Motherwell’s reserve side take on Hamilton Academical in the SPFL Reserve League on Monday afternoon.

Motherwell’s reserve side made it back-to-back wins over Greenock Morton in a 2-0 victory on Monday.

Jermaine Hylton and Findlay Cook got the goals for the Steelmen in the SPFL Reserve League, following on from the 4-1 win in the Reserve League Cup last week.

Christy Manzinga featured as he continues his push towards the first team, having been sidelined with a hamstring injury prior to signing.

Casper Sloth also featured at Broadwood, as he steps up his recovery.

Hylton netted in the first half, receiving the pass from Dean Cornelius, fooling his marker with a stepover before firing home.

Substitute Cook then got the second midway through the second half, with his shot from just inside the area being deflected over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Motherwell opened their Reserve League Cup Group A campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over Morton at Cappielow.

Goals from Yussuf Hussain, Ross MacIver and a Christian Ilic double ensured last year’s finalists got off to the perfect start.

Maurice Ross was able to call on the likes of Ilic and Craig Tanner for the cup tie, whist Livingstone, Barry Maguire, David Devine and Dean Cornelius also have top-team experience.

Motherwell made a positive start to the match with a low Ilic shot and a MacIver effort over the bar setting the early tone for the afternoon.

The hosts didn’t heed that warning though as the Steelmen got themselves ahead with their next attack.

An impressive passing combination allowed Tanner to collect deep in Morton territory. He turned well before whipping a ball across goal where Ilic was on hand to head home from close range.

The Steelmen had a golden opportunity to double their advantage ten minutes later, when Ilic was brought down inside the box for a penalty.

Cole Starrs stepped up, but his low effort was expertly turned away by Sam Ramsbottom in the home goal.

‘Well continued to dominate and the second was inevitable. It came via a set-piece just before the half hour mark, Tanner’s dipping corner was prodded home at the back post by Hussain.

Tanner was proving a threat from deep and he almost got his name amongst the scorers himself, his shot deflected on route after good hold up play by Starrs inside the area.

He was in the mix again shortly after, twisting and turning in the box only for his low shot to be turned away by Ramsbottom.

Just before the break, Ilic had a wonderful chance to make it three, when he found himself one-on-one with Ramsbottom. The Morton keeper did well to stand up and got a vital block before it was hooked clear.

The second half started much as the same the first ended, with the Fir Parkers on top. Tanner’s low pass had Starrs haring away from the last ‘Ton defender, but Ramsbottom was again equal to the low shot.

Incredibly, with their first real attack of the afternoon, Morton reduced the arrears by one. A long, hopeful punt over the top had Shaun Rodgers racing clear. He used the bounce of the ball to loop it smartly over Morrison and into the net.

Motherwell recovered from that bow and could and perhaps should’ve reestablished their two goal advantage, but Starrs could only turn a Tanner corner wide of target under no pressure.

Findlay Cook was introduced in place of Starrs for the last ten minutes and his first touch was to send a fizzing shot over the cross bar from the edge of the box.

‘Well wrapped up the game in the dying minutes when Ross MacIver got on the end of a Livingstone cross from the left to bundle home at the second attempt, before Ilic grabbed his second of the game, slamming home after Cornelius’ tempting ball from the left.

Motherwell are in SPFL Reserve Cup action on Tuesday, as we travel to take on Greenock Morton.

Maurice Ross’ side kicked off their league campaign with a battling 3-3 draw at Ross County last week, with Dean Cornelius scoring two and Craig Tanner also netting.

Kick off at Cappielow is at 2pm.

Young midfielder Stuart McKinstry’s move to English Championship side Leeds United has now been completed.

An academy product, the 16-year-old midfielder turned professional back in the autumn of 2018, and had been tracked by a number of English clubs since.

The Scotland Under 17 international made rapid progress over the last 12 months, earning him a place on the first team bench at the tail end of last year, as ‘Well hosted Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership

His development and performances for the academy teams alerted a number of clubs south of the border.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side agreed a compensation package that will see Motherwell receive a guaranteed fee with the opportunity to earn further, should he progress and/or Leeds sell him in the future.

“In an ideal world, we would have like to have kept Stuart for a bit longer and integrated him into the first-team pool,” chief executive Alan Burrows said.

“However, we were also understanding of the opportunity this was for Stuart and importantly, his desire to move there.

“The deal was actually agreed with Leeds back in the spring and Stuart has been down there with his new club since this summer. But it has taken a significant amount of time to complete the paperwork and receive the necessary clearance, which was finally concluded last week.

“Stuart is a local boy who has been brought up to be immersed in Motherwell Football Club. We thank him for all his efforts and endeavour whilst coming through the ranks and wish him every success in his time at Elland Road.”

Jamie Semple has been named in the Scotland Under 19 squad for their September friendlies with Japan in Spain.

The Motherwell midfielder, who has made three first team appearances this campaign, makes the step up from Under 17 level for his country.

Semple joins Allan Campbell and James Scott in being called up to pull on the dark blue, with the pair named in the Under 21 squad on Monday.

Jamie’s brother Kyle is also one of three Motherwell players selected for a Scotland Under 17 training camp in Edinburgh.

He joins goalkeeper Matthew Connolly and Max Johnston in being called up.

Motherwell came from behind to draw 3-3 at Ross County in their opening SPFL Reserve League match on Monday.

A first half double from Simon Power put the hosts in control, with Harry Paton also netting in the first 45 for the Staggies.

Dean Cornelius’ got the young Steelmen’s first goal, briefly halving the deficit when County led 2-0.

Craig Tanner deflected free kick in the second half then brought Maurice Ross’ team back into contention again, before Cornelius’ close-range header with six minutes go to ensured a share of the spoils.

It’s back to action for the reserves on Monday, with a trip to face Ross County in the SPFL Reserve League.

Maurice Ross’ side make the trip to the Highland Football Academy for their first game in the competition of the 2019/20 season.

Motherwell’s Colts side bowed out of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup with a 4-0 loss at Clyde on Tuesday night.

A youthful Steelmen squad held their own in large spells against League One opposition, but struggled to create telling chances and were punished by their opponents.

It took five minutes for the experienced hosts to take the lead.

A long throw was flicked on at the front post and over the heads of the Motherwell defence. David Goodwillie was waiting to put the ball into the net from close range on the right side of the goal.

Clyde continued to test PJ Morrison in the visiting goal, before the youthful Steelmen started to settle into possession. But they failed to open up the home defence to seriously test David Mitchell in goal.

After a balanced start to the second half, a decisive counter attack doubled the hosts’ advantage.

A breakaway following a loose pass in the middle set Goodwillie scampering clear.

His shot came back off the right post and into the path of Ally Love, who steered home into the empty net.

It didn’t take long for the third to come. Ally Love’s corner from the right drifted over everyone and Martin McNiff was there at the back post to head it in.

PJ Morrison had to stand tall on several occasions in one v one situations to keep the score down, as Clyde went hunting to add to their three-goal advantage.

The fourth came with five to play. A free-kick from the left made it to the box unchecked, and McNiff netted his second, with the ball bouncing up past a helpless Morrison.
