Kayla Jardine reintroduced herself to the K-Park faithful, netting against her former side with a precise header guided into the bottom-left corner. Less than a minute later, Hearts had a second in similar circumstances, with an enticing delivery into the box being directed onto the Motherwell crossbar before unfortunately ricocheting off of the back of Emily Mutch before nestling into the Motherwell goal.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made four changes from the side that were defeated by title-chasers Rangers at Broadwood Stadium last weekend. Emily Mutch returned between the sticks, with striker Eilidh Austin, Shannon Leishman, and Sophie Black all returning to the starting Xi. Skipper Gill Inglis also returned to the matchday squad following a recent spell sidelined with injury.

Motherwell started firmly on the front foot, with countless opportunities on goal pinning the visitors deep into their own penalty area. Louisa Boyes’ swirling right-footed effort rattled the far post, with Bailley Collins also denied after going one-on-one with the Hearts stopper.

The midfielder then curled a hopeful strike moments later that fell agonisingly wide of the target.

Motherwell continued to dominate the majority of the first-half, but the visitors soon capitalised on Motherwell’s frustrations in the final third.

Monica Forsyth chipped a perfectly-weighted delivery from the left-flank across the Motherwell penalty area, and former Motherwell midfielder Kayla Jardine calmly dispatched a well-placed header into the bottom-left corner. Less than a minute later, Hearts had a second, with a similar delivery causing the Motherwell backline problems, and Hearts fortunately found the target after a deflection off the back of goalkeeper Emily Mutch.

Two-goals behind at the break after controlling much of the opening 45-minutes, Motherwell were forced to alter formation and try to chase the game. Hearts continued to press, and soon took full control of the contest. Striker Bailey Hutchinson converted a third moments into the second-half, with strike partner Olufolasade Adamolekun making it four before the hour-mark. Six-minutes later, Addison Handley calmly placed her strike into the bottom-right corner from around 12-yards out to make it five. After teeing up Jardine for the opening goal, Forsyth soon added her name to the scoresheet after coasting through the Motherwell backline, and placing her attempt under the on-rushing Emily Mutch.

Motherwell will have to quickly regroup before facing Glasgow City in the final home matchday at K-Park on Wednesday evening.

Fir Park has been recognised as one of two Highly Commended pitches in the 2024/25 Pitch of the Season Award.

After significant investment into installing a brand new hybrid pitch back in the summer of 2022, Motherwell became only the fourth Scottish Premiership club to have a hybrid pitch, following Celtic, Hearts and Rangers’ installations in years previous.

The decision was taken to fix a number of issues that would arise every summer when it came to pitch preparations for the next season.

“This is recognition for all the hard work Alan, Derek and their team put in, on a daily basis, to maintain the playing surface at Fir Park,” Chief Executive Brian Caldwell said.

“It’s great that they have been recognised for their exceptionally hard work. The pitch has been in magnificent condition for the entirety of the season, and that is a credit to their efforts and dedication.

“With the pitches now being monitored by the SPFL’s pitch consultants, Propitch, this has raised the standards of all the grass pitches across the top-flight. There has been significant work and expenditure to achieve and maintain the high standards we have set for our playing surface. It’s great news that this has been recognised.”

“I want to thank Derek Young, James Gray, Steven Drummond and all the staff who help us on matchdays for their continued hard work to maintain the playing surface at Fir Park and at the training facilities,” Head Groundsman Alan Carlin added.

“They work around the clock, all year round, to ensure the players have a professional pitch to play football on at the weekend. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Brian Caldwell and the Executive Board for their continued support, which has allowed me to purchase the correct appliances.

“Although the season is drawing to a close, the work begins to ramp up for us during the off-season. This is the part many people don’t see behind the scenes, and it shows the dedication the staff at the club have to producing a surface they can be proud of. It’s nice for everyone to receive this recognition, as it’s thoroughly deserved.”

Motherwell’s bid to make it three consecutive wins ended with a 3-0 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle. 

After the Steelmen secured their place in the top-flight for a 41st consecutive season last weekend, the focus swiftly turned to sealing a seventh-placed spot in the Premiership table.

Motherwell started brightly, with Callum Slattery drilling the most enticing opportunity of the half narrowly over the Hearts crossbar. 

The hosts soon took the lead shortly after the half-hour mark. Shankland was afforded far too much space in the outskirts of the Motherwell penalty area, and the Scottish talisman drove forward and capitalised with a powerful low shot beyond the reach of Aston Oxborough.

