The story of the match

Hibernian are in good form, winning their last three games and are still unbeaten at home in the league this season, with two wins and two draws.

Steven Hammell’s men will take confidence from a fine display mid-week, showing a clinical edge that was lacking in previous games where the performances were still good.

Lennon Miller has been named in the Scotland squad for the forthcoming UEFA Under-17 qualifying matches later this month.

The 16-year-old, Motherwell’s youngest ever player, will be part of Brian McLaughlin’s 20-strong squad for the trip to Malta.

The young Scots will be looking to emulate the Under-17 side who reached the European Championships in Israel earlier this year, as they begin the qualification campaign ahead of next year’s finals in Hungary.

Scotland begin their campaign against hosts Malta on Wednesday 19, October, before taking on Northern Ireland three days later, on Saturday 22, October. The campaign concludes with a match against Czech Republic on Tuesday, 25 October.

With no win in three and plenty of missed chances, Motherwell travelled to the Highlands to take on Ross County in what Steven Hammell labelled ‘our biggest game of the season so far.’

Callum Slattery and Joe Efford returned to the side as they looked to become clinical in front of goal.

With limited chances in the early stages, Joe Efford found the ball at his feet eight yards from goal.

The American was pulled down and Kevin van Veen slotted home the subsequent penalty. From there, the Steelmen didn’t look back.

Motherwell doubled their lead through Callum Slattery right after the half time interval, with Kevin van Veen adding a third two minutes later.

Joe Efford got his goal after nice control before Van Veen made it a hat trick in the latter stages to send the hearty 200 supporters back down the A9 in a delightful mood.

Danny Hunter has joined Lowland League side Cumbernauld Colts on loan for the rest of the season.

The 18-year-old will join up with the David Proctor’s side, who currently play out of Broadwood.

Hunter was the only remaining outfield player in our development team who is too old to feature in the CAS u18s league, with this loan designed to afford him as much game time as possible.

Along with his fellow loanees, Hunter will also be available for our Development League matches throughout the campaign.

“The club has been working through a model that aimed to get all of our young players not eligible to play in the U18s league out on loan and playing matches,” Stuart Kettlewell said.

“In the very short time I have been at the club, I have been very impressed with Daniel’s performance levels and his attitude. He was the last of the outfield players to get fixed up and we’re pleased he is going to a good club with a view to battling hard for a starting slot.

“Although we have the return of the reserve league, this loan will allow us to have the best of both and ensuring Daniel, and all our other lads out on loan, are getting the time on the pitch they need to best prepare for them for first-team football.”

Motherwell returned to winning ways with a convincing 0-5  win over Ross County in Dingwall.

Goals from Joe Efford, Callum Slattery and a Kevin van Veen hat-trick sealed a big three points for the Steelmen.

Efford and Slattery returned to the starting eleven, replacing Barry Maguire and Dean Cornelius as Steven Hammell’s side looked for their first win in four league games.

County threatened first, with Ross Callachan looping a header just over the bar after ten minutes.

On the 25th minute, Motherwell took the lead. Goss’ cross landed at the feet of Efford and he was hauled down by Callachan.  Van Veen stepped up and cooly  fired into the corner of the net.

There were then claims for a second yellow card for White, as he clattered into Lamie again but upon closer inspection it might have been harsh on the County man. In the end Liam Kelly ended up in the book for his protests.

County looked to respond before half-time but  efforts from Sims and Paton went just wide of the target.

The Steelmen came out the traps in blistering fashion and within six minutes of the restart it was 3-0.

On his return to action, Callum Slattery got his name on the scoresheet and Motherwell’s second with a rasping drive from 25 yards into tbe bottom corner.

Two minutes later Joe Efford burst down the left wing and put it on a plate for Kevin van Veen to grab his second of the night.

From there it was comfortable for the Steelmen.

Efford added a fourth, his first of the season, when he got on the end of Penney’s cross. The American steadied himself and on the turn fired past Laidlaw.

With a minute left on the clock van Veen sealed a fine individual and team performance with a cooly taken chip over the ‘keeper, to secure his hat-trick.

“This was our biggest game of the season so far. I thought the boys responded really well.”

Manager Steven Hammell has taken the positives from the narrow defeat to Celtic last time out in the cinch Premiership but says he is still disappointed about the defeat.

With a quick turnaround to their next game against Ross County, the boss is happy with the performances but knows his side needs to start being clinical in front of goal and making the most of the big moments in the games.

Striker Kevin van Veen remains upbeat ahead of Motherwell’s cinch Premiership match against Ross County.

Despite not picking a win in their last three games, the Dutchman knows the performances are there and if they can find an eye for goal, he reckons the results will quickly follow.

It’s a journey north to the Highlands as the Steelmen take on the Staggies at the Global Energy Stadium

The story of the match

Steven Hammell’s men will be heartened by recent performances but will be looking to make their chances count, following three games without a win.

County started the season with in fine form in the Premier Sports Cup but have found league points hard to come by. They go into this game with one win, and have failed to win at home in the last three attempts.

‘Well fans will have fond memories of the last trip to Dingwall. Kevin van Veen’s penalty sealed a big three points which proved vital in securing fifth place and European football last season.

Stuart Kettlewell is our new lead development coach.

The former Ross County boss, 38, takes up his new post today working specifically with our Development and Under 18s teams.

“I am thrilled to join the club,” Kettlewell said.

“I’ve obviously been out of the game for a period of time and I’m just looking forward to getting back in.

“The role fits in with my ethos of developing young players which is important to me.

“I’ve had a couple of opportunities prior to this but after I spoke with the staff and the manager, I knew it was a good fit and the right move for me.”

Kettlewell was a mainstay at Queen’s Park as a player, playing at Hampden for six years. A brief spell with Clyde followed before five years as a player in Dingwall with County, where he won promotion to the Premiership.

He left in 2014 to spend a short spell with Highland League side Brora, before making his return to the Global Energy Stadium in a coaching capacity shortly after.

As Under 20s manager, his side won the 2016–17 SPFL Development League and progressed several players into the first-team squad.

When Owen Coyle left the Staggies in March 2017, Kettlewell was placed in charged of the first-team squad with Steven Ferguson. In his first full season in charge, County not only won a strong Scottish Championship, but they also picked up the Challenge Cup and he was awarded the Championship Manager of the Season award.

He left the club in December 2020 and had been heavily involved in the media, something he will continue to do whilst leading Motherwell’s young guns.

“We ran a robust recruitment process that was designed to find the very best person and I am glad Stuart is with us,” manager Steven Hammell added.

“He’s one of the country’s most well-respected, talented coaches who will form part of our close-knit staff group.

“We spent a great deal of time internally reviewing all the factors that helped assist the group that included the likes of Cadden, Campbell, Hastie, Turnbull and Scott.

“A big part of that, in our mind, was having a dedicated and focused coach who created a first-team mentality within that squad and that is something we hope Stuart can replicate for what we believe is a very talented group at the moment.”
