    Motherwell 1-0 Ross County

Motherwell eased into the 5th round of the Scottish Cup but had to rely on Tawanda Maswanhise’s 15th goal of the season to see off a stubborn Ross County.

Securing their eighth consecutive clean sheet at Fir Park in the process, the Steelmen secured safe passage to the next round.

Kicking off their Scottish Cup campaign, Jens Berthel Askou made alterations to the side. Luca Ross was handed his first Motherwell start under Askou, with Matty Connelly also drafted in between the posts. Johnny Koutroumbis was handed a start following his impressive display seven days ago, with Callum Slattery, Liam Gordon and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos restored to the 11, also making it six changes in total.

Despite the Dingwall men propping up the Championship table, they boasted a wealth of experience in their squad as Stuart Kettlewell returned to Fir Park hoping to lead his side to a cup shock. The County boss also had three former Steelmen – Trevor Carson, Dean Cornelius and Jordan White – in his starting line-up with James Scott on the bench.

Motherwell immediately adopted their now familiar game plan, with Connelly patrolling an area about 15 yards outside his area as the home side pinned the visitors into their own half.

The Steelmen had plenty of possession around the County box but failed to get in behind a tight, well-organised defence in front of Carson’s goal.

In the 18th minute Maswanhise finally found himself free, cutting in from the corner of the penalty area. His fierce drive sped past Carson, but Alex Iacovitti brilliantly denied the Zimbabwean, bravely heading the ball off the goal line.

Other than that it was a case of half chances, with Slattery’s drive from 25 yards easily held by Carson. Said and Maswanhise then worked a 1-2 at the edge of the box before the Nigerian striker was rushed into shooting wide from 15 yards.

Although the Dingwall side were happy to defend in numbers, they caused a bit of a scare after 36 minutes when Connelly was at full stretch to push away Ryan Duncan’s low drive.

The half ended with County content to have contained their Premier opponents and ‘Well searching for a little spark to prise open their visitor’s defence.

From the restart, though, it was the Highlanders who looked more adventurous with a couple of forays into the Well box.

The first chance of the half, though, came at the other end. Ross did well on the left before sending the ball across a packed box. When the ball found Maswanhise, his effort on the half volley was partially blocked, allowing Carson to gather.

That was the last involvement for the Well teenager, as, along with Stamatelopoulos, he made way for Elijah Just and Lukas Fadinger.

That injected a much-needed control and pace into the game, and it almost paid off immediately. Fadinger worked the ball in from the left towards Sparrow, some 20 yards from goal, and his well-struck drive was touched over the bar by Carson.

The pressure on the Staggies’ keeper was mounting, and when Maswanhise’s low drive from the edge of the box took a slight deflection, the former Well stopper produced a fabulous one-handed save to keep the scores level.

The parity only lasted a couple of minutes until the 62nd minute, when the Steelmen finally made the breakthrough.

Fadinger’s drive from 20 yards was on target, but Maswanhise’s touch from the middle of the box sent the ball beyond the despairing Carson.

A few minutes later, Askou freshened up the side with another double swap, bringing on Emmanuel Longelo and Jordan McGhee for his first home appearance.

Motherwell still needed a second to kill off a stubborn county, and it should have arrived after 77 minutes. Just burst into the box on the right, but his low drive with his weaker right foot was blocked by Carson.

In the hope of sending the tie into extra time, Kettlewell sent on former Well striker James Scott. And it was his cross into the box five minutes from time that set up Kieran Phillips. His rising shot from 12 yards was destined for the top corner until Connelly sprang to his right to push the ball round the post as the Fir Park men survived a nervy finish.

Motherwell Team: Connelly, Koutroumbis, O’Donnell, Gordon, Ross, Priestman, Slattery, Sparrow, Said, Maswanhise, Stamatelopoulos.

Motherwell Subs: Oxborough, McGinn, McGhee, Thomson, Longelo, Fadinger, McAllister, Just, Osong.

    Emma Thomson returns

    Emma Thomson returns

Highly-rated young shot-stopper Emma Thomson has returned to the club on a loan deal from Heart of Midlothian until the end of the season.

A familiar face to the K-Park faithful, Thomson joined the women of steel on a season-long loan deal at the start of the latest SWPL campaign, but an injury-stricken goalkeeping department with the Edinburgh-side forced Thomson back to the Scottish capital.

A highly-rated youth talent, Thomson came through the ranks at local rivals Hamilton Accies, becoming the club’s number one at only 16-years of age.

Thomson’s talents soon impressed, with the goalkeeper named the youngest recipient of the Scottish Women’s Premier League Player of the Month award since the formation of the SWPL for her Player of the Match performance against Motherwell at New Douglas Park in 2024.

Her ability soon caught the eye of Edinburgh-side Spartans, and Thomson made the switch to the Scottish capital the following season, making nine-appearances for Jack Beasley’s team.

The now 17-year-old departed Spartans last summer, joining Eva Olid’s Hearts side on a permanent full-time contract until 2027.

“I’m really pleased to be back at Motherwell,” Thomson said.

“It’s been really unfortunate with how things worked out at the start of the season, that my initial loan spell ended so early.

“I felt that it would be the perfect environment for me to develop, and that is why I was keen to get back out on-loan this month.

“I can’t wait to see everyone again.”

Thomson has remained a consistent presence for the Scottish National team, receiving caps at both Under-16 and Under-17 levels.

