HELP SAFEGUARD YOUR CLUB, JOIN THE WELL SOCIETY

As you know, in February Les Hutchison provided your club with an initial loan of £650,000.

In addition, to help the club improve the playing squad plus the scouting and medical set ups, Les has injected another substantial sum into the club. But, he wants his loans repaid.

Les’ loans are repaid by the club at regular intervals. If it runs out of cash to repay the loan temporarily, the ‘Well Society has agreed to cover any shortfall as part of a joint loan repayment agreement.

If both the club and the Well Society are unable to repay Les Hutchison’s loan he will ultimately have to sell the club to recoup his loan. However, no suitable buyer emerged in several years after John Boyle put the club up for sale and the only other option in recent months was a foreign consortium. We run the risk of the club falling into the wrong hands or, in the worst-case scenario, Les would have the option of triggering an insolvency event to recoup his money.

Currently, the society does not have enough reserves to be able to guarantee that it can always provide sufficient cash when the club might need it over the period of the loan. To ensure that it is able to cover any shortfalls the society needs to raise more than twice as much cash as it has thus far. To safeguard the club the society must recruit an additional 1,000 new adult members.

As Chairman of your club and also Chairman of the Well Society, whose mission is to help the club financially through thick and thin, I am appealing to every Motherwell fan to support the club by joining the ‘Well Society. By paying the equivalent of one cup of coffee a week you and I, together, will be able to avoid the worst case scenario.

In a similar way that fans in the Foundation of Hearts are paying Ann Budge for her shares, Motherwell fans can repay Les Hutchison’s loan by paying regular monthly payments by direct debit to the Well Society.

The society membership has raised over £500,000 in two years, which is a tremendous achievement for the Motherwell fans involved. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility therefore that with your help it can raise another £500,000 and more over the next 5 years.

Hearts fans pay on average nearly £20 per month by direct debit to save their club. I am appealing to all Motherwell fans to pay at least £10 or more by direct debit to save Motherwell FC and place it in the hands of those who care for it most.

Motherwell manager Ian Baraclough admitted the outcome was painful but was heartened by his team’s first half display.

The Steelmen were in control during the first-half, taking the lead when Scott McDonald turned in Lee Erwin’s low shot.

But a barmy two minutes, when ‘Well lost a goal from a corner before a defensive mix-up between George Long and Louis Laing gave Adam Rooney a tap in for the winner.

It was painful for everyone in Claret and Amber, but Baraclough was remaining positive.

He said: “It’s a sore one to take because for 45 minutes, that was as good as we have played since I have been here.

“We have shown that we can be a good team and made a very good team in Aberdeen change their system and personnel because they could not get to grips with us.

“All of a sudden, we switched off at a set-piece which has been our Achilles heel and it set us on the back foot and then after a little bit of panic, we find ourselves 2-1 down.”

A crazy two minutes cost Motherwell dearly at Pittodrie as the Dons run out 2-1 winners.

Scott McDonald diverted in a Lee Erwin shot to give the visitors a deserved interval lead but Ash Taylor and Adam Rooney scored in quick succession early in the second half to hand the Dons victory.

It was hard on the Steelmen, who could have gone into the break with a more commanding lead than the one they had earned through McDonald.

With Donvervorn Daniels anchoring the midfield, Ryan Jack was able to push forward and he went close in the seventh minute after collecting a David Goodwillie pass, curling an 18-yard shot just over the crossbar. Moments later, the same player shot straight at George Long from 25 yards.

The hosts struggled to get into a rhythm in the early stages but they did carve out an opening for Kenny McLean in the 21st minute. Shay Logan picked out Goodwillie, who in turn found the former St Mirren starlet – but he could not keep his effort down from 14 yards.

Motherwell gave as good as they got and, after Erwin sliced wide, they should have gone in front in the 29th minute. After a mix-up in the hosts backline, Erwin got in behind the Dons defence but Jamie Langfield came racing out of his goal to spread himself and make a goal-saving block.

However, Aberdeen failed to heed the warning and trailed after 37 minutes. Erwin was allowed to move forward unchallenged and his shot from just outside the box was cleverly flicked by McDonald on route and the ball found the bottom corner.

The Steelmen’s lead would have been short-lived but for an impressive save from Long, who dived to his right to keep out McLean’s downward header.

