    Rangers 1 – 2 Motherwell

Motherwell defied the odds and the history books by securing a hard-fought but deserving three points at Ibrox for the first time since 1997.

Theo Bair fired Motherwell into the ascendency within the opening phases of play, adding another strike to his goalscoring pedigree, finding the target inside the opening 10-minutes.

Rangers skipper James Tavernier netted from the penalty spot on the hour mark moments after Motherwell were narrowly denied their second of the evening. Rangers pressed the Motherwell defence, but the backline stood resolute, with centre-back Dan Casey demonstrating his attacking capabilities, powering home a second from Blair Spittal’s floated delivery.

The hosts continued their barrage of opportunities in the final moments of the game, but countless exceptional saves from captain Liam Kelly kept the scoreline intact, with Motherwell shattering a 27-year winless league record at Ibrox.

As the midweek victory over Livingston remained firmly within memory, Motherwell started on the front foot, with Bevis Mugabi almost securing the early breakthrough after latching onto Spittal’s dangerous delivery, but the towering defender’s headed effort fell agonisingly over the crossbar.

The decisive moment came minutes later, as Bair expertly escaped his marker within the centre of the Rangers penalty area, drilling an unstoppable strike into the bottom-left corner.

Motherwell skipper, Kelly was called into action as the first-half progressed, reacting instantly to parry Mohamed Diomande’s effort beyond the reach of the Rangers forward line.

The half-time whistle was met with a chorus of boos from the frustrated home support, with the drum of the jubilant traveling fans echoing throughout the stadium.

Motherwell came agonisingly close to doubling their advantage as the second-half progressed, with Spittal’s left-footed effort from Stephen O’Donnell’s whipped cross rattling the hosts crossbar.

Directly on the counter-attack, Rangers penetrated through the Motherwell defence, with substitute Fabio Silva brought down under O’Donnell’s challenge. The defender looked to have perfectly-timed his interception, but the referee was instructed to the VAR monitors and subsequently reversed his decision.  Tavernier stepped up and coolly dispatched his strike to draw his side level.

Un-wavered by the deafening motivation of the home support, Motherwell stood firm, hitting the hosts on the counter-attack. With less than 15-minutes remaining, Motherwell restored their advantage, as Spittal’s chipped delivery sailed invitingly across the Rangers six-yard-box, with Casey diverting his teammates cross into the bottom-left-corner.

Rangers flooded the Motherwell penalty area in search of a late equaliser, but the Steelmen prevailed to secure their first league victory at Ibrox since 1997 and the first league victory over Rangers since 2002.

The experienced forward travels to ML1 following a brief stint at Hibernian which followed spells at Turkish Super League side Altay S.K Women, London City Lionesses, London Bees and Arsenal.

A product of the Arsenal academy, Nunn played a part in the Gunners back-to-back WSL title victories in 2011 and 2012.

“A massive addition to the squad at this stage of the season,” Head Coach Paul Brownlie said.

“Brooke has vast experience and quality which will help with the increase of depth to the squad and provide more attacking options. After speaking with Brooke, I know she really wants to come here and make an impact, which I believe she can do.

Liam Kelly ahead of trip to Rangers

Captain Liam Kelly says he has been much happier with his most recent performances and is more than happy to take the criticism that comes his way when his standards drop.

The Scotland stopper has his eyes on a spot in the Scotland squad that are heading to the EUROs this summer and believes showing good signs on the pitch and a positive attitude, will help his cause.

A win on the road // Livingston 1-3 Motherwell

Motherwell hadn’t won in the league since their victory over Hearts at Tynecastle back in September prior to their trip to Livingston.

And it didn’t look like that would change after Livingston found the back of the net after just three minutes.

Despite going ahead, Motherwell took control of the game and began to create chance after chance. A half time alteration and the introduction of Jack Vale, seen Motherwell spark into life and Sam Nicholson levelled the game four minutes into the second period, his first goal on his first start.

Blair Spittal got his side ahead with a simply stunning strike into the top corner and Motherwell didn’t look back from then on in. Vale added a third after an excellent cross from Theo Bair was converted and Motherwell secured all three points.

    Match Preview – Spartans (A)

    Match Preview – Spartans (A)

The final pre-split fixture of the 2023/24 SWPL season awaits the women of steel, with a highly-anticipated trip to the capital to face Spartans at Ainslie Park.

Three points separate Paul Brownlie’s side from the Edinburgh outfit, with both sitting precariously above the bottom-three ahead of an important run of post-split fixtures, with each side facing each other both home and away.

The expectations have been set for the squad, ahead of a crucial encounter that could be fundamental in retaining their SWPL status.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

A turbulent run of form for the women of steel persisted in East Kilbride over a fortnight ago, with defending champions Glasgow City cruising to a comfortable three-goal advantage, but the recent run of form fails to accurately reflect the performances of the squad, who have been unable to capitalise in the final third of the pitch.

Defeat in the Lanarkshire derby accurately reflected the women of steel’s frustrations this season, with Hamilton’s two shots on target prevailing over Motherwell’s 20-shots across the game, as the Accies secured their first Lanarkshire Derby victory this season.

Scotland International’s Laura Berry and Kayla Jardine will both return from international duty, as the pair featured in back-to-back victories over Wales, with Berry netting four and Jardine finding the target once.

    Spartans

Spartans have briefly regained a positive run of form following a 12-game winless run, with a strong display over Aberdeen securing the Edinburgh sides place in the next round of the Scottish Cup, with an exceptional six-goal advantage over Dundee United in the league to follow.

Midfielder Hannah Jordan will be one-to-watch for the women of steel, with the 20-year-old netting three times in the last two encounters with Dundee United and Hamilton.

    Livingston 1-3 Motherwell

    Livingston 1-3 Motherwell

Motherwell put on a second half comeback to secure all three points against Livingston.

The hosts took an early lead but goals from Sam Nicholson, Blair Spittal and Jack Vale completed a spirited fight back.

The hosts got off to the best possible start as Tete Yengi netted with the first attack of the game. A pass was threaded through to McKay and although his shot was saved by Kelly, the Australian was on hand to fire in the rebound.

An already tricky destination to come to was made even harder by that poor start as Livi sat in to protect their lead, forcing Motherwell to play in front of them, with very little penetration from the front line.

A set-piece looked most likely to be the source of an equaliser and Bevis Mugabi headed just past from Spittal’s free-kick.

Livi passed up a great chance to double their lead as Joel Nouble’s cross to the back post found the head of goalscorer Yengi but thankfully his header just found the sidenetting.

Lennon Miller then sprayed a fine diagonal ball to O’Donnel whose first time cross found Spittal but his goalbound shot was deflected inches over the bar.

Stuart Kettlewell needed a big response from his men at the break and that is exactly what he got as within four minutes of the restart the game was level. Some good build up play found Stephen O’Donnell wide on the right and his pinpoint cross found the head of Sam Nicholson who powered in his first goal for the club.

Some excellent football was being played with ‘Well finding their feet at a soaking wet Tony Macaroni Arena and the Steelmen carved out a second with twenty minutes to go. More good play down the right as Vale combined with O’Donnell and Nicholson with the winger’s ball into the box being headed only as far as Blair Spittal who showed expert technique to fire the ball into the net.

Motherwell sealed the points three minutes from time. Jack Vale, who impressed as a second half sub, won the ball in midfield played it wide to Theo Bair who hung up a cross to perfection allowing the on-loan Blackburn striker to head past McGovern in the Livi goal.
