    Aberdeen 0-2 Motherwell

    Aberdeen 0-2 Motherwell

Motherwell put their Hampden blues behind them after securing their fourth successive league victory over Aberdeen at a rainswept Balmoral Stadium.

Tiree Burchill broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with a composed finish from distance, with Louisa Boyes also netting in the second half to ensure all three points returned to Lanarkshire.

Manager, Paul Brownlie made two changes from the side that suffered a tough Scottish Cup Semi-Final exit at the hands of Rangers last weekend.

Carla Boyce and Georgie Rafferty both dropped to the bench, with Emma Lawton and Louisa Boyes returning to the starting XI.

The unpredictable weather conditions proved difficult in the opening phases of play, as the visitors struggled to establish a rhythm to their game.

The hosts took full advantage, recording the first notable opportunity of the game.

Millie Urquhart’s drilled effort from the right flashed towards Emily Mutch in goal, but the Motherwell stopper reacted well to parry her effort onto the crossbar.

Mutch was soon called into action again minutes later.

Hannah Stewart’s cross from the right sailed invitingly into the path of Francesca Ogilvie at the edge of the box, but Mutch was on hand to deny the midfielder with another smart stop.

On the stroke of half-time, Motherwell broke the deadlock.

Burchill received the ball 25-yards from goal, and the striker shifted the ball onto her stronger right foot before cooly dispatching the powerful strike beyond the reach of the Dons keeper.

As the hour mark approached, the women of steel doubled their advantage.

Aberdeen cheaply conceded possession within their own penalty area, and Boyes capitalised on the hosts indecision, rifling a composed finish high into the roof of the net.

Despite a flurry of late Aberdeen pressure, the women of steel stood resolute to extend their unbeaten league run to seven games.

Paul Brownlie’s side will now turn their attention to a midweek visit from local rivals Hamilton in the fourth Lanarkshire derby of the season.

For a full paying Adult or Over 65 in the John Hunter and Phil O’Donnell stands, a Junior ticket can be purchased at the reduced price of £15.

Our Well In Scheme will be replaced this year.

Motherwell FC Community Trust will continue to issue free tickets to local schools through its Partner Schools’ initiative.

The Trust works with schools across Lanarkshire to support young people to experience match day at Fir Park.

Tickets are also issued to participants in wider community programmes such as teams, football centres and holiday camps. In addition to this, tickets are issued discretely to people in projects and to our charity partners.

This season, we are offering season ticket holders discounted hospitality packages.

Season Ticket holders can upgrade to hospitality.

In the Centenary Suite, hospitality will be available for £44 per person for category B matches.

    A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

With our 2022/23 campaign almost at an end, I am full of excitement and optimism for next season.

Although I have only been in charge since February, I am well aware of the tricky times and tough moments that have occurred this past year.

When I first came in, I sat down with every player and member of staff. I simply stated, ‘if anyone in here isn’t with me or won’t give me everything they’ve got, put your hand up now.’ Everyone kept their hands down.

I think the full team was on a lull due to previous results and they felt they had let people down. However, since that moment, what the players have given me is nothing short of incredible. They’ve shown resilience and tried to right a few wrongs.

That goes for you too, the supporters, who have demonstrated remarkable levels of support, resilience, colour and noise since I arrived.

A moment that sticks out for me, is Kilmarnock away. It was my first game as permanent manager and, as I’m sure you’ll all remember, Callum Slattery knocked in a free-kick in stoppage time to earn us a valuable point.

Although the goal was a special moment, what stood out to me more was, almost a third of our season ticket holders were in that away stand, backing the team, even when we went a goal down. To have those kind of numbers travelling on the road, is outstanding.

I can only thank every single one of you, who have supported from within the stadium, or from afar, as I know that backing seriously helps the players on a match day.

That’s why your support has been so important, it has been a major factor in us picking up valuable points at home and on the road.

Although results and performances have improved, in my eyes, we haven’t achieved anything yet. The staff here are tirelessly working behind the scenes to build a successful future for this club and we need you with us to help us reach our goals and aspirations.

If we work hard and show ourselves in the correct fashion on the pitch, I know you will get behind us. I speak to the players constantly about being together, but one thing that’s for sure, you are on this journey with us.

I want to offer my profound thanks to everyone and I hope you can continue to back the lads next season as we look to push on to a successful campaign together.

    Stuart Kettlewell

    Manager

    Kevin van Veen POTM April

    Kevin van Veen POTM April

Kevin van Veen is your April player of the month.

The Dutchman notched six goals in four games in the month of April, and won 86.8% of the votes on Twitter.

Scoring two vital goals against Hibernian, with a penalty and free kick in the second half at Easter Road, Van Veen scored another brace seven days later at home to Livingston.

Banging two goals in the first half, he thought he made it a hat trick in the second period however a lengthy VAR check ruled the striker offside.

In the third game of the month, he opened the scoring against Dundee United. Similarly to the week prior, VAR intervened when he finished past the United keeper to make it 2-0. With the check complete, Van Veen was prevented his brace.

At Celtic Park, Van Veen scored a vital goal for the Steelmen to earn them a point against the champions, making them the first side to earn a point at Parkhead this season.

With his total for the season at 24 goals, Van Veen has scored in six consecutive games for Motherwell and closes in on Michael Higdon’s record of 27 goals.

    A working week // Motherwell B 2-1 Dundee United B

With no first-team action this week, manager Stuart Kettlewell insisted that hard work on the training pitch would continue regardless.

With Motherwell in cinch Reserve League action against Dundee United, it was an opportunity for first-team players to get minutes after some came off the bench at Celtic Park at the weekend.

Going a goal down early in the first half, the experienced and the youngsters had to show character to get themselves back in the game.

Shane Blaney scored a world-class free kick, something that is becoming rather common, before Joe Efford nudged his side ahead in the second half.

Lead development coach Alan Archibald was happy with the character his side showed to see out the game, as Motherwell only got a draw seven days ago against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