“Emma is another very positive addition,” Head Coach Iain Robinson added.

“After Chloe’s departure, we needed that competition between the two goalkeepers, and despite her age, she is a very settled player at this level.

“We are looking forward to welcoming her back.”

Thomson will be instantly available for selection this weekend, as Motherwell welcome visitors Celtic to K-Park.

    Sophie Townsley arrives in ML1

Adding excitement and firepower to the final third, striker Sophie Townsley has completed a loan deal from Rangers until the end of the season.

An SWPL2 Player of the year nominee, Townsley made her mark on the division last term, with her consistent goalscoring form guiding local rivals Hamilton to SWPL2 title success and promotion to the first-tier.

Despite Hamilton sitting at the foot of the SWPL table, Townsley had been a shining light in the squad, netting 23-goals  in her time in ML3.

“I’m really excited to be here at Motherwell,” Townsley said.

“The club have really exciting ambitions for this season, and I wanted to play my part.

“I can’t wait to get started.”

The 18-year-old’s performances on the domestic footballing scene have continued to catch the eye internationally, with Townsley regularly selected to represent the Scotland under-19 squad, who secured qualification to Round Two of their 2026 Euro Qualification campaign.

“We’re really pleased to add Sophie to the squad,” Robinson noted.

“She is a very exciting young player, who could add that firepower to our frontline.

“We’re looking forward to supporting her development this season. ”

Robinson will be instantly available for selection this weekend, as Motherwell welcome visitors Celtic to K-Park.

Matchday 15 of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign awaits the women of steel this weekend, as they return home to South Lanarkshire, welcoming visitors Celtic at K-Park on Sunday.

Motherwell will be looking to kickstart 2026 on a high after enduring a frustrating 90th-minute winner against Partick Thistle in the final domestic fixture of 2025.

The women of steel will be determined to rejuvenate their recent run of form, after suffering three successive defeats.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

Head Coach Iain Robinson will be keen to secure his points since taking charge of the club last month, whilst simultaneously earning Motherwell’s first-point against Grant Scott’s side since a goalless stalemate in 2023.

After recent departures of Lily Boyce, Sophie Black, Chloe Logan and Dionne Brown, Motherwell will head into Sunday’s contest with fewer available alterations amongst the substitutes.

Victory could close the gap to closest-rivals Montrose, who have sustained a four-point advantage in the final top-six place.

    Celtic

Grant Scott will head to K-park this weekend for the first time as Celtic Head Coach after replacing the departing Elena Sadiku. Celtic sit third in the SWPL table, trailing leaders Glasgow City by seven-points despite securing three straight victories before then defeating Hibernian to confirm their place in the Quarter-Final of the Scottish Cup.

    Scottish Cup team news

Jens Berthel Askou has provided the team news ahead of Motherwell’s Scottish Cup against Ross County on Saturday.

“Elliot will be back at some point in February,” Jens Berthel Askou revealed.

“Exactly when will be assessed along the way. He’s picked up a little thing we’re looking after now. It’s not a major thing.

“It’s the same with Callum Hendry, who we’re managing. He’s been a little overloaded, so he’ll probably be out for a few weeks. We don’t have a direct time frame; it’s hard to say at the moment.

“The good thing is Andy Halliday and Sam Nicholson are out on the pitch with us doing the initial part of the warm-up. The plan is they’ll be integrated more and more as we go. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Sam, and he’s been through a very tough period; it’s great to see him running around with a smile on his face.

“Stephen’s [O’Donnell] back jammed up a little. He had to come off, but he managed to bend forward and sign a new deal with us. The back didn’t stop him, and he’s back in training.”

Stephen O’Donnell set for seventh season in ML1

Stephen O’Donnell set for seventh season in ML1

Stephen O’Donnell has signed a contract extension that will see him take part in his seventh season at Motherwell.

The defender’s contract now runs until the summer of 2027.

“Since Stephen returned home to North Lanarkshire in 2020, he’s played more than 200 games for Motherwell FC,” Jens Berthel Askou stated.

“This season his form has been outstanding, playing a vital role in both the centre-back position and in his more natural role as a full-back.

“Building a new squad in the summer, Stephen’s leadership, experience and bubbly and open personality have been extremely important to us in knitting together a strong group.

“Stephen still demonstrates the same hunger and curiosity to improve and learn every day as when he was young and sets a brilliant example for the next generation of players.

“I’m delighted that he has extended his time with us for another year.”

Making his 200th appearance for the club in November, O’Donnell has enjoyed a successful season in Jens Berthel Askou’s side and has bounced back from a small injury setback in the process.

Playing his 300th Scottish Premiership match also this season, O’Donnell’s experience has been pivotal in the club’s success on the pitch this season.

“There was no doubt that I wanted to extend my deal here, and I’m glad to get my future sorted,” Stephen O’Donnell said.

“I’ve been through so much in my time at Motherwell, and this is a great place to be just now. The club has been making real strides on and off the pitch and is moving in an upward trajectory.

“Playing 200 games was a huge honour, and I will do my utmost best to produce good performances and results on the pitch. The support I have been receiving this season has been appreciated. It drives you on and gives you extra motivation to do well.

“I want to thank everyone for their support. We’re now in a crucial part of the season, so I’ll focus on the matches ahead, and hopefully the team continues to perform at a high standard.”