The Steelmen then found themselves level after an excellent interchange of play fell kindly to Callum Slattery at the edge of the box, with the Englishman rifling a brilliant half-volley into the bottom-left corner. The visitors celebrations were short-lived, as a seemingly never-ending VAR check eventually came to the conclusion that Dan Casey blocked the view of Ryan Fulton, despite the goalkeeper having a full unobstructed view as Slattery stuck the ball.

Heading into the second-half one-behind instead of level, Motherwell were forced to chase the game, and Hearts took full advantage. Just as you began to wonder if Michael Wimmer’s side could come from behind for a third successive game, all hope was gone on the hour mark when the home side added a quick-fire double.

An inviting delivery across the face of goal was prodded in by Lawrence Shankland for his second of the game and moments later, Alan Forrest drilled home the rebound following a decent stop from Aston Oxborough.

Motherwell will return to action midweek, when they welcome Kilmarnock in the final matchday at Fir Park of the 2024/25 Premiership season.

Michael Wimmer reacts to the 3-0 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle.

As we enter the final three games, manager Michael Wimmer has praised the connection that has been built between the fans and club.

After nine games in charge, Wimmer boasts a record of four wins and two defeats. In that time, only four sides have collected more points.

Last week against Dundee, the team were greeted by a group of supporters off the bus at Fir Park to celebrate securing Scottish top-flight football for the 41st consecutive season.

“It’s always a good moment if you come back and fans are happy,” Michael Wimmer said at Thursday’s press conference.

“We’re also proud to get out of the coach, and the fans are waiting. It shows that we’re going in the right direction. I’m very happy.

“It’s very important at smaller clubs to have a togetherness. The fans, team and management. If you work hard together and fight and speak but stay together, it’s good. If we finish the season as strong as possible, we will have energy we can bring to pre-season.

“It’s clear what we need. I now understand the expectations from the fans, and now I’m better prepared for next season.”

Paul McGinn will remain at Fir Park until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Having been named club captain at the start of the 2024/25 season, game time has been limited in the last 12 months. The defender sustained a serious injury during pre-season, ruling him out for crucial weeks before the competitive action started.

He returned to the action at the end of July and made nine appearances before suffering another injury setback. McGinn is now fully fit and looking forward to the 2025/26 campaign.

“This season has been disappointing from a personal perspective given the injury setbacks,” McGinn said.

“Missing a large portion of pre-season had a big impact on my season as a whole, but the club and all the staff have looked after me, and I’m feeling great at present.

“The plan now is to repay them for their trust and effort in getting me back fit by getting a good pre-season under my belt. The support we’ve had throughout the season from all the supporters has been incredible, and I want to personally thank them for their continued support.

“The squad are wanting to finish the season as strongly as possible ahead of the new campaign.”

McGinn is closing in on the 100-game mark for the club, which has allowed manager Michael Wimmer to look at the captain’s impact here over recent seasons.

“Paul and I have had lots of chats since I arrived,” Wimmer added.

“He is a great guy and a top professional. I may not have seen him play since I’ve been here, but I’ve watched lots of videos of him in action. There is no doubt in my mind that he will improve the team by being in it.

“Paul is a very important figure in the dressing room and has lots of experience. We will need that going forward.”

Aston Oxborough was pleased to given his first start since January at the weekend against Dundee. Oxborough has been pleased with his contribution pre-injury but is now fully focused going into the remaining games. 

The Motherwell number one has clarity having signed a new deal earlier in the season, which allows him to focus on the football.

Michael Wimmer was pleased to secure Motherwell’s Premiership status last weekend against Dundee, but believes motivation will not be low for the players going into the final three games of the season. 

The Motherwell boss has been pleased with the connection he has built with the supporters so far, and believes it will be hugely important that that remains intact going into next season.

Lennon Miller has been nominated for yet another award, this time for the SFWA Young Player of the Year award. 

Having already won the Motherwell Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Coaches’ Player of the Year, he also picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award at the start of May.

Miller has now been nominated alongside Bobby Wales, David Watson and James Wilson for the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year award.

James McFadden picked up this award in the 2001/02 season, with David Turnbull being next Motherwell starlet to win it in 2019. Max Johnston became the third player to win it 2023, with Lennon Miller now aiming to becoming the fourth Motherwell Academy Graduate to win it this year.