Aberdeen drew level though six minutes into the second half from a corner. Niall McGinn’s deep delivery found the unmarked Taylor, whose header from eight yards was brilliantly saved by Long – but the ball squirmed from his grasp and into the net.

Rooney then profited on a defensive blunder two minutes to give the Dons the lead.

On loan Sheffield Utd goalkeeper Long charged out of his box to try to clear the danger but got into a mix-up with Louis Laing and Rooney nipped in to tap into an empty net.

From looking assured and well organised in the first period, the visiting defence had quickly become ragged and they nearly conceded again in the 65th minute when McGinn drove a low angled shot just wide from Goodwillie’s lay-off.

In an effort to get back into the game, ‘Well manager Ian Baraclough turned to substitutes John Sutton and Lionel Ainsworth and although the latter screwed a late shot wide, Aberdeen saw out the match to keep alive their title bid.

“There was a change in our demeanour in the second half and that was the biggest thing.

“The players showed exactly in the second half how important the three points were and they deserve so much credit for that.

“It could be the most important three points of the season, you never know.”

“We are now in to a 10-game season and we will look to win as many of them as possible. From the last 15 league games, we have lost one, drawn two and won 12 and that is brilliant consistency.”.

“If we get anywhere near that in the last part of the season, we will be pleased with our work and we are just determined to finish as strongly as possible.”

George Long says it very much suits the Steelmen to be massive underdogs ahead of the Friday night game against Aberdeen.

Few will give ‘Well much of a chance against the high-flying Dons, who haven’t lost at home for over four months.

The Claret and Amber men went down narrowly, 1-0, in the Granite City back in late October, their first defeat at Pittodrie for over six years.

Since then, the Reds have gone from strength to strength whilst ‘Well have toiled.

However, recent improvements have given everyone cause for optimism and the on-loan Sheffield United stopper revealed there is a quiet confidence amongst the players ahead of the BT Sport Live match.

He said: “We go into the game with some belief based on our last two performances.

“We were underdogs against Inverness; no one thought we would take anything against team who were on a long unbeaten run and we got the three points and played well.

“If we can get a similar sort of performance, and even although it will be a very tough match, I think we can go and pull off an upset.”

Ian Baraclough has challenged his players to keep their run of form going when they face high-flying Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

The Steelmen have beaten Inverness and drawn with Kilmarnock in their last two outings, but face an altogether tougher test against the Dons.

Derek McInnes’ side have only lost twice in the league since mid October, both times to leaders Celtic, and go into the match on the back of a week’s training camp in Tenerife.

Although the odds will be very much stacked against his side, former QPR and Scunthorpe defender Baraclough has a plan in place to upset the Reds on their own patch.

“Our preparations for the match remain the same; it will be no different,” he told the broadcast media at Motherwell’s pre-match news conference.

“Although there is no doubting it’s a tough one, we will go with the belief that we can go to Pittodrie and get something and hopefully keep our run going.

“That’s the challenge to the players and everyone at the club: to try and maintain that momentum, even if it is has been just two matches.

“It’s a great game for us against one of the teams in the top two. We’ve got no fear of it, we beat a team who are just behind them a few weeks ago and we’re very much of a mind to go up there and go for it.”

 Extended highlights from the Excelsior Stadium as St Johnstone edge out Motherwell 3-2 in the SPFL Development League.

Jonatan Johansson was left disappointed after his young suffered a rare loss at the hands of St Johnstone this evening.

The Steelmen haven’t tasted defeat since mid December and were twice ahead against the Perth Saints.

However, there wasn’t the same fluidity, aggression or ruthlessness that has been prevalent over their last five games.

Although the first-half was fairly even, Saints controlled much of the second period and when Liam Caddis scored the winning goal, it was hard to deny them they three points.

Johansson was angered by his side’s failure to play as a cohesive unit and challenge them to react when they face St Mirren next Tuesday.

Speaking to MFC TV, he said: “I am very disappointed with how it went, mainly because we didn’t play as a team.

“We were all bits and pieces; one on ones and two on twos. We didn’t play together, we didn’t press and made it easy for St Johnstone to pick us apart. We failed to show the same commitment as in previous matches.

“I want to see a reaction, not just in the game next week, but in training too. I understand it’s a hard time of year for players, but I told them beforehand that I want to put pressure on them. We’ll learn from this and I want have to see an immediate rebound.”
