Matty Connelly

Matty Connelly returned to Motherwell to cover for the injury of Aston Oxborough. During his stay with Airdrie, Connelly made 11 appearances, keeping three clean sheets.

He signed off with a 1-0 win over Arbroath in his final match before returning to Fir Park. Airdrie parted company with their manager Danny Lennon after a turbulent spell in charge.

Scott Williamson

Scott Williamson has continued to feature for Cowdenbeath. He is now on 11 appearances for the Lowland League side, featuring across the backline.

He has started in four of Cowdenbeath’s last five matches. The match he didn’t feature in was due to suspension after the defender was sent off against Caledonian Braves.

Cowdenbeath remain mid-table and are only eight points off of fifth place.

Ewan Wilson

Ewan Wilson has played a further two matches for Raith Rovers since our last update, taking him to a total of five appearances for the Rovers.

He has three starts to his name this season and was a half-time substitute in his last outing against Morton.

In a tightly congested Championship league table, Rovers are currently sixth. Only six points separate third from seventh in the standings. Barry Robson has left the club, with Paul Hanlon taking on a player-manager role.

Olly Whyte

Olly Whyte has started three of Stenhousemuir’s four matches since our last update and played the final ten minutes in the fourth match.

Winning one and drawing three, Stenhousemuir remain in the promotion playoff spots. Only eight points separate first to seventh in the table.

Whyte is now on 16 appearances this season for Stenhousemuir, starting 13 of those matches. Stenhousemuir were due to play Dumbarton in their final league-phase KDM Evolution Trophy match on Tuesday night, however the match was postponed due to the weather.

Nathan Lawson

Nathan Lawson made a big impact in recent weeks, scoring two goals in his last three matches for Cowdenbeath.

He has played in another three matches since our last report, featuring twice off the bench and earning his third start of the season in his last outing.

Lawson scored his first Cowdenbeath goal against Gala Fairydean at the start of November in a 2-2 draw. He then started against Civil Service, playing 84 minutes and scoring one goal in the 4-1 win.

Elijah Just

Elijah Just returned to the New Zealand squad this month, having missed out on the October action through injury.

New Zealand have two friendlies lined up during this international window, both against South American opposition as they look to step up preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

First up, it’s Colombia on Sunday 16 November in Florida. They then face Ecuador on Tuesday 19 November in New Jersey.

Regan Charles-Cook

Regan Charles-Cook and Grenada have one match during this international window.

They play US Virgin Islands in a friendly match on Saturday 15 November. These sides haven’t met since 2021, when Grenada won 1-0 on the day.

Tawanda Maswanhise

Zimbabwe are playing their final two matches ahead of AFCON in December.

Michael Nees left his role as manager and has been replaced by Mario Marinică ahead of the tournament. Marinică has named Maswanhise in his first squad as the boss, for friendly matches against Qatar and Algeria.

Zimbabwe take on Algeria on Thursday 13 November in Jeddah, before travelling to Doha to face Qatar on Monday 17 November.

Matchday one. The culmination of months of preparation encapsulated in 90-minues.

An opportunity to showcase the connections built within the squad, the tactics drilled on the training pitch, and the ambitions of the team for the season ahead. However, for defender Jenna Penman, matchday one in Springburn presented an unpredictable challenge.

A stalwart of the Motherwell defence, Penman instantly established herself at the core of the Motherwell backline last campaign – featuring in every match.

Penman continued where she left off, with an impressive individual first-half display against Glasgow City. However, whilst making a last-ditch challenge, an awkward landing soon ruled the centre-back out of action.

Working hard behind the scenes, Penman is determined to get back onto the pitch.

“The injury came at the worst possible time,” Penman acknowledged.

“It’s extremely frustrating having worked all summer, heading into the season feeling mentally and physically strong, but having that almost instantly sidelined.

“I was really looking forward to building on the positive season that I had last year. I worked really hard during our time away from the squad in the summer, but injuries are inevitable in sport and unfortunately for me that became a reality just half a game into the season.

“Two-minutes into the second half against Glasgow City, I was caught shielding the ball back to Becky [Cameron], and I jumped over her and just felt myself go flying.

“I landed directly on my shoulder and knew that something wasn’t right straight away. I tore my AC joint, which is the group of ligaments that hold your collar bone down. I tore three with a partial tear in one, resulting in my collar bone moving out of place.

Despite the disappointing start to the 2025/26 SWPL campaign, the 22-year-old is continuing her recovery towards a return to competitive action.

“I received my surgery really quick,” Penman noted.

“I started my recovery only two-weeks after the incident, but was told that it would keep me out for between 3-6 months.

“Recovery has been really positive so far. I was in a sling for the first four weeks, but I have been making progress each day, gaining more movement and less restriction in my day-to-day activities.

“I’ve been spending more time in the gym continuing my rehab and strength work, but I’ll still have awhile to wait before I can start running and prepare for joining in with training.”

The disappointment of Motherwell’s Sky Sports league Cup exit to Hibernian persisted in East Kilbride, with the defending champions overpowering a spirited Motherwell display to seal a third consecutive defeat for the women of steel.

