The “Score Goals Initiative” is a partnership involving Motherwell Football Club, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire. The Initiative is aimed at S1 and S2 pupils in the age range 12-14 years. The pupils are nominated by their schools to attend at Fir Park Stadium and take part in a ten week programme which concentrates on education, discipline and the promotion of healthy physical activity.

The programme consists of an hour of educational input followed by an hour of professional football coaching at Fir Park. The educational elements of the course cover topics such as anger management and controlled aggression, the harmful effects of alcohol, drugs awareness, social skills and team working, rules and regulations, how to police a football match and the importance of education. All the partners have an input on the course and the professional football coaching is delivered by Motherwell FC’s community coaches Scott Richardson and Brian MacDonald.
Motherwell’s SFA Community Coach and Chief Scout Bobby Jenks works closely with the local Strathclyde Police Community Safety Officer Dougie Denholm in co-ordinating the project at Fir Park.
The aims of the initiative are: to eliminate ‘risk-taking’ behaviour amongst youngsters; to discourage truancy, by linking attendance at the course; promote social inclusion; to provide greater social and learning opportunities for all; to provide support after closure; to increase the awareness of the effects of drugs, alcohol and smoking; to promote a healthy life-style; to install discipline, self-respect, social and behavioural skills, where candidates arrive as individuals but leave as a valued member of ‘team’; to break down barriers which may have existed in the community; to develop positive relations with parents, the police and other partner agencies. The overall aim being to re-direct pupils back on track into main-stream education and assist local schools in saving pupils from further deviation.
Motherwell Football Club is delighted to assist with the practical component of this excellent project. The above partners involved in the delivery of the project recognise the importance football can have and its capacity for developing and contributing to the interpersonal skills of those attending. Football is a team game that requires self-discipline, respect, co-operation and above all teamwork.
Score Goals Co-ordinator Dougie Denholm from Strathclyde Police Community Safety Department said, “Strathclyde Police continue to work closely with Motherwell FC, North Lanarkshire Council Education Department, NHS Lanarkshire and Strathclyde Fire & Rescue on this successful project which is an excellent example of partnership working in the community.
“Each of the pupils that attend the programme enjoy the talks, the football coaching and being in and around Fir Park and being associated with Motherwell Football Club”
