    Scott Leitch leaves Motherwell

Motherwell Football Club can announce Academy Director Scott Leitch has left the club by mutual consent.

Leitch, a former club captain and assistant manager, has been in his current post for just over four years, but has left with the aim of returning to first team management.

Motherwell were recently named among the eight clubs chosen by the Scottish FA to head up the ‘Elite’ level of its new Project Brave initiative.

[pullquote]“I am keen to get back into football management and I’m leaving having helped secure Elite status within Project Brave.[/pullquote]

The club will now look to appoint a successor to continue the good work and progress of the last few years.

Chief Operating Officer Alan Burrows said: “I would like to thank Scott for his work at Braidhurst and wish him every success in his future career.”

Scott Leitch added: “I am keen to get back into football management and I’m leaving having helped secure Elite status within Project Brave. I want to wish everyone at Motherwell FC all the very best going forward.

“Under my directorship a high number of players have moved from the Academy to the first team. In addition Motherwell youth players are now representing Scotland in every age group.

“I want to wish everyone at Motherwell FC all the very best going forward.”

Robinson: Glad to have home game

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson is looking forward to a long-awaited home game as his side prepare for the challenge of Dundee on Saturday.

The Fir Park manager spoke to the broadcast press on Thursday morning and says he is encouraged by his side’s performances, despite a run of defeats.

And with a return to Fir Park, the Northern Irishman is feeling optimistic ahead of an all-important Premiership encounter.

He said: “It’s been a while now because we’ve had a run of games away from home, which is obviously difficult, and we haven’t picked up the results we’ve wanted in the last four games.

[pullquote]So we’re looking forward to getting back to business, getting the fans behind us again and getting a home game under our belt.[/pullquote]

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, we just have to pick ourselves up because we know our performances have been decent so if you’re not playing well it’s more of a worry.”

    Robertson to officiate Dee clash

Referee for Saturday’s Ladbrokes Premiership match against Dundee at Fir Park is Don Robertson.

The ref takes charge of his third Motherwell fixture of the season after officiating on three occasions in the 2016/17 campaign, and is in charge of his second ‘Well match this month after a thrilling 3-2 clash with Partick at Firhill.

It will be his tenth ever Motherwell fixture during his stint as a senior official.

The two fixtures he was in the middle for last season included two league defeats in which ‘Well failed to score a goal – a 3-0 loss to Inverness CT and a 2-0 defeat against Celtic at Parkhead.

However, he was also in charge of the 3-0 Betfred Cup win over Stranraer back in July last year. Goals from Chris Cadden, Scott McDonald and Marvin Johnson secured three points in the group stage fixture.

The 2015/16 season brought more success for the Steelmen in league fixtures overseen by Robertson.

A 2-1 win over Aberdeen was preceded by a 2-1 loss against Dundee and a 1-1 draw against Ross County.

Don will be ably assisted by Andrew McWilliam and Daniel McFarlane with Grant Irvine on fourth official duties.

    Development League fixture postponed

Motherwell Under 20’s clash with Dundee United in the Development League on Wednesday has been postponed.

Due to illness and injuries, United lodged a request to have the game pushed back, which has been accepted by the SPFL.

The fixture, which was originally scheduled for December 20 at Forthbank Stadium in Stirling, will now be played in April 2018.

Kilmarnock lie in wait in Youth Cup

Kilmarnock potentially lie in wait for Motherwell in the quarter final of the 2017/18 Scottish FA Youth Cup.

Stephen Craigan’s side are still to play their previous round against Stranraer, with a new date for the postponed tie still to be confirmed.

The winners of that fixture will host Killie in the last eight. Quarter final ties are due to be played on or before Sunday, January 28, 2018.

Motherwell reached the semi finals of last year’s competition, before losing out to eventual winners Celtic.

The young Steelmen, of course, were the reigning champions after clinching the trophy at Hampden in 2015/16.

2017/18 Scottish FA Youth Cup quarter final draw

Inverness Caledonian Thistle or Hibernian v Greenock Morton

Celtic v St Johnstone or Rangers

    Stranraer or Motherwell v Kilmarnock

Robinson: We had lots of chances

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson was determined to look at the positives following his sides defeat against Kilmarnock.

The Fir Park boss was frustrated with the result at Rugby Park but reflected on yet another dominant ‘Well performance.

Speaking to MFC TV at full time, the Northern Irishman singled out some impressive performances during the Ladbrokes Premiership encounter.

[pullquote]We got a lot of chances and some of our football was excellent at times so I’ve got to take real positives out of that because there were some super performances out there.[/pullquote]

He said: “It’s a wee bit different from Wednesday night because I thought we were excellent from the first minute to the last and I’d go as far as saying it was probably our best away performance.

“Obviously everyone’s emotions are dictated by the result and when you make a mistake it’s blown out of proportion but we’ve played very well today and we haven’t come out with anything which is frustrating.”

He added: “We got a lot of chances and some of our football was excellent at times so I’ve got to take real positives out of that because there were some super performances out there.”