Consistency has been the prevailing factor in Motherwell’s recent struggles, with the women of steel sitting eighth in the Premier League table.

“Our squad is more than capable of competing amongst the best in the Premier League, but we have definitely lacked consistency at times,” Penman added.

“For the most part, we have performed well against the teams around us. We know that the ambition is to get back into the top-six, so we need to be stronger against those teams above us.

“We have shown on occasion that we are capable of competing amongst the full-time sides in the league. The 2-1 defeat to Rangers on another day may have swung in our favour, so it’s definitely frustrating being stuck on the sidelines unable to help the team through.

“The squad have gelled well, and you can see that at times on the pitch. We have some huge games coming up after the international break, and we are confident that we can perform and get the desired results.”

The challenges don’t come any easier for the women of steel, as they travel across the M90 to the North-East coast, as they face Montrose at Links Park. Despite not being able to feature in the matchday squad, Penman is focused and determined on getting back as quickly as possible.

“The thought of getting back onto the pitch is what’s driving me right now,” Penman emphasised.

“My rehab at the moment is very tedious and boring, but every little step I can take to be fit and ready for selection is worth it.

“Watching the girls struggle at points this season has been hard, especially after playing every game last year, but I’m just trying get myself into the best possible position for when I am ready to play again.

“I can’t wait to play again, and I think about it every day.”

Richard Foster has departed the club to explore opportunities elsewhere.

Foster arrived in March 2023 and took up the role of Head of Academy Coaching. During his two-year stay, he became Lead Development Coach, working closely with the Under 18s group.

We wish him well for the future.

Jim Paterson has joined the club, taking up the position of Head of Academy Coaching.

A local boy, Paterson made his Motherwell senior debut in 2004 and went on to play over 100 games for the Steelmen.

Paterson joins the club to work closely with our future prospects.

“It feels like I’m coming home,” Jim Paterson said.

“Fir Park is a special place to me, and I feel proud to have been trusted with this key role at the football club. Motherwell Football Club has a reputation for producing our own talent.

“It’s an exciting time to be working here too. The manager has been implementing a brand new style of football with the first-team, and it’s an opportunity to learn that approach. The young players can develop so much using this style, and I look forward to working with all of them.”

Motherwell are three points off of 22nd place. They would need to win and hope for drastic goal swing in their favour to qualify for the next round. Currently, Hibernian B are three points ahead in the final qualifying spot, and have a ten goal better goal difference. St Mirren B are also three points ahead, and have a nine goal better goal difference.

Looking to show a strong mentality following a heavy defeat in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final last weekend, Motherwell travelled north to take on Aberdeen for the third time this season. 

Having got the better of the Dons in the first two meetings, Jens Berthel Askou was looking for a similar outcome this time round.

Dominating possession, Callum Slattery had the best chance of the first-half, with the midfielder blasting an effort towards goal, but Mitov was able to tip it over.

The second-half continued in the same fashion, but Motherwell failed to make possession count and could only watch as Jesper Karlsson raced forward and smashed into the net to open the scoring.

Thankfully, Slattery and Elijah Just were on the ball to respond quickly from a quirky corner kick routine just minutes later. The draw ensured Motherwell stretched their unbeaten run in the league to three games, making it seven points from a possible nine.

Elijah Just strike cancelled out Jesper Karlsson’s opener as the Steelmen go three unbeaten in the league.

Motherwell left Pittodrie with a point, making it three league games unbeaten.

Jesper Karlsson opened the scoring with a strike from distance, but Elijah Just’s equaliser from a quickly taken corner earned the Steelmen a 1-1 draw.

Two changes were made to the side that was beaten by St Mirren at Hampden last weekend. Callum Slattery and Stephen Welsh returned to the starting 11, with Liam Gordon and Ibrahim Said making way.

This was the third meeting between the two sides already this season, with the Steelmen getting the better of the Dons on the first two occasions.

Motherwell started in a really positive fashion. They had lots of the ball and were in good attacking areas, with plenty of intricate passing, but they were just lacking that cutting edge.

The visitors were first to threaten. A nice ball over the top from Lukas Fadinger found Callum Slattery, who brought it down on his chest and forced a great save from Mitov.

They were handed a second chance to take the lead from a corner on the left. The ball fell to Tawanda Maswanhise, but his shot flashed inches wide of the near post.

Aberdeen had a great chance to break the deadlock moments before half-time, but Marko Lazetic couldn’t find the target as he got on the end of Karlsson’s free-kick.

The sides went into half-time even, although Aberdeen looked fortunate to not be a man down, as Emmanuel Gyamfi persistently fouled despite being on a booking.

For all the possession Motherwell had, on the hour mark, it was Aberdeen who took the lead. Karlsson countered with plenty of space and managed to beat Ward with a strike from a distance.

The Steelmen weren’t behind for long, though. Quick thinking from Callum Slattery led to his corner finding Elijah. Just completely unmarked, and he poked level, dispatching his second in two league games.

Neither side could find a definitive cutting edge, and the game fizzled out to a 1-1 draw, leaving Well sixth in the league and unbeaten in three Premiership matches.
