Motherwell lost 1-2 to Aberdeen at Fir Park.

Stuart McKinstry cancelled out Bojan Miovski’s opener before Luis Lopes netted the winner with twenty minutes left.

Steven Hammell made one change from the midweek defeat to Celtic, with Ross Tierney coming in for Connor Shields.

VAR made it’s debut and it only took four minutes to be called into action. Bojan Miovski found himself through on goal and cooly lifted the ball over Kelly and into the net. After a quick check he was found to be onside and the goal stood.

The Steelmen started the second half brightly and capitalised on their pressure in the 55th minute.

Connor Shields’ cross from the right was brought down by Stuart McKinstry and his low shot had enough power to beat Roos.

That goal looked to give ‘Well a lift but were hit by a suckerpunch when McKenzie broke and cross to Duk who headed home.

Motherwell had a certain penalty denied in the final minute when Matty Kennedy punched the ball away from Sean Goss but incredibly the referee and subsequent VAR check missed the incident and left Motherwell having to bounce back from another frustrating defeat.

“We weren’t anywhere near our best.

“VAR didn’t even look at the penalty claims at the end which is worrying but it’s another narrow defeat and the fine margins haven’t went our way.”

Assistant Manager Brian Kerr is seeing early signs of progress from the players after their first couple months in charge at Motherwell.

Despite three defeats prior to Motherwell’s cinch Premiership against Aberdeen, Kerr remains confident and fully focused on the task at hand.

Ross Tierney says the group still have confidence and a positive mindset going into Saturday’s cinch Premiership match against Aberdeen.

The Irish Under 21 international said the team have all agreed the performances are there and that it is up to them to start picking up points, which they all know they are more than capable of doing.

Motherwell face Rangers in the quarter finals of the Sky Sports cup at Broadwood Stadium.

Story of the match

Rangers defeated Queen’s Park 5-0 in the previous round of the Sky Sports cup.

The Gers are currently top of the SWPL table with a perfect seven wins out of seven so far this campaign.

Motherwell advanced to the quarter final with a 2-1 win over Dundee United at K-Park.

Kaela McDonald and Gill Inglis got on the scoresheet that day, with the women of steel coming into the match off the back of a 2-2 draw with Spartans in SWPL on Saturday.

We play our third home game in the space of a week, taking on Aberdeen on Saturday 22 October.

The Story of the Match

It’s historically a tight fixture, with the visitors sitting just three points above the Steelmen in the league.

Aberdeen’s last league away win came on August 20th, which was the same day as Motherwell’s last home league win.

Another talking point will be VAR coming into operation for the first time. If the VAR thinks there’s been a clear and obvious error, they will ask the on-field official to go to the monitor. Fans will be notified of whats going on via the scoreboard and tannoy announcements.

With a chance of playing at Hampden in the semi finals up for grabs, Motherwell faced the difficult task of taking on current Premier Sports cup holders and league leaders Celtic at Fir Park.

After frustrating Celtic for the opening 40 minutes, Celtic continued to push for the opener and got just that on the stroke of half time.

With the deadlock broken, the Hoops quickly put the game to bed early in the second half and dumped the steelmen out of the cup for another season.

Motherwell exited the Premier Sports cup with a 0-4 defeat to Celtic at Fir Park.

A Liel Abada double, and goals from Hatate and Kyogo consigned ‘Well to a defeat from the defending champions.

Celtic started as they meant to continue – in top gear. This made life difficult for the Steelmen although they held strong until moments before half-time.

The Motherwell defence was eventually penetrated when Haksabanovic and Taylor combined on the edge of the box and put it on a plate for Abada to open the scoring from close range.

Frustratingly ten minutes after the break it was 0-2.

Juranovic’s powerful shot was parried by Kelly and it landed right at the feet of Abada who cushioned a finish past Kelly.

Minutes later the tie was killed.

Abada’s cross from the right found Hatate and he showed quick feet to knock the ball past Lamie and then Kelly.

Kyogo added a fourth, pouncing on a shot that came back off the post, sending the Steelmen out the cup and back to league business on Saturday.

“We came into this game with a lot of belief but we are disappointed with the way it played out.”

Steven Hammell says his team has ran every team close, including Celtic and Rangers, but insists that is not enough.

The manager wants his team to go that one step further and make it a night to remember at Fir Park.
